Bobby Singer’s Guide To Hunting

I am totally stoked! I played WbWord‘s trivia the other day. How excited was I to know that I was the first winning response and won Bobby Singer’s Guide to Hunting.

My question was, why was Sam locked in Bobby’s panic room in season 4?

To help him get that demon blood out of his body of course!

Helps that I had just rewatched all 126 episodes (6 seasons) that Netflix has in their instant watch section.

Love love me some supernatural!

Anyone else completely excited for tonight’s new episode?

As a WBWord Team Member, I have won this product from Warner Bros. WBWord division to promote.

Entrapped By Barbara Kyle

Entrapped

Entrapped by Barbara Kyle

Entrapped is a thriller of high stakes: life and death, love, and oil.
Set in Alberta, Entrapped is the story of Liv Gardner, an ambitious young oil executive intent on stopping farmer Tom Wainwright who is sabotaging her rigs after a spill of lethal “sour” gas poisoned his wife. Desperate to save the company she built, Liv plants evidence to frame Tom. But when the evidence is used to indict him for a murder he didn’t commit, Liv alone can save him.
"Kyle has peopled a landscape of smoke and poison and vast natural beauty with a cast of vivid characters, and none of them, from the slick oil baron to the vengeful radical to the not-quite-professional investigator are quite what they seem … many jolts and twists and turns that will leave no one unsatisfied." Giles Blunt, internationally acclaimed author of "Crime Machine"

Have you ever read a book that you got to the end and wanted to cry….. because it was over?

That was Entrapped.

Barbara Kyle just went straight to my favorite author’s list.

I have never read any of her other novels, but they are on my TBR list now.  From looking through her book list, I was surprised to see she typically writes historical novels.  I expected the rest of her novels to be modern day too.  Lucky me, I love historical settings also.

Entrapped is definitely not your typical romance novel, lots of mystery, lots of action, and very fast.  Not short, fast.  I could not put it down.  I started reading it after taking all the kids to school and just finished it.  Work to do?  To bad, I had a book I was completely engrossed in.  Now it’s done.  I’m not bitter, I promise.  It’s my own fault for being a fast reader.  I’ll never learn how to stretch out an awesome book.  When I get into one, I just have to keep going and going and going and going, until I’m done, then I’m sad it’s over.

You fall for the characters, Liv, Tom, Molly, Chris.  I especially loved Molly’s interactions with Liv.  Kids have this way of knowing what a person is like.  I just wanted to scream at Liv, how can you not see the kind of man he is buy looking at his interactions with his daughter.

But, then again, Tom wasn’t perfect.  He had his own demons.

Your heart breaks for Tom though, and for his daughter, when you get into his story, why he is doing what he is doing, what exactly happened to his wife.

And the gas problem.  I know we need natural gas, I know we need oil, but in this book, Barbara highlights exactly why we need to find other solutions for our energy problems.  (No, she doesn’t preach at you, this is definitely a situation that can occur and has occurred.)  Along with being sad because I want a sequel now (please?  There has to be a way!), it left me wanting to do more to find a way to deal with this problem.  Read the book, you’ll see what I mean.  You will feel the same way when you hit that 100% mark on your Kindle .

In Entrapped, none of the main players are perfect, all of them make mistakes, big mistakes, but the question is, can they work past those problems (lies, deception, murder, etc) to get back to where they need to be.

I can’t tell you.

I’d ruin the book.

I know how much you all hate spoilers.

Inside The Spaghetti Bowl – Frank Zaccari Guest Post

Posted by Heather Manning On November - 15 - 2011

Inside the Spaghetti Bowl I have had the pleasure of reading Inside the Spaghetti Bowl and I will share my thoughts with you on this heartwarming book with you tomorrow.  In the meantime, I wanted to share this post that Frank Zaccari wrote for us over here at Not Everyone’s Mama!

Every family goes through difficult times when a loved one becomes ill. Even though your parents have lived a long and meaningful life, it is never easy to see them grow old and sick. “Inside the Spaghetti Bowl” is collaboration with my brothers Anthony and Steve. It is the actual story of our family dealing with the failing health of our mother.

This book is a celebration of life, family, culture and tradition as we document the last eight days of our mother’s life. “Inside the Spaghetti Bowl” shares the tales about the memories, trials and sacrifices made by our parents and grandparents that allowed the family to live the American dream.

The book’s main theme discusses the unconditional love families share through the good and the bad. I hope the readers will see their own family as they catch a glimpse into my family, a family that is always there for each other no matter what the cost.

“Inside the Spaghetti Bowl” discusses specific events that shaped the lives of three generations.  It is not a self-help book, discussing how to cope with aging parents, but simply a story about putting family first.

The inspiration came from the chilling fact that we were probably not the only ones dealing with this unfortunate scenario. As the baby boomer generation ages, so do the parents who raised them.

I was flying across the country to come back to my hometown three times in three months. As I heard the stories regarding the history, traditions, culture, good times and sad times, I knew I was not the only ‘baby boomer’ facing this heartbreaking task. I hope readers see their family in this book, and it makes them smile.”

About Inside the Spaghetti Bowl

The book is based on the last eight days of our mother’s life. It is a celebration of life, family, culture and tradition. As my relatives came to pay their last respects, we heard so many wonderful stories about the trials and sacrifices made by our parents and grandparents so we could live the American dream.

This is a book about family and unconditional love through the good times and bad. It is about a family who is and always will be there for each other no matter what. We hope you see your family in this book and the memories make you smile.

Especially chocolate, breads, and pasta.

All of that stuff that loves to gather on your hips and stomach.

2011 Holiday Gift Ideas – Journals Unlimited

Posted by Heather Manning On October - 7 - 2011

journal-4

Perfect gift idea for everyone!

I just received something absolutely fantabulous.  I was really really excited when I opened up this package that arrived.

Journals Unlimited

Have you heard of them?

If not, check them out!

In this day and age we do everything via technology, we blog instead of physically writing in a diary, we use apps for our grocery lists, we send emails instead of handwritten letters, the list goes on and on.  And while all of this moving forward has been fabulous, I feel we have lost a lot by not writing things down like we used to.

Have you ever held your mother or your grandmother’s old diary?  Felt it?  Smelled it?  Seen their familiar handwriting?  Being taken back to another time, a time when you were younger? Imagine after we are gone, our children going through our stuff and smiling as they pull out this journal that we had written in daily, our thoughts, our goals, our aspirations for our children.  Imagine them holding it to their chest and then smiling through their watery eyes as they read the words that you put down to paper.

I say my blog is my diary, and it is.  I plan on printing out my My Life posts in a book format for each of my kids to hold on to.  But that being said, I have now started using this also, I can imagine them feeling the way I do when I hold one of my grandmother’s letters to me, rereading what she said, seeing her handwriting.  It brings back so many good memories for me.

I received the one called Daily Devotions – A Prayer Journal from their Write It Down series.  They also have their The Color Collection, Notepad Series, Between Me and You Series, and Custom Journals.  They also have Wholesale Accounts for those of you with businesses that work with this type of item.

Journal-2Isn’t that pretty?

Journal-1

The back of one page and the start of another

Journal-3

The start of my first entry

I dove write in.  I have decided that I will use this every day as I do my Bible reading for the day, that way I can include my favorite scripture, and though I pray more than once in the day, I also can take that time when I pray for understanding of God’s word for me today, to really take the time to pray for those that I know need his help.

journal-4

This would make the most AWESOME teacher’s gift this holiday season.  It is their Special Teacher Journal.  It is $21.95.  I spend that much on coffee gift card and coffee cup each year for my kids’ teachers.  I am going this route this year.  It will last so much longer and I think it will be so much more meaningful.  Something they can cherish and they will think of your child when they pull this out to reflect over this past year.

So many gift ideas:

That is just the beginning.   You have to see how many different journals they have, each one unique, beautiful, yet sturdy to last, they are amazing.

Take a peak.  I guarantee you will find something for yourself, if not for EVERYONE in your life.  A soccer journal, seriously?  How awesome is that?  Perfect for my kids (or their soccer mom)!

I have to take a moment to highlight this during breast cancer awareness month.

My Pink Ribbon Awareness Journal

A Pink Ribbon Angel adorns the cover of this beautiful journal promoting breast cancer awareness. This new title has lined pages so you can use it for any purpose. Each of us has had or will have a personal association with a family member, friend, neighbor, co-worker, (or us ourselves) diagnosed with breast cancer. For that reason, Journals Unlimited, Inc. has chosen to donate $1 from the purchase of every Pink Ribbon Journal to The Breast Cancer Research Foundation®. Help us to help them find a cure in our lifetime and aid in the prevention of breast cancer.

Having 2 survivors in my family, I love them for this.  My cousin Brandi and my Aunt Jackie are both cancer free.  I love you both!

Find Their Deals

Journals Unlimited is getting a big

thumbsup

for being a product that we can instill a love of writing for in our children and providing heirloom quality products that we can leave to them when we are gone.

I want to thank Journals Unlimited again for the Daily Devotions – A Prayer Journal they sent me.  I will cherish it always.

Fires…Accidental or Arson

Fires…Accidental or Arson?: Fire Investigations by Richard J. Keyworth(Kindle Edition)

Author Richard J. Keyworth stands tall and his courage and commitment to fighting and investigating fires stand even taller. His account of 14 of the innumerable fires he investigated will intrigue, inform and educate fellow firefighters and law enforcement professionals. Because fire is mystical at times and practical at others, FIRE… Accidental or Arson? will also entrance the general public. His investigations will twist and turn and take place in likely and unlikely locations. Readers will be as interested in the investigative process as the investigator’s cohorts and the investigator himself.
The real names of the perpetrators and the victims do not appear in Keyworth’s manuscript, as a courtesy to those who have tragic memories and to those who were charged with arson and either convicted or acquitted. Their stories are told in an entertaining manner; Keyworth is an attention-gripping story teller. Flip up the sides of his fire helmet and he is Sherlock Holmes.
FIRE…Accidental or Arson? invites the reader to stand inside incinerated buildings and follow Keyworth and his expert associates as they explore the evidence and determine the cause. The conclusions of his scientific investigations will illuminate the guilty and absolve the innocent. “A fire investigator is a finder of the facts and a seeker of the truth,” says Keyworth. “A single circumstance does not cause the fire, it is a series of events and circumstances which come together to cause a fire.” It is this series of events and circumstances which leads him to the true cause of the fire. He brings over 40 years of experience as well as countless hours of education and training to this book. Mr. Keyworth is a consummate professional.

When I got an invitation to read Richard J. Keyworth’s new book Fires…Accidental or Arson?: Fire Investigations I was really really excited.  I love to read and I’m always happy to get a new book, but this was a subject I have never gotten to read anything about before.  I love to learn things though, so this was right up my ally.

I got it today.

I’m done.

I didn’t put it down for more than a few minutes at a time.

It is so good!  Richard writes in an every day style that is easy for those of us who aren’t in on the technical jargon that fire professionals would be in on to understand.  He does though, when needed, describe things that the average person wouldn’t understand.  That’s vital to understanding why he comes to the conclusions that he does.

I have to say there was one story that really surprised me (and other people who are professionals in his area of expertise).  It was the story called My Hair Set My House On Fire.  I don’t want to give the ending away because you truly need to read this book, but I will never ever think about my hair supplies and freshly laundered linens in the same way.  He saved someone’s life there in that story.  I never ever would have come up with the reason behind the fire like he did.

Let’s face it, I couldn’t come up with the reasons behind any of the fires.  He truly is brilliant.

The story They Cut My Welfare absolutely broke my heart.  I’m sure it would anyone else, but it especially hit me hard as a mother to 4.  I don’t understand some people.  I truly don’t.

There are 14 stories in this book.  They all stem from true fire investigations that he has worked on and solved.  I honestly cannot wait to see if he will make a Fires… Accidental or Arson 2.  I would love to read more of these.  Seeing how his mind worked to solve through these things that other people would automatically chalk up to one or the other and how he came to a completely different conclusion was really neat.

I’d recommend this to anyone who is like me and just has a thirst for knowledge of any kind.  A person who wants to learn about everything.  I’d recommend this to fire fighters who I can imagine nodding their heads up and down as they read how he came to this conclusion or that.  I think anyone who likes true crime stories would love this book. I’d recommend this book to just about anyone, including my (almost) 12 year old son who has the same thirst for learning that I do.  There are a few things in the book that I questioned before deciding that I will let Jordan read it.  Richard wasn’t gory in his descriptions though and Jordan knows bad people do bad things and I think he would find the working behind the scenes to be interesting.

Jordan also has fire fighting in his blood.  His dad was fire chief of the fire department in his town for years, then his Uncle was, and his brother Nick has been a firefighter for the same department.  Now his brother is a dispatcher and I know all 3 of them were paramedics for years.  I’m not sure if his Uncle and his brother still are?

October-6Even his choice of costume 2 years ago and no fake plastic fire helmet would do.

(You wonder why I think he would love this book?)

I want to thank Richard J. Keyworth again for reaching out to me and providing me with a copy of his book.  I really enjoyed it!  I think it may be one that gets a second read from me.

Fires… Accidental or Arson is available on Amazon both in book and in Kindle formats.  I also found it at Barnes and Noble.

Green Books Campaign – Turtle Dolphin Dreams

Posted by Heather Manning On November - 10 - 2010

greenbooks campaigned

This review is part of the Green Books campaign.Today 200 bloggers take a stand to support books printed in an eco-friendly manner by simultaneously publishing reviews of 200 books printed on recycled or FSC-certified paper. By turning a spotlight on books printed using eco- friendly paper, we hope to raise the awareness of book buyers and encourage everyone to take the environment into consideration when purchasing books.

The campaign is organized for the second time by Eco-Libris, a green company working to make reading more sustainable. We invite you to join the discussion on "green" books and support books printed in an eco-friendly manner! A full list of participating blogs and links to their reviews is available on Eco-Libris website.

I was so excited to hear about this campaign.  On my desk I have a huge stack of “dead trees” that I need to review.  My chosen format to read is an e-book on my Kindle.  I’m good with reading a book printed on recycled material also.  It’s an extra touch that I think would make a huge difference if every publisher would do it.  The pages feel the same to me.  I don’t see why others haven’t embraced this yet.

I got to review the book Turtle Dolphin Dreams by Marian K. Volkman for this campaign.  I picked this book because I am a huge animal lover and dolphins are my favorite animal.  You know that I support them if you check out the top of the post.  You’ll see this button – Help Me Support This Cause.

I feel what we humans are doing to them (and all of them animals) is wrong and if things don’t change more, it may be irreparable.  Let me give you the info on the book.

What if we shared planet Earth with other intelligent species? What if inter-species communication were really possible? Seek out some answers in Turtle Dolphin Dreams… An extremely unusual work of fiction in which three creatures, a turtle, a dolphin and a human link minds through dreams to bring a unique perception of the world. Most of the narration is by the Turtle (via the human) and Dolphin’s voice comes through both turtle and human, yet somehow this strange book hangs together and holds the reader’s attention.

51F1E0EKTHL._SL500_AA300_

We do share the planet with species that are highly intelligent and we are destroying them.  IE: The Cove in Japan.  Literally destroying them, not accidently as a by product of pollution or encroaching on their territory.  Destroying them for nothing more than plain human greed and selfishness.

This book is wonderful.  It comes at it from the angle of what would they say to us?  What would these dolphins, the turtles, any of these creatures really, what would they say to us if they could tell us what they wanted us to know.  These are living creatures who were in their areas before we came in to destroy them.  These are living creatures who are part of the ecosystem that we take for granted, that we are destroying.

This book is thought provoking, it’s inspirational, it is for anyone who cares about anything to do with animals and our planet.  Take a peak and see what the turtle, what the dolphin, what would they say to us if they could communicate with us.  I loved this book.  I want Jordan to read this book.  I want all of my kids as they get older to read this book.  To truly take a look around us and try to come up with a solution where we can co-exist without us hurting them so much.

Check out Turtle Dolphin Dreams on Amazon and read the reviews. They are amazing. This book touched each person who read it as much as it touched me.  I think it could do the same for you!  Make sure when you read it that you really look at the illustrations.  I thought that they added a beautiful touch to the book!

Thank you so much to 2010 Green Books Campaign for letting me be a part of this.  The book was amazing and the concept behind the campaign is amazing!

Speed Dating With The Dead

Posted by Heather Manning On September - 16 - 2010

SpeedDating300 Speed Dating with the Dead by Scott Nicholson

When Wayne "Digger" Wilson hosts a paranormal conference at the haunted White Horse Inn, he has motives beyond searching for the inn’s legendary ghosts.

Years ago, he made a honeymoon promise to his wife Beth that if one of them died, the survivor would return to the White Horse to summon the other’s lost spirit. Now she’s dead and Digger’s back, with the daughter they conceived during that fateful honeymoon sixteen years before. And the ghost hunters are stirring up ancient evils that were better left in peace, because the inn’s basement is home to a circle of demons that have been waiting for Wayne to return.

They want his teenage daughter Kendra, and they’ll play whatever tricks they need in order to satisfy their dark desires. And at the White Horse Inn, not even angels can be trusted . . .

Wow!  I <3 Scott Nicholson.  Here I go thinking that I am going to read a “normal” ghost story, forgetting that when you are reading a Scott Nicholson book there is no normal to gauge against.  I hadn’t read the description before I started.  I just jumped right on in.

I actually got up as I was reading to come out and get a glass of water and kind of did a little dance as I was reading and walking past my husband.  Scary scary!  What’s scary scary? my husband asked.  This book is scary scary.  I say it in all of my reviews, and I’ll say it again, in my opinion Scott is up there with the greats, King, Koontz, Cook.  He scares that pants off of me and I LOVE it!

This book is based at a paranormal conference in the Appalachian Mountains at a hotel that sells itself on being haunted.  Funny how the manager of the hotel works to give this illusion, when in reality this place is loaded with things you don’t want to bump into ever.  Digger had made a promise to his wife both on their honeymoon and on her death bed that he would meet her back at the White Horse.  Here he is, will she be there?  And if she is there, will she be good?  or evil?

No spoilers here people.  Read the book!

Like his other books, Scott brings in so many interesting characters that play an integral role in the book, Kendra – Digger and Beth’s daughter, Cody, Roach, different members of the conference, some who are full on believers, others who are skeptics to the highest degree.

Read an excerpt here.

On my definitely recommended to read list!  If you are like me and love the paranormal, love ghosts, spirits, all of that, or if you like horror books, or if you just want something different to read, this is an excellent book to grab!

Check out Scott’s blog tour right going on right now!  He’s giving away at least 2 Kindle 3′s and a 3rd if The Red Church (which I reviewed here) makes it into the top 100!  He has the book priced at $.99 right now.  Grab it and read it on your Kindle, other reader, laptop, ipad, ipod, whatever you read your books on!  It’s one of my favorite books.  Very very strange in a good way!

Follow Scott on Twitter @hauntedcomputer and on Facebook!
