Must Have Make Up Products

Posted by Heather Manning On March - 4 - 2011

Here’s a thought I had when I was putting on my make up today.  Let’s say something happened, oh your apartment burned down, your luggage is lost, your make up disappears into the great unknown, what would be your must haves that you replace first?

It wasn’t hard for me to make my list at all.  I have my go to products that I use daily and  few favorites that if I had to choose, those would be what I replace first.  (I was lucky in that my make up box was up off the ground in the one dry room (my bedroom) and I got it out before the broke the hole in my bedroom ceiling, flooding everything in there.  I would have been so upset if I lost my make up box, it was my grandma’s.)

So, here are my go to items –

Maybelline Great Lash Mascara in Very Black

I’ve used other mascaras, I like other mascaras, but I always go back to the old standby.  I love the way it makes my eye lashes look after 2 coats.  I think I’ve used this brand most of the time since 7th grade.  It’s not that change is hard it’s that the mascara is hard to beat for the quality at the price.

Hard Candy Glamoflauge Concealer

I got this at Wal-Mart.  Turns out they are starting to sell Hard Candy.  I know they sold it in Ohio, but this was the first time I’ve seen it here.  LOVE this concealer.  It says it covers up tattoos.  I haven’t tried to cover up tattoos with it because I like my tattoos and don’t work outside of the home so need to cover them up.  It does however cover the mask of pregnancy I earned while pregnant with Christiano that never went away.  And it stays covered all day.  It also keeps my dark eyes (see the apartment burning down post) and blemishes (again, see the previous post – stress does wonders to my face) covered.

E.L.F. mineral booster

So I haven’t tried any other booster to compare this too, but I love this one.  It just gives you a little shimmer to your face.  Not glitter.  Shimmer.  Pretty.

NYC Smooch proof long wearing lip color in #486 (Goddess)

No picture, but this is my ABSOLUTE favorite lip color.  Stays on, and I am not kidding you….All.Day.Long.  It’s a stain that you put a gloss over.  The gloss you reapply throughout the day but the lip color lasts the whole day unless you are eating/drinking a lot.  If that’s the case, I reapply once and I’m good.

LOVE IT!  Used that brand and type for a few years.

Revlon Colorstay Aqua Mineral Makeup in Medium

I just started using this stuff, but for the price, it’s the best mineral make up I’ve used.

It’s a powder, that feels wet.  Weird.  I think it’s the coconut water in it.  My brush is dry every time I apply it and it still feels damp.  Don’t know, all I know if it evens me out after I’ve put on the concealer above. And it stays on, even after I’ve napped with the kids.  I don’t have to reapply anything but eye liner.  I know, sleeping in make up, bad bad.  But it’s just a nap, right?

ELF Eye Brightening eye color – neutrals

I just love the colors and the price. $1?  You should see how many of the ELF eye shadows I have.  All of them I think.  This would be the must replace one because it’s neutral.

Mary Kay Signature Eye Color / Shadow Vintage Gold

My go to most favorite eye shadow that I use all the time.  Bottom, middle, top, it changes the way my make up looks.  Love it!!!

Scandle Candle

I actually have to replace this because mine was destroyed in the fire.  I love this though.  I have the driest face.  No matter what foundation I wear, it makes my face look dry and powdery.  When I use this under my foundation, it makes me look fresh and not powdery all day long.  Favorite!!!

L’Oreal Paris Sublime Bronze Pro Perfect Airbrush Medium Natural Tan

This isn’t make up technically, but I use this every other day when I get out of the shower.  Gives me a nice tan color that I miss in the winter plus no skin cancer chance.  Doesn’t turn me orange.  Makes me happy!

Those are my go – tos.  What are yours?  I might need to add to my stash!

Have a great day!

What Do You Use Vaseline For

Posted by Heather Manning On October - 29 - 2010

Vaseline has been a staple in my house for years.  I’ve used it my whole life.  We always have a huge tub of it in the cupboard.

Vaseline products are manufactured by Unilever [NYSE: UL, UN], one of the world’s largest consumer products companies. With a 140-year heritage as America’s most trusted healthy skin expert and more than 30 years as a leading hand and body lotion, the Vaseline brand delivers products that meet the specific needs of consumers, no matter their life stage or lifestyle. The Vaseline Aloe Fresh line includes Vaseline Aloe Fresh Hydrating Lotion, Vaseline Aloe Fresh Protecting Lotion with SPF, and Vaseline Aloe Fresh Moisturizing Gel. All products in the line are designed to be light and leave skin feeling hydrated and refreshed. In addition to the Vaseline Lotions, the Vaseline family of products also features a complete line of Vaseline Petroleum Jelly and lip balm products. All Vaseline products can be purchased at drug stores nationwide. For more information, visit www.vaseline.com.

What do I use Vaseline for:

  • My feet – I slather it on and put socks over it to soften my calluses.  It feels so much better and my feet don’t catch on my socks.
  • My lips – I use Vaseline a lot during cold weather for chapped lips.
  • Baby’s toosh – I use it for diaper changes to protect him and create a barrier between wet and his toosh.
  • Cuticles – it helps, I promise!
  • Elbows – It helps with dry elbows.  Mine have looked so much better since I started putting Vaseline on them every day.
  • Car Batteries – Yes, I’ve heard this works.  It prevents corrosion on your battery posts
  • Gum in Hair – I’ve actually done this when I was out of peanut butter.  It works just as well.
  • Rings – If your ring is stuck, smear a little Vaseline on your finger and it slides right off.
  • Stuck bolts – I’ve seen Pato do this.  A bolt was stuck and he grabbed the Vaseline and smeared it on.  He got it off with much less effort.
  • Dying Your Hair – smear Vaseline around your hair line to avoid staining your face with hair dye.
  • Wind – put a light layer of Vaseline on your face to prevent chapped cheeks.
  • Leather – I have heard that it softens leather:  shoes, baseball gloves, etc.
  • Scratches – rub a little on a minor scratch on your wood furniture and let it sit for awhile.  It works.

I got a little carried away with my list, it was supposed to be 10.  :)   I could keep going.  There are so many things that you can use Vaseline for.

I wrote this blog post while participating in the TwitterMoms and Vaseline blogging program, making me eligible to get a $25 gift card. For more information on how you can participate, click here.

Hand Medic

Posted by Heather Manning On October - 21 - 2010

HandMedic Along with the leather work gloves we received the other day we received a bottle of hand medic.

    • Keeping skin healthy and well-conditioned is easy with dermatologist-tested GOJO brand skin conditioners.
    • Specifically formulated for professional technicians for use in their work envionments.
    • Quickly absorbs, with no greasy after-feel.
    • Use before work, after handwashing and at night to help maintain the skin’s natural protective barrier.
    • Herlps maintain skin’s natural barrier
    • Latex glove compatible
    • Dermatologist tested
    • Silicone and fragrance-free.

I pulled out the bottle and thought, cool.  I am always looking for something for my hands.  I swear I have the driest hands you can have.  Then I thought a little harder and though, what’s in even worse shape than my hands?  My feet!  Let’s really put this to the test!

My feet are hard and callused and they split on the heels and they hurt.  I’ve been told that it’s because I never wear socks.  Who knows?  All I know is that the only thing that makes them softer at all is A&D ointment overnight with socks on.

I put it on my feet and instantly they felt softer.  It lasted a long time too.  I have a feeling that if I used this on a regular basis that I wouldn’t have the problems with calluses and cracking heels like I do.  If it does that for my nasty feet, imagine what it does for my hands.  It leaves them feeling soft all day.  I know this is listed for professionals, but it’s amazing for moms too.  What are moms doing all day?  Cleaning, having their hands in water washing dishes, cleaning counters, changing diapers, washing their hands from changing diapers.  It’s amazing our hands aren’t in worse shape then they already are.

This is something I have now been keeping on my bathroom sink for after I wash my hands.  I put it on my hands and I put it on my feet after showering and before I go to bed.

Definitely has become a part of our daily routine.

I’d tell you what Pato thought of it, but I won’t let him use it until I buy a bigger bottle.

I’m not always a nice sharing type of wife.

Have a great day!

Scandle

Posted by Heather Manning On September - 30 - 2010

Scandle-1

I received the new Scandle shimmering body lotion candle (first ever of it’s kind!) to try.  I had heard of Scandle many many times and I was really interested in trying it out.

When it got here, I opened it up and immediately was taken to a hot summer day as a teen, laying out, covered in tanning oil, it smelled so good.  Just this tropical coconut wonderfully intoxicating smell.  I kept opening it and smelling it.  My kids kept asking to smell it.

I was nervous when I lit it.  Would it really only be 2 degrees above my body temperature.  Promise?  It’s not going to burn me.  Instinctively, you’re nervous, I mean we’ve always been told not to play with candles, they are hot!  I poured some into my hand (after blowing out the flame) and didn’t get burned.  It was warm, but not too warm.  I immediately started rubbing it in.  It goes on smooth.  It feels luxurious.  And it does give your body this shimmer.  Not an obnoxious, I put on way too much body glitter shimmer, just a shimmer that is really pretty and makes you feel a little sexy.  (Moms, admit it, we still want to feel sexy.)

Now, I don’t know if they recommend this or not, but with how good it felt on my body, I was wondering how it would work on my face.  It’s supposed to deflect light to hide wrinkles and imperfections.  I really wanted to try it.  If you’ve read my blog awhile, you know I have the driest skin.  I can put night cream on my face under my make up and my face still feels dry AND my foundation always looks powdery and just not attractive to me.  I took the plunge.  Rubbed some onto my face.  I let it seep in a tad and then applied my make up as normal.

I’m not sure about the wrinkles, I really honestly don’t have many, but I feel they are so noticeable to me. Since I know where they are, I always see them.  I need to ask Pato if he can tell a difference.  I can say, my make up it was perfect. All night.  I would almost describe it as how celebrities skin looks when they have their make up done.  Almost a dewy radiant look.  After 2 years of trying different foundations, both liquid and mineral, after trying tons of different moisturizers, I have found something that gets rid of that powdery look I get when I put on my foundation.

Do you know how happy that makes me?

Even now, 7 hours after I first used the Scandle shimmering body lotion candle, my face still feels soft and moisturized.  My hands and body do too!

Love this!

Here’s a little video with some more information:

Something else awesome about the Scandle shimmering body lotion candle is that is made with 100% natural ingredients.

Scandle LLC is committed to providing our customers with high-grade, spa quality, skin care products that are made with the industry’s most natural ingredients – no petroleums or mineral oils,100% Vegan, drug-free, & cruelty-free.

I don’t think it gets much better than that!  Wait it does!  After you get your original Scandle in their pretty ceramic canister, they make refills.  No throwing anything away.  Love it when companies have greener options for us!

I highly recommend the Scandle shimmering body lotion candle.  For those who have horribly dry skin like I do, this just might be the answer.

Check out their other products too.  They have quite a few things to choose from and with their dedication to providing natural products that are cruelty free and green, they are a company that I want to do business with.  I really want to try their Pumpkin Pie Spice and Autumn Harvest scents.  They look like they smell delicious!

Neutrogena UltraSheer Liquid Daily Sunblock

Posted by Heather Manning On July - 7 - 2010

UltraSheerLiquidSunblockSPF70 _185x225

Neutrogena UltraSheer Liquid Daily Sunblock

I got to try Neutrogena’s brand new UltraSheer Liquid Daily Sunblock recently.  I’ve actually given it a good test for a couple of weeks.  If you read my blog, you know that I struggle with the mask of pregnancy that has decided to stick around after the baby was with us and a key factor in keeping it from getting worse is a good sunblock.  The sun tends to make it darken even more.  Add that to the skin cancer scare I had and I pile on the sunblock now.

I also tend to be rather vain and want whatever I use to work well with my make up, I don’t want any gummy foundation or powder clumping up.

So, I’ve put this to the test for a couple of weeks and now?  I don’t go without it.  I put on my moisturizer, then Neutrogena UltraSheer Liquid Daily Sunblock, then my foundation, then continue on with the rest of my make up.  It has a nice scent, the smell reminds me of a light suntan lotion scent, but seeing as I LOVE the smell of suntan lotion, I’m good with that.  It is very light.  Goes on very smoothly, rubs right in, no need to keep rubbing and rubbing like you do with your regular sunblock.  My foundation goes over it wonderfully.  No gumming up or any noticeable change in the consistency of my sunblock.  The big test?  Soccer games in the mid-morning, when the sun is strongest.  No burning at all.

One time I forgot, in my rush out the door, to put sunblock on the little ones for Jordan’s soccer game.  We were sitting there, the sun beating down on us, and I was freaking out, worrying about their sensitive skin.  Then I remembered that I had the bottle of Neutrogena UltraSheer Liquid Daily Sunblock in my purse.  I put it on them.  No burning of their precious little bodies either.  A little went a long way too.

I wouldn’t suggest using this on 3 of your kids as a daily thing, unless you buy it in bulk, but for an emergency, it did the trick!

(Neutrogena has plenty of products for your babies and kids to use out in the sun.  I know, it’s what we use on our kids already.)

I haven’t tried reapplying it after I already have my make up on because I’m worried it would smear my foundation/powder/bronzer that I already have on.  I have a spray sunblock that I use for those instances, but for my first thing in the morning, before I put on my make up, or for any time I don’t have a full face on, this is what I reach for.

Would you like to review UltraSheer®, too? Then go to http://www.giantwavepool.com/ultrasheer!

Thank you so much to Neutrogena for supplying me with their new Neutrogena UltraSheer Liquid Daily Sunblock.  It is now a staple in my make up box and purse!

**CLOSED** Bronzed Envy’s Can Tan

Posted by Heather Manning On June - 23 - 2010

Congrats to Jaclyn Looper!  Thanks to everyone who entered!

I’ve told you all before how I used to be a tanning addict.  Seriously.  For years I tanned every single day.  If I missed a day of tanning I felt like I was getting pale again.  It was to the point that people who loved me were telling me that I was too dark.  Here I am at the height of my tanning career.

michelle and me

If you can’t tell, I’m the one on the left.  I even worked in a tanning salon so that I could tan all the time, whenever I wanted.

I stopped tanning when I was pregnant with Katiana at Pato’s request.  He really hated it, only because I was completely addicted and was seriously abusing my skin.

Last year, I had a skin cancer scare.  I had to have a funny looking spot on my shoulder biopsied.  Thankfully it came back negative, but that erased all thoughts of tanning again out of my mind.  (I’d been thinking about it again.  I could feel the call of the tanning booth, the smell of tanning lotion, it was on my mind all the time.  If you don’t think that tanning can be addicting, ask someone you know who tans – a lot.  It totally is.  The feeling you get when you’re tanning, the way you look afterwards.  It’s hard to let that go.)

I’ve been on a quest to find the perfect sunless tanning product.  I had pretty much given up after using product after product and coming away streaky and orange-ish with each one.

cantan2

Then I found Bronzed Envy’s Can Tan.  May I just start out this by saying, I am now Blakeley’s biggest fan?  She owns Bronzed Envy.

Bronzed Envy is air brush tanning.  You get much better results than using a spray booth.  No streaks!  She has mobile tanning where they come to you, tanning for special events, and Bronzed Hottie Memberships.  She also has the opportunity for you to own your own air brush tanning business, oh the temptation!

Now she has Can Tan!

It’s the next best thing to an airbrush tan! It will give you an instant tan/color right away AND also develops into a darker tan over the next few hours! This stuff Rocks and is a best seller!! Your very own jump start on Healthy looking beautiful skin!!! Smart Tan In A Can is great for touch-ups after you are airburshed or the next best thing to an actual Bronzed Envy airbrush tan.

I was so hopeful when I tried this, but I had little seeds of doubt in my mind.  I mean, I’ve used every sunless tanning product under the sun.  What were the chances that this would be different?

First, I watched Blakeley’s video on how to use Can Tan.

Click on the video to see it full size at YouTube.  I still haven’t figured out why full size ones make my front page funny.

I wanted to make sure I did it right.  Then I used it.

Does it work?  See for yourself!

cantan

I had to take a self picture, so you get the legs. :)   That’s after one application.  I got a little carried away and did 3 over 2 days.  I told you, I like to be dark.

No streaks, even color, and I wasn’t orange!

My next question was, what would I look like after I took a shower?  After the bronzer had been washed away?  Just as dark!

My opinion?  This is my absolute favorite, top of the list, totally the best sunless tanning product I have ever tried.  I don’t know what Bronzed Envy has in Can Tan that is different, but whatever it is, it does the trick!

My sister in law and I ran into each other at Michael’s while shopping for Father’s Day presents.  I had told her about Can Tan a few days before.  The first thing she said to me when she saw me?  OMG that stuff really works.  (She’s a tan-aholic like me.)

I told you it did.

I’ve found that if I reapply every 3 days, I keep the color that I had originally built it to.

I am in love!

I’ve had a blast looking through the Bronzed Envy store trying to decide what products I need to help extend the life of my sunless tan.  They even have a Bronzed Envy Home Sunless Tanning Kit.  I want.

I am totally a new Bronzed Envy customer.  I think I can get by with 2 bottles a month.  That’s about what I used to pay for unlimited tanning for month and it’s so much healthier for my skin.

I’m seriously thinking about the Bronzed Envy business opportunity too.  After using the product, believing in the product, I’m thinking it might be a way to supplement Pato’s income AND get out of the house, having a fun time helping other women get that healthy glow.  Just need to get Pato on board with that.

Guess what?  Blakeley has offered a can of Bronzed Envy’s Can Tan for one of my readers so that you can experience the fabulous bronzeness that comes from Can Tan yourself!

Scientific White Bamboo Exfoliator

Posted by Heather Manning On May - 26 - 2010

white_bamboo_exfoliator I recently was able to try the Scientific White Bamboo Exfoliator by Kenneth Beer MD.

Before I give you my thoughts on the product, let me tell you what Scientific says about it.

White Bamboo Exfoliator is a clay-based scrub for all skin types and warms upon contact with water. This deep-cleansing formula helps purify skin, minimize pores and balance excess oils. Microsifted White Bamboo crystals gently resurface the outer layers of skin. Our four powerful antioxidants (Acai Fruit Extract, Green and White Tea as well as Ferulic Acid) aid in correcting daily environmental damage. With regular use, White Bamboo Exfoliator can help provide a more luminous, smoother, healthier younger-looking complexion.

There is a lot more information on the product page that I think is essential to knowing about this product and how it works so check it out when you have time!

When I got the Scientific White Bamboo Exfoliator, I excitedly ran to the bathroom to try it after ripping open the package it came in.  I put the quarter sized amount in my palm and went to work spreading it on my face and neck.  The first thing I noticed is how it heats up.  Immediately.  I wouldn’t call it painful, but it is definitely warm.  Be very careful not to get this near your eyes because it is very abrasive.  I massaged it for the two minutes and then left it on for 3 more.  You can definitely feel the bamboo as your massaging this into your face.  I start out rubbing more vigorously then back off and lightly rub it towards the end because it can get sore if you rub too hard.

The results?  Immediately my skin felt baby smooth.  I mean, couldn’t stop touching my face baby smooth.  It looked brighter.  I was happy with just that result.

After 3 more uses I was amazed one day when I was putting on my make up.  Amazed.  I have scars on my face.  Not from acne per say, because what I have doesn’t look like acne to me. I have bumps all over my cheeks that are the same color as my skin.  When I was in my 20s, I tried to pop them like you would a zit.  All it did was scar up my cheeks horribly.  And I still have bumps.

Why was I amazed?  The scarring was disappearing.  I’m at probably 1/2 the scarring I had before.  They were just dark spots and small indentations, but they bothered me.  A lot.  The bumps are starting to leave too.  I don’t have any in the center of my cheeks now and the ones around the center are dramatically lower in quantity.  Do you know how happy that makes me?  I’m starting to feel good about my face again.

I also noticed that the faint age lines that I am getting are not quite as noticeable when I’m not smiling.  When I smile they are still there, but they are getting better as well.

intensive_repair_serum Verdict, I love this!  I use it every other day in the shower right now and I’m loving the results that I see. For our income, it’s a little high in price, but for what it’s doing for me, it’s worth it.  Speaking of price, they have a coupon right now, their monthly special.  If you add the Scientific White Bamboo Exfoliator to your cart, then click on the sidebar where it says monthly special 20% off of the Scientific White Bamboo Exfoliator, you’ll see a $13.60 discount in your cart.  I really want to try his Intensive Repair Serum now.

<—

I had thought to myself that this would be excellent for your rough feet too (my heels are horrible, dry, cracked, gross).  I noticed on the Scientific White Bamboo Exfoliator product page that they do recommend that.  I am going to have to give it a try!

disclaimer

Thank you to Scientific and Kenneth Beer MD for sending me the Scientific White Bamboo Exfoliator to try out.  Fabulous!  I’ve never used another product like it with results like I have gotten.

Peepshow Perfumes

Posted by Heather Manning On May - 26 - 2010

You know by my review how much I love Opulant Alchemy. (Speaking of which, that giveaway ends today!)

il_430xN.136635785

She has another Etsy store!  Peepshow Perfumes

Guess what that one is?  Your own custom blended perfume!

… So, how do you want to feel? Sexy, Succulent, Sweet, with a hint of mystery & a dash of delicate femininity? Create your own custom blended perfume from my extensive collection of high quality of fragrance oils. Pick your tangy fruits, delicate heart notes & deep base notes. A chance to create a one of a kind fragrance that is ALL YOU!
How it works…
Choose your fragrance notes from the list below. Let me know, in the notes at checkout, the proportion you would like your fragrance notes. (EX: 1 part Peach, 2 parts Vanilla, 2 parts Gardenia). Choose up to 6 fragrances to add to your perfume, but it may be as simple as 2 fragrances… or leave it to me & just let me know the notes you would like.
All finished perfumes are "perfume" strength (strong!) & will be in a base of pure grapeseed oil. Safely packaged in a 1/8 oz glass roll on bottle with a black cap. I will choose a sassy “Pin Up Girl” label for your bottle! … We all have a little saucy pin up girl in all of us, just dying to get out!

Again, like all of her prices, they are way too reasonable!  ($11 for your own custom made perfume?  That is crazy!)  I hopped right on over and blended up my own perfume, well, actually, she blended it. I just picked the parts.

I ordered –

2 parts Sweet Pea
1 pt lily of the valley
1 pt violet
1 pt cherry blossom

Sweet pea is my absolute most favorite scent in the world, so it had to be the main smell.

It got here today and I could just about eat myself up after putting it on.  It smells so good!  It’s fresh, and floral, and just smells clean.  I am so happy with it.  I know that just like her other perfumes, this one will last all day too.  I’ve rarely have to reapply.  I’ve gotten quite a few compliments on her perfumes.  The most recent one was when I was standing right next to my almost 12 year old niece, she said something smells so good!  I said is it this?  as I gave her my wrist.  Yep!  I want some!  I was wearing Flowerbomb at the time.  I can’t wait for Taylor to smell this one!

Can’t forget the packaging!  My Peepshow Perfumes label is so cute.  Got myself a little redhead pin up girl.

I am totally going to make another one for myself.  I’m thinking something with red apple, maybe vanilla, and I’m wondering how cherry blossom would smell with that?

I’m also thinking about my neice’s birthday in July.  If her mom can tell me what Taylor’s favorite scents are.  How many other 12 year olds do you know with their own custom made perfume?

So, ladies after you enter the giveaway to win one of her fabulous perfumes from her Etsy shop, Opulent Alchemy (that one is on me, I love her perfumes so much, I am giving one away out of my own pocket), head on over to Peepshow Perfumes and blend up your favorite scents!

To the FTC man, this review is all me!  I received nothing for it.  I purchased my Peepshow Perfumes perfume all on my own and as always, have to share her wonderful products cuz they smell so good!
