Mind Of The Beast By Brian and Juliet Freyermuth
When a vampire asks Nick St. James to investigate his friend’s murder, the answer should have been easy, right? NO. Okay, not so easy. How do you say no to a friend like Felix?
Besides, with Thelma by his side, what could go wrong? She’s got that, umm … cute pink backpack of Voodoo magic. Of course it hurts that she manages to look good even when she accidentally conjures and gets possessed by a drunk loa. No, it won’t be at all distracting to have her along.
Since no good deed goes unpunished, a crazy man with starry eyes jumps out of the shadows at the victim’s apartment and pummels them. Their attacker doesn’t just beat them up but also infects them with some bad mojo that’s killing Thelma and making Nick angry … angrier.
If the trail to the suspect—the Green Man—is any indication, they’ll be killed before the poison finishes the job. The old gods are more dangerous than helpful. The Watchers—even the one who seems to have a brain—are always a hazard. And what’s with the all the minions? Who has minions anymore? Not to mention the rapid progression of the infection that quickly upgrades Nick’s condition to ‘blind-rage-filled.’
Why couldn’t Felix have just asked Nick to help him move?
Have you ever been at a loss for words because you know your review will not do a book justice? That’s where I am at. Plus I don’t want to give any spoilers away, this book is complex, but not complicated if that makes sense.
I love the Sundancer series. Demon Dance was my first (and the first in the series) and it was a five star read for me. Mind Of The Beast is the second and I’m going to jump ahead of myself and say I cannot wait for the third!
Felix (the vampire) asks Nick to check the body of his friend at the morgue to see what killed him. Nick took along Thelma because she would know if magic had been used. Her brother is on vacation and will most likely string Nick up if anything happens to Thelma.
Of course nothing can ever be nice and simple when a vampire asks for a favor (because I mean really, if a vampire is asking for help, the task ahead is sure to be difficult).
That leads us into the story.
Mind Of The Beast is so well written with excellent characters I love. Like I said before it’s complex but it isn’t overwhelmingly so. Brian and Juliet right these amazing scenes that are you giving you so much information without you feeling like it’s been forced on you or that it isn’t necessary. It’s action packed with so much paranormal goodness going on that any urban fantasy junkie is sure to read this book from cover to cover without stopping. (I had to stop at 2 in the morning when I was at 85% because I knew eventually my children would be waking me up.) I finished it as soon as I had some spare moments to sit down and read today.
Loved it. I think some of my most favorite parts are between Nick and our handy dandy neighborhood watcher who is brought in to clean up messes, but I think deep down he and as friendly as watcher and not watcher can be. Nick is so sarcastic and the watcher is not amused most of the time, the banter makes me laugh out loud.
I also really enjoy that fact that Brian and Juliet wrote this together. I just think it’s cool when a husband and wife get together and create something like this together.
Mind Of The Beast was an amazing read! Like I said before I cannot wait until the next book. This series is the type that leaves you going through withdrawal as you wait for the next book.
Thank you so much for my copy of Mind Of The Beast.
