Do you ever have those moments where your kids are non-stop fighting and you just want to lock yourself in your room and scream La La La La I can’t hear you while shoving your fingers in your ears?
So glad I’m not alone!
I have 4 kids. That is a lot of fighting, bickering, and yelling between different combinations of children and it drives me up a wall.
I read about this technique on another blog, used it when Jordan and Kat were smaller, and than forgot about it. Alyce and Nano were too young for awhile, but now, all my children are old enough to stand there for a few minutes.
I’m sorry I don’t remember what blog it came from, it was years ago, but this was something her mom had her and her sister do and I thought, fabulous idea!
How does it work?
You can see in the picture above exactly how it works. Amazingly simple and effective.
You can also see in the picture that 3 of my 4 children were having a bad moment. Jordan walked in and saw what was going on, cracked up, and was told to get out because I had more corners.
When two of my children are fighting, smacking, squabbling, etc, I bring them to me and have them stand eye to eye.
No talking, no moving away from each other. Just standing there looking each other in the eyes.
When do they stop?
Can you see the anger in my youngest daughter’s body above?
When you can visibly see that anger go away. No words needed, just watch their body language. When you can see them relaxing, and possibly even smiling at each other, they are done.
I wouldn’t make them stand there all day if it doesn’t work, but a few minutes for my younger ones is usually all it takes.
Usually the fighting calms down for awhile after that. I think it is because they both have calmed down and because they don’t want to stand there and look at each other when they are mad.
Why is Nano in the corner too in the picture?
He hit his sister.
That’s the first timeout that I have ever done where he stayed and I didn’t have to keep putting him back in it.
I’ll take the small victories!
Have a great day!
