shouldn’t have to do.  If talking about stool samples will make you sick, skip this post.  Thank God they were baby stool samples at least.

Have you ever tried to get a stool sample from a baby whose stool is soaking into his diaper?  I have a request for the makers of stool sample kits.  When you are making those vials and spoons, make a separate one for babies who are in diapers because let me tell you, that spiked spoon attached to the lid does nothing but rip the diaper up.

My doctor told me once when Jordan was a baby that babies are like cars.  Cars will tick until you get them to the mechanic then they won’t duplicate that noise again for the person who needs to fix it.  Babies will do the same thing with the doctor.  Tick tick tick, get to the doctor, nothing.

Christiano didn’t have another diaper that concerned me after we got back from the doctor, so the stool sample vials sat there until this morning when I get a whiff of him.

Pato’s ironing his clothes, which usually when he does that, Christiano goes over trying to pull Pato’s pants off the board, I thought that would work in my favor this morning.  I take the diaper off, clean him up, put a new one on.  Christiano just lays there looking at me.  Usually as soon as the diaper is off he’s rolling over trying to get up.  He doesn’t even wait for the new one.  Now when I need him to move he won’t.  Pato’s whistling at him, calling him to come over.  Nothing.  (Yes, my husband calls to our children like dogs, whistle, here Nano, Nano. It might not really be that bad.  I might be exaggerating a tad.  It’s close though.) I snap the gloves on, turn my whole body away from Christian and start setting things up.  Christian gets up, toddles over to me, squats down, and looks at me funny.  I swear my son was thinking, what the heck are you doing with my diaper mom? Or, maybe he was thinking, you never let me play with my own poo.  How come you get to have all the fun?

I got out the spiky spoon and tried to get some out. Ripped the diaper.  Crap.  I’m holding my breath this whole time.  I got a plastic fork out and started scraping at the diaper.  Christian went and sat at the sliding glass door, looked at me, and started laughing.  I am not kidding you.  My almost 1 year old was laughing at me, like it was funny that I had to dig crap out of his diaper.  Have you ever tried to get stuff out of a diaper when the stool is so loose it soaks into the diaper?  Not cool.

The plastic fork wouldn’t fit into the vials very well, so then I had to use the spiky spoon to scrape it off the fork and into the 3 vials.  Pato was cracking up.

I said, you know what.  Laugh now bud.  Next time we have to get samples of our kids poo, it’s all on you, and it’s usually Jordan we have to get samples of.  You have fun with that dude.

I scraped and scraped, almost passing out from holding my breath.  Didn’t even get close to enough to fill up to the magic lines in the handy dandy flippin’ vials.  Said screw it.  They can take what I have because it’s not going to get much better until he’s back to solid poo. At that point, we won’t need stool samples because the whole reason we are getting them is that he’s had diarrhea since Tuesday.

I’m just thankful that my sister-in-law, who is a nurse at our clinic, threw in gloves for me to use while doing it.  Normally they don’t think of those.  So, a big thank you to Angie.  Man, that would have sucked even more bare handed.

rmtwotd-20

I have to say I think I’ll take Ricky Martin‘s advice.   Singing always makes me feel better and after a morning of playing in poo, I need it.

Have a great day!

Nano’s New Tricks

Posted by Heather Manning On February - 5 - 2010

He is a tricky little baby.  He’s learning what works and doesn’t work.

Last night when I was putting him to bed he got all sneaky.

Me: Nano, lay down.

Him: No no no no no no no no as he heads to get off the bed.

Me: Nano, no no. Mama said to lay down.  Night night.

Him: Lays his head down on the bed looking at me with this sweet expression.  Pops back up and tries to get down.

Me: Nano, lay down.  Night Night.

Him: Lays his head down again.  Thinking that he’s tricking me into thinking he’s actually going to go to sleep.  Pops back up to climb off the bed.

Me: Nano! Get up here and lay down. Night Night.

Him: Crawls up to me rapidly. Climbs up on me.  Gives me a big old kiss.  Backs away quickly, climbs of the bed.  Toddles off to the living room.

Me: *sigh* I guess you’re not tired.

That’s not the first time he’s kissed me thinking it would get him out of trouble.

He smacked Alyce in the face the other day.  Nano! No! That hurts sissy! Toddles up to give me a kiss.  You need to give sissy that kiss and tell her sorry. Don’t hit!

I’m doing the dishes.  He comes out and starts to pull things out of the silverware basket. Nano.  No no! Dirty.  Acky.  Hurt you.

He walks over, grabs my pants and holds his mouth open in the I want a kiss position.

You can still have a kiss, but you’re going back in the living room.

My almost 1 year old is using his powers of manipulation persuasion love already.

We’ll just make the whole post about Nano.  The doctor called back yesterday and said to watch him for another 5 days.  Unless he starts having like 20 nasty diapers a day or the throwing up increases in frequency.

Yeah, he upped the diapers last night.  He had 6 of them after 4 P.M. Hasn’t had one this morning, though he now appears to have Alyce’s runny nose and cough.  And that caused him to throw up this morning, but it was a different type than yesterday.  More I’m too plugged up type of getting sick.

Blech.

I’m tired of sick kids and bodily fluids.

I’m doing the Alex Meraz tweet of the day today (He played Paul in New Moon, in case you aren’t a Twilight addict you were wondering.)

Tell me that picture is not awesome!  That’s it! Madonna inspired the Mad Hatter!  I can’t wait to see Alice In Wonderland.  It looks like it’s going to be sweet! It comes out March 5.  I think I’m going to have to see if someone in my family will watch the kids or catch a late showing of it when Pato is home. It’s showing that it will have:

Sex & Nudity, Violence & Gore, Profanity, Alcohol/Smoking/Drugs, Frightening/Intense Scenes.

Yep, not your mama’s Alice in Wonderland.  I can’t wait.  I’ve got to catch everything Johnny Depp is in.  Who hasn’t loved him since 21 Jump Street?

Yeah, that’s a young Johnny Depp and a young Brad Pitt in the same show.  You’ve come a long way baby.

Gotta give a big shout out to my baby sister Abby!  It’s her 24th birthday! Happy Birthday Abberdabberdodo!  I love you!

Waiting On The Doctor

Posted by Heather Manning On February - 4 - 2010

I called this morning to see if he wants to see Christiano or if he just wants me to watch him.  I’ve learned to call before I come. 90% of the time I get, it’s a virus.  Just watch him.  So now I call and give the symptoms first unless my mommy radar is going nuts, then I go straight in.  He threw up again yesterday morning, once last night, and has had some nasty diapers.  The one this morning was fun to change.  Out the top, up to his neck and out the leg holes, down to his knees.  My house still smells.  Not that you want details about it, but it’s my blog and I’ll gross ya’all out if I want to. :)

He’s still nursing good though not eating food much.  He threw a complete and total toddler tantrum and tried crawling all over her when he saw wanted Alyce’s cheese stick this morning so we got him one out and he’s eaten about half of it so far.  Let’s see if he keeps that down.

Poor child has had so many showers in the last few days he is going to prune up permanently.  But, when you are leaking the stuff he is all over himself, you have to get clean again.

Alyce got up this morning barking like a seal.  (cough)  When I asked Nano if he was a sick baby, Alyce looked at me with this pitiful expression and said, I’m a sick girl.  Yes baby, you are.

It’s not unusual for my kids to be sick at the same time, but it is unusual for them to have completely different things like this.  Usually they pass the same thing back and forth, back and forth, until everyone in the house has had the joy of partaking in the virus and the germs.

So far Kat and Jordan seem to be healthy.  *knock on the proverbial wood*

Pato and I just started talking about the rash on his face too.  He has a few spots that look like little pimples.  I looked up hand, foot, and mouth disease and it doesn’t look like he has those symptoms.  He’s had the little rash for a few days, but they haven’t developed into anything else.

I need to get my dishes done.  Christiano was so cranky I didn’t get them done last night and they are stacked up.  Not cool.  As soon as he lets me put him down again, I’ve got to get on that.  I think I’ll wait until he takes a nap because when I do dishes, he likes to help by taking everything off the bottom shelf.  Such a good helper

A Night Out

Posted by Heather Manning On January - 31 - 2010

I did get to escape yesterday.  I went to the casino with my parents.  They had no intention of going, but I called and sang, I’m going withouuuuuuut you. *insert evil laugh* So they hopped in their car and headed to Prairie Meadows.

I didn’t win. Not unusual. Had fun though.

Came home and Pato decided he wanted to go to the Chinese Buffet.

First he ran to Sprint to get his phone looked out because it’s hot syncing when not attached to the computer.  While he did that I got all the kids showered.  Left the bathroom for a second to grab a towel, Alyce poured a whole glass of water on the bathroom floor and Christiano who was already dressed crawled through it. Child walks everywhere, chooses to crawl through the puddle of water.  Jordan was complaining that he had a headache.  Got him 2 ibuprofin and the moon for his head. (a rice pack we keep in the freezer) By the time Pato got back I was dressed in sweats, ticked off at the world and ready for bed.  That put him in a beautiful mood because he wanted to go eat.

I got over my mood, said I wasn’t changing – so I wasn’t completely over my mood – and we went.

It was fun.  Took my camera to get a Project 365 picture.  Forgot it in the car until the end.

The restaurant didn’t have the best lighting, but here’s the kids having fun –

Jordan snapped a pic of Nano and I.

The girls.

January2010-37

*GASP* They do like each other.  Maybe. Though Jordan can’t resist pulling bunny ears.  I’d have more pictures of Jordan, but in every one of them he ended up blinking, just like this one.  Oh well.  It’s not like I don’t take enough pictures of my kids.

Then we headed off to Wally World so the kids could pick out their journaling notebooks.  Pato didn’t understand why they needed $2.47 notebooks when $1 ones would serve the same purpose.  Because they are special notebooks honey.  Work with me here.  Then they got colored pens to write with.

I loaded up on bird stuff, which made Pato even happier.  Come on, Huck needs stuff too.  Pato didn’t get why he can’t just drink regular water vs having mineral drops added to his water.  Exactly what the point is to spray millet (or millet spray) , and exactly why does he have to have sand paper perch covers?

At least he didn’t argue with the food.  I mean, we have to feed the parakeet don’t we? It’s not like anything that I got for Huck was over $2.50.  It wasn’t going to break Pato.

Then we came home, put the kids to bed, did laundry, and watched Little Ashes that I had received from NetFlix like 4 days ago and haven’t watched yet. Javier Beltrán was awesome as Federico García Lorca and Robert Pattinson was excellent as Salvador Dalí.  It was dark, it made me cry at the end, and Pato said it was incredibly boring until the last few minutes.  We have incredibly different tastes in movies.  He RedBoxed Saw 6 last night if that tells you want he likes.  I hate movies like that.  Back to Little Ashes, definitely NOT a movie you want to watch with your kids.  There is quite a bit of nudity.  Here’s the summery of the movie from IMDB.

In 1922, Madrid is wavering on the edge of change as traditional values are challenged by the dangerous new influences of Jazz, Freud and the avant-garde. Salvador Dali arrives at the university; 18 years old and determined to become a great artist. His bizarre blend of shyness and rampant exhibitionism attracts the attention of two of the university’s social elite – Federico Garcia Lorca and Luis Bunel. Salvador is absorbed into their youthfully decadent group and for a time Salvador, Luis and Federico become a formidable trio, the most ultra-modern group in Madrid. However as time passes, Salvador feels and increasingly strong pull towards the charismatic Federico – who is himself oblivious of the attentions he is getting from his beautiful writer friend, Magdalena. In the face of his friends’ preoccupations – and Federico’s growing renown as a poet – Luis sets off for Paris in search of his own artistic success. Federico and Salvador spend the holiday in the sea-side town of Cadaques. Both the idyllic surroundings and the warmth of the Dali family sweep Federico off his feet. Salvador and Frederico draw closer, sharing their deepest beliefs, inspirations and secrets, convinced that they have found a kind of friendship not dreamed of by others. It is more that a meeting of the minds; it is a fusion of souls.

Salvador’s mustache at the end leaves something to be desired, but that’s his choice of facial decoration, not mine.

If you like darker independent films, then I highly recommend this movie!

And from Ricky Martin

rmtwotd-15

I cannot wait to see the performance.  I don’t usually watch award shows, but to get a glimpse of certain celebs I will. Until I see the ones I want to watch, then I’m off to do something else.

On that note, off to put Nano to bed.  In the middle of the post he threw up all over me. In my hair. I know, TMI. Got us cleaned up.  He sat on my lap for awhile then wanted down to sit with the kids.  Now he’s acting like he’s ready to sleep.

Poor little guy.  That’s 2 times in as many weeks I think that he’s been vomiting. If it keeps up I see a visit to the doctor in our future.

Temple Touch Thermometer

Posted by Heather Manning On January - 21 - 2010

I got this right in the nick of time, well, actually, right at the end of the fever, but perfect timing because I can’t figure out what Pato did with the thermometer after he took Christiano’s temp last night.

31191710964_450x450_a

31191710964_450x450_b

I have been wanting one of these since I heard a commercial for them on our local radio station. It’s one of those things that slips my mind until the kids are sick though. Then I don’t want to take them out to get one. I am so excited to have one now.

As I’ve told you the last few days, Christiano has been sick. It’s a great reminder about how much he loves to have his temperature taken. That would be, not at all. Even trying to sneak it under his arm pit when he’s sleeping wakes him up. You just want to let a sleeping baby lie, but when they are burning up when you touch them, you have to check and see what is going on.

When the premium temple touch thermometer got here today Christiano was napping. What better timing could I have asked for? I snuck in there after reading the instructions. Pushed the power button, waited for the 2 beeps, then pressed it to his temple, waiting for the beep to tell me it was done (6-8 seconds). No waking baby. Woohoo! It’s moving his arm to put the thermometer under it that wakes him up and I don’t even want to know what trying to take it rectally would do to his attitude when he’s trying to sleep.

I had to wait until he woke up to take pictures of him with it because the flash would definitely wake my light sleeper up.

January2010-25

He’s still a baby, I had to bribe him to lay still when he’s awake to take his temperature with a little watered down juice. Otherwise we played the game of “Here, let mommy touch this to your head while you attempt to grab it out of my hand. Can’t grab it? We’ll just smack mommy’s hand over and over again so she can’t get a good reading.” Definitely easier when he’s sleeping. Squirreley child.

January2010-26

3 hours after taking Tylenol his temperature is still normal. That makes my life easier, for the time being.

January2010-27

Can’t try out something new without Alyce getting to test it too. For the record, she’s as normal as she always is. :) And she wanted to keep checking her temperature over and over because she might have a fever. Because you know those come out of nowhere in 30 seconds. Ok, they might actually at times, but she was just having too much fun with it.

January2010-28

Nano asking, “Mom are you done with me yet? Please?”

Here’s a description of mine:

The world’s only combined thermometer for both forehead & underarm measurement in a new innovative design. Another breakthrough in thermometers, its unique design & technical capabilities, which enable parents to receive quick and accurate temperature measurement by just touching the infant’s forehead or open armpit. The temple area is a comfortable and easy measurement site, accessible when child or patient is awake or asleep.

It is currently sold at Walgreens® stores nationwide for $29.99 and online at www.walgreens.com.

Features:

  • Measurement locations – temple and underarm
  • Instant measurement, 6 – 8 seconds
  • Room Temperature display.
  • Large and easy to read back-lighted LCD
  • ODPT® – Over Dose Protective Timer.
  • Recalls last reading recorded
  • Celsius/Fahrenheit scale readouts
  • Simple to operate, no scanning required
  • Family friendly, safe and gentle enough for newborns
  • Meets ASTM Accuracy requirements

Can I get a mommy woo hoo for the fact that the temple touch thermometer takes 2-AAA batteries? That is something I always have in my house. What I don’t have is the little watch batteries that all of my other thermometers called for. I ended up never replacing the batteries and just getting a new thermometer rather than go through the hassle of figuring out how to open up the thermometer, find out what kind of battery it took, and then trying to find a place that sold the right size battery. Seeing as they were the little round ones, that means going up to a counter and waiting for someone to decide if they have that type or not. 2-AAAs makes me very very happy.

The Premium Temple Touch Thermometer that I received gives you the option to take the temp on the forehead OR under the arm. You just push a button, it’ll show a picture of the head or the armpit, then take the temp. Alyce and I tested it both ways, multiple times. M-U-L-T-I-P-L-E times.

Want to know what else is cool? It has a timer to remind you of when you last gave a dose of medicine/need to give a new dose of medicine. If I don’t write everything down I forget what time Tylenol/ibuprofin was given, and that is something you don’t mess around with. You can easily screw up someone’s kidneys and liver with too much Tylenol, especially important when your dosing little kids.

Walgreens sells the Digital Temple Thermometer that I received.

Walmart sells the Mini Temple Touch under the ReliOn brand. I don’t see it listed online, but you can see it here. If you’d like it, ask for it at your local Walmart.

It’s the little things that make me happy and this made me extremely happy.

For being an excellent product that helps me monitor my child when they are sick WITHOUT waking up a sleeping baby -

Thank you to @TempleTouchMom and Temple Touch Thermometer for sending me the Premium Temple Touch Thermometer.

Not again….

Posted by Heather Manning On December - 27 - 2009

Winter in Iowa is perfect for making my kids sick.  Alyce started coughing last night and was crying until I gave her some Delsym and Tylenol.   I know the bottle says 4 and up, but before the FDA changed the stuff on kids’ medicines my DR had me give it to Kat at 2 or 3.  So, I gave Alyce half the 4 year old dosage. (She’s 3.) She finally was able to go to sleep.

Katiana got up this morning and told me her ear hurt and she’s coughing.  Tylenol for her and some ear numbing drops from her last ear infection.  And Nano is now coughing and sneezing.

Joy of all joys I’ve got a house full of sickies.  Jordan is still at his dad’s.  Maybe if he stays there long enough he’ll avoid the germs that would contaminate him too.  I think his dad said 5 days.  He left Friday afternoon, I think that gives him til Tuesday.  I kinda wish he was here to empty the dishwasher for me miss the little poo.

Now I just watch them for a bit and see if they stay the same, get better, or get worse.  If they get worse, off to the DR.  I’d take them in, but you know, I get tired of my DR telling me to watch them for a few days.  So, I do that first.  He’s usually right, but it still is annoying don’t tell him I said that.

I need to get up and clean my kitchen good.  I’ve done surface stuff over the busy holiday weekend, but haven’t done the deep down stuff.  One of those I know I need to do it but I so don’t feel like doing it things.  Blahhh.

I’m really lucky that we have mostly soft flooring (carpet/linoleum) and not something hard like tile flooring right now.  Christiano is really trying to walk, more than the 2 steps that he has taken since 9 1/2 weeks.  But he hits that diaper butt and his knees so hard when he falls.  Not to mention his little knees are getting rough because he crawls out of his pants.  Another reason to clean the kitchen really good today.

And I need to get some duct tape out and tape my vacuum cleaner back together.  I’ve had the thing for 3 years and about 3 weeks ago the switch stopped working.  Pato had a switch in the garage so he jimmy rigged it back together.  (He calls it a Mexican Invention when he does that stuff.  He’s Mexican, he can do that. I’m not so sure I’d get away with it.)  Then he was vacuuming and the handle snapped in half.  I don’t know how he and Jordan have been using it with only half a handle, but the living room needs vacuumed and neither are here, so it looks like I’ll have to figure it out.  I really want to win the Oreck Halo that Feisty, Frugal, and Fabulous is giving away.  Have you see the Oreck Halo?  Freaking sweet!  It’s got this UV-C light that  kills bacteria, viruses, dust mite eggs, flea eggs, lice and mold. Not wanting any of that to live in my carpet, but if they did, a vacuum that killed them would be nice.  Ok, I know we don’t have fleas and lice (my kids have not had lice yet, and no pets that crawl around, mine are in cages) in the carpet, hoping no on the mold, you’d know if you had mold in your carpet, right?  Lord I hope so.  And doesn’t everyone have bacteria, viruses, and dust mites floating around?  Die sucka die!  The question is can I wait until January 15 to see if I win before buying a new vacuum when I probably won’t win? There’s already 1180 entries.   I probably shouldn’t wait, but that won’t stop me from trying to win the Oreck.  It’s too cool not to try.

On that note, I really should go start cleaning while the kids are being good.  I’m trying to motivate myself, not working.  Still need to do it.

Have a great day!

Secretly Happy

Posted by Heather Manning On April - 1 - 2009

Ok, my kids will tell you it wasn’t so secret.

Kat had soccer practice scheduled from 5:15 to 6 and Jordan from 7 – 8 tonight.  I was DREADING it.  It was 38 degrees out.  Not exactly ideal weather to take 3 kids who have colds out in.  Kat’s practice was canceled first, Jordan’s second.  Both kids were bummed.  I was doing the dance of joy, you think I’m joking, I was literally doing the dance of joy.  No soccer tonight, no soccer tonight, we don’t have to freeze our butts, no soccer tonight.  Sung to the Farmer In The Dell.

Yes, 3 kids have colds.  It started with Alyce running from the nose constantly.  Then progressed on to Kat.  Now Christiano is all stuffed up.  I didn’t think babies were supposed to be sick until 6 months.  Immunity from mom built in and all that jazz.  Nope, he’s got a little cough and is sneezing and sounds like a little piggy when he is breathing.  Lovely.  I haven’t gone all panicky mom on him yet (If you know me, I tend to do that – quite proud of myself so far).  I’m pretty sure if I take him to the doctor with a stuffed up nose and an itty bitty cough (it’s not like croup cough) that my DR will say it’s just a cold, keep his head elevated, use saline drops, cold humidifier, etc etc etc.  We’ve been through this – many times considering this is my 4th kid.  As long as he has no fever and isn’t having problems breathing and the cough isn’t scary, I’ll watch him for now.

I’ve had a sore throat building the last couple of days.  I don’t think it’s strep because it doesn’t feel THAT bad.  More annoying during the day, painful when I first get up then anything else.  It’s the headache that gets me.  I think it’s from the epidural.  I’ve had one every day since Christiano was born.  And pain in my back where they put it in at.  You always know there are risks with messing with the spine, I’ve just never had the side effects of the epidural before, and that was my 4th one.  I was more concerned when the anesthesiologist said that it might take out a bit of my tattoo then I was about the side effects this time.  HUH?  They’ve never said it could take out a bit of my tat before.  Not that I was about to go natural mind you.  Off on a tangent again.

Ok, since I got on the Twilight kick yesterday, this funny site was tweeted to me tonight.

Dude, it’s Pocket Edward.  I was rolling.  Some people have the cutest ideas.

Ok, now, I promise, I’ll stop being outwardly obsessed with Twilight and keep it to myself.  It’s not even the movie, though I did enjoy that, I just love the characters in the book, and I want another book to read bad. I think I may check half.com and see if they have any other of Stephenie’s books listed there.  Otherwise, I just need to get to the half price book store and get some books period. I’m out.

Alright, so what else is new?  I got 2 of my kids to bed before 8:00 .  But, one just got up.  Katiana.  She just wandered out and fell back to sleep on the couch.  Which means I’ll be carrying her back in if Pato doesn’t get home at a decent time.  Y’all do know him buying me the soundtrack the other day was his way of bribing me not to be um, witchy, because he was home late, right?  It was like a peace offering as he walked in the door.  He was back to being a poo today.  *sigh*

Speaking of dancing earlier, I have GOT to get Alyce into dance next year.  She cracks me up when we watch Dancing With The Stars – which I think I missed tonight because I was watching Idol.  Last night when Little Kim and Derrick (Sp?) were dancing the Argentine Tango she goes over to Christian’s bouncy chair (it’s the one that sits up couch height, not the little ones on the floor) and holds on with one hand.  Then she sticks one leg out and tries flipping it around like they were doing, mind you, this is my 2 year old.  She’s all trying to flip her head around like the dancers.  I tell you, she was getting into it until she knocked herself down on the floor.  It was all I could do to keep from cracking up.  I knew if she knew I was watching her she’d stop.  Cutest thing ever!

And Idol – Adam Lambert knocks my socks off every time.  I LOVED his version of Play That Funky Music.  When I first heard that was what he was doing I was really skeptical.  I really liked Scott, I don’t care what anyone else thinks, I think he is very talented, not crazy about his hair tonight, maybe if it was shorter?).  I thought Allison’s hair was channeling Tina Turner in a bold red.  Kris was awesome, Danny was great.  I didn’t get to hear what they said about Lil, but I’m wondering if I’m the only one that thought she was off key a lot?  Megan, I could take or leave her (while we are on hair, I liked her little braid). Not a huge Matt fan and I normally like Anoop, not so much tonight,

Alright, I’m going to go get some stuff done before Christiano wakes up and demands my full attention.  Too late.

Have a great night/day!

Remember, ChaCha is hiring still! If you want a great legit work at home opportunity, check this post.
