We got another package yesterday. Katiana has been waiting impatiently for this one to arrive. I had seen Piggy Paint’s website and we had to give it a try.
I don’t paint my own nails very often unless it’s for a special occasion. One, I have 4 kids, 3 of them 5 and under. My nails get chipped constantly if I have them painted. Two, I can’t stand the smell of nail polish. It gives me a headache. My girls get their nails done even less. It goes along with the smell. Something that smells that bad can’t be that good for you.

One day while we were painting nails over a foam plate, my daughter dropped a glob of her solvent-based polish onto the plate. Shortly after, the paint began to bubble and “ate” through the plate. I looked in dismay at the hole in the plate and decided to test all of her other “kid” polishes on the foam. Within minutes, ALL of the solvent-based polishes began to bubble and eventually left big holes in the plate. From that day on, I decided that any flammable substance that could eat through foam was unacceptable for my children’s fingernails, which would inevitably end up in their mouths.
See, she thinks just like me. Piggy Paint is non-toxic and water based. Awesome!!! We followed the instructions that came along from washing hands with soap and water to letting it dry for 60 seconds, while singing the ABC’s. I didn’t get out the hair dryer because Christiano was getting antsy. Now, even with fast dry nail polish, one of my girls manages to smear their nails before it’s dry. Not this time, both dried without smears or chips quickly!
I painted Kat’s hands and Alyce’s toes and fingers. First thing I noticed? No strong nasty give you a migraine nail polishy smell. Not really a smell to it at all. Kat painted her own feet and my own fingers. (Ever had a 5 year old paint your nails? It’s pretty. 
)

We didn’t try the nail polish remover on our fingers yet because no one wants to take their pretty polish off. That doesn’t mean we didn’t use it. Someone (looking at Katiana) got a little on the carpet (this is why we have a cheap area rug over our carpeting). Came right up with remover. And might I say, that does have a little smell to it, but it’s not bad and it’s NOTHING like regular nail polish remover, which let’s face it, stinks worse than actual nail polish. It also didn’t take any color out of the carpet. Huge plus in my book. It’s my own fault we were painting our nails on the living room floor, but Christiano was throwing a fit because I wouldn’t pick him up at the table. So we moved to the floor where he could crawl on me.
I need to find more products that we can get down and have fun, just doing the girls’ thing, with my daughters. They are just growing up to fast on me. Before I know it, they’ll truly be painting their own nails and asking for mascara. Let’s not get to far ahead of ourselves here.
