Have Giveaways Become Out Of Control Monsters?

Posted by Heather Manning On April - 13 - 2012

I was flipping through Flipboard, like I do all the time when I have a few minutes to spare, and I started thinking about how more and more giveaways are getting more and more ridiculous.

Now, don’t get me wrong, I love a good giveaway, like all of you. I’ve had some good giveaways. I have stopped doing them for the time being because a) I had a few sponsors not follow through on delivering prizes and b) it just started taking up way too much time.

This is what I mean:

20120413-075010.jpg

The ones where a million bloggers get together to offer an iPad, or cash, or whatever it might be and for your mandatory entry you have to like every single one of their Facebook pages AND (or) follow all of their Twitter accounts.

I have decided, I don’t care what the prize is, I am not filling up my Facebook with pages I could care less about or clutter up my timeline on twitter. If I’m following you on Twitter, it’s because I actually like what you post. I hope if you’re following me, that is the reason that you do so.

You know one blogger (out of many) who I think does it right?

Dragon Blogger

I’m pointing him out because I just entered his iPad 3 giveaway. Mandatory entry? Tell him where you are entering from. Full disclosure here. I already got my entries for that post, just showing you a giveaway that I thought was easy and fabulous. Does he have the option to like FB pages and follow twitterers? Yes. Extra entries.

I just am starting to wonder if we really need to make our readers do all of that hoopla to get higher stats for a month or too, and maybe have a couple of them stick around. I want you hear because you like reading my posts, but that’s because my blog is primarily my journal.

I’m also wondering how much hate I’ll get from my fellow bloggers justifying the way they roll out giveaways. I get it, I do. I’m not singling any of your giveaways out. You roll out your giveaways the way you do, others do it the way they do it. It’s all about the stats, about increasing your numbers to attract more PR. Honestly, I understand. I chased the stat monster for a couple of years too.

So to those bloggers, I am sorry if my post offends you, but I truly want to hear from the readers, those who enter the giveaways. Do you like those giveaways that require you to do so much just to enter the giveaway? Or do you prefer the easy entry, answer a simple question or enter your email address or follow the sponsor on Twitter type of giveaways. Or do you not care. There obviously are a lot of people who don’t mind (possibly enjoy?) these type of entries, because they usually are high entry giveaways.

I’m just thinking of the old fashioned sweepstakes. There are lots of people who avoid blog giveaways like the plague because they don’t want to jump through hoops to enter. Simple enter your name and address and you win are the ones they want to see.

I do know that my next giveaway is going to be simple. It’s coming up next month and is sponsored by me for a company where some of the proceeds go to a charity I support. You have my word that the mandatory entry will be simple. There will be extra entries, not a ton, but a few, but for those who like to keep it simple, that first entry will be easy peasy.

Leave me your thoughts. What is your favorite type of giveaway? What makes you jump through all those mandatory entry hoops if you do those kinds? What causes you to skip over a giveaway that interested you enough to visit it to begin with?

Have a great day!

Inside The Spaghetti Bowl – Frank Zaccari Guest Post

Posted by Heather Manning On November - 15 - 2011

Inside the Spaghetti Bowl I have had the pleasure of reading Inside the Spaghetti Bowl and I will share my thoughts with you on this heartwarming book with you tomorrow.  In the meantime, I wanted to share this post that Frank Zaccari wrote for us over here at Not Everyone’s Mama!

Every family goes through difficult times when a loved one becomes ill. Even though your parents have lived a long and meaningful life, it is never easy to see them grow old and sick. “Inside the Spaghetti Bowl” is collaboration with my brothers Anthony and Steve. It is the actual story of our family dealing with the failing health of our mother.

This book is a celebration of life, family, culture and tradition as we document the last eight days of our mother’s life. “Inside the Spaghetti Bowl” shares the tales about the memories, trials and sacrifices made by our parents and grandparents that allowed the family to live the American dream.

The book’s main theme discusses the unconditional love families share through the good and the bad. I hope the readers will see their own family as they catch a glimpse into my family, a family that is always there for each other no matter what the cost.

“Inside the Spaghetti Bowl” discusses specific events that shaped the lives of three generations.  It is not a self-help book, discussing how to cope with aging parents, but simply a story about putting family first.

The inspiration came from the chilling fact that we were probably not the only ones dealing with this unfortunate scenario. As the baby boomer generation ages, so do the parents who raised them.

I was flying across the country to come back to my hometown three times in three months. As I heard the stories regarding the history, traditions, culture, good times and sad times, I knew I was not the only ‘baby boomer’ facing this heartbreaking task. I hope readers see their family in this book, and it makes them smile.”

About Inside the Spaghetti Bowl

The book is based on the last eight days of our mother’s life. It is a celebration of life, family, culture and tradition. As my relatives came to pay their last respects, we heard so many wonderful stories about the trials and sacrifices made by our parents and grandparents so we could live the American dream.

This is a book about family and unconditional love through the good times and bad. It is about a family who is and always will be there for each other no matter what. We hope you see your family in this book and the memories make you smile.

My first thought when I saw the title of this book was, yeah we do.

I love to eat.

Especially chocolate, breads, and pasta.

All of that stuff that loves to gather on your hips and stomach.

The other bad part?  I hate to cook.

Ok, I don’t hate to cook.

I hate to clean up.

So I attempt to not cook much.

But with a fun and easy to follow plan and recipes, this might be the book for me.

How To Draw A Comic Strip

Posted by Heather Manning On March - 8 - 2011

"Oh Brother!" Comic strip illustrator and writer Bob Weber, Jr. offers kids and parents step by step instructions on cartooning

25 OB Sunday (1).jpg

Bob Weber, Jr. draws pictures for a living. He draws the children’s comic, "Slylock Fox and Comics For Kids," and he also writes the jokes for the daily strip, "Oh, Brother!" Role Mommy asked Bob Weber, Jr. to share his advice and best practices with any budding cartoonists out there, and this is what he had to say:

"If you like to draw and aspire to be a professional cartoonist, all you need to get started is a pencil, paper, and the determined desire to draw every single day. The more you practice drawing, the better your cartoons will be. Many aspiring cartoonists spend a lot of time drawing faces. That’s fun, but you’ll need the ability to draw a wide range of things in order to effectively illustrate your jokes or stories in an interesting and convincing manner. Go to the library or bookstore to find cartooning lesson books. These books can be valuable resources for learning to draw faces, hands, motion, backgrounds and perspective. You might also want to consider taking a cartoon class in your area.

Another terrific way to greatly improve your drawing skills is by studying the work of cartoonists that you admire. Allow yourself to be influenced by the styles and techniques of successful cartoonists. In most cases, the cartoonists you admire were themselves influenced by cartoonists that came before them. Don’t worry about your art looking too much like those you admire. Over time, as you continue to practice, your own unique drawing style will develop.

Finally, a cartoonist needs an idea before he or she draws. Being a good artist isn’t enough. You need to be somewhat smart, clever and witty. The more you know about the world around you, the more brain food you have to feed your imagination, and the more interesting your cartoons will be. Read as much as you can. Pay attention to the people and world around you. By observing the everyday activities that take place around you, you will soon find that you have plenty of ideas to draw from.

Now go find a pencil and draw, draw, draw!"

For more great advice on cartooning, visit the "How to Draw" section on the "Oh Brother!" website. And don’t forget to enter your child into the "Oh Brother!" Is Your Kid a Character contest where one lucky child will get the chance to be featured in a nationally syndicated comic strip! All you need to do is fill out the form provided on this post, tell us a brief funny story about your child and he or she will be entered to win. A panel of humor and lifestyle bloggers will select the winners. Results will be revealed the week of March 21.
