The Mentalist – Who Was The Mole?

Posted by Heather Manning On September - 30 - 2011

During Season 3, Patrick is on a mission to identify who Red John’s mole within the CBI is. Before Patrick revealed the mole, who did you suspect it was? What clues led you to suspect that person?

During season 3 Patrick was focused on finding on the mole was in the CBI and we all had our suspicions as to who it was.  I was wondering if it was O’Laughlin, LaRoch, or Rigsby.  I was even suspecting Kimball Cho to be the mole because he was never thought to be it.  I never quite knew because you know it is NEVER the obvious one right?  That’s how TV shows work, if it was obvious, they wouldn’t continue on.  And the A-ha! moment is always the best.  I can’t wait to see what is going to happen during this season.

Who did you think it was?

How To Volunteer With Passion

Posted by Heather Manning On September - 29 - 2011

Activist Reveals That Passion is the Key to Volunteerism

See my previous post/article on Lisa Sellman

<– The Legend of the Wolves of Gunflint Lake by Lisa Sellman

If volunteerism is a measure of someone’s passion, then Lisa Sellman’s knows no bounds.
Sellman, a professional dog trainer and owner of a pet care business, volunteers periodically with no fewer than 16 different organizations, with her activities ranging from working at an animal shelter to taking disabled kids on nature hikes during the summer. She is a community activist and lifelong volunteer, and she knows what it means to serve others.
"If you want to feel good, volunteer," said Sellman, also author of the children’s book The Legend of the Wolves of Gunflint Lake (www.lisasellman.com), which contains the theme of the value of community service. "There are few ways to feel as good about yourself as volunteering. Now, I realize that many of us are wrapped up with work and family, trying to make ends meet, so the idea of volunteering can seem like it’s just another ‘have-to’ to write into the already crowded calendar. However, I know for a fact that if you do it right, it can be a great stress reliever and a source of true joy in your life."
The key to discovering that feeling is to let your passion guide you when you decide to volunteer, she added. Her tips for beginning volunteers include:

  • Choose Wisely – Many people get "roped into" volunteering for an organization because their boss is involved with a charity or a family member is working on a community project. Those can be rewarding ways to enter volunteerism, but only if the project is a match for your personal interests. The most important aspect to volunteerism is to find what you love, and direct your energies into a charity or community organization that matches those passions. If you’re an animal lover, work with a wildlife rescue mission or animal shelter. If you are a nature buff, there are plenty of environmental foundations that can use an extra set of hands. If sports is your thing, there are plenty of community recreation centers that need coaches for needy kids enrolled in their programs. No matter your interest, you can match it to a cause that needs help. Just pick the right one, and your volunteer time won’t be a chore – it will be a joy.
  • Watch Your Schedule – As much as you want your passion to direct your choice of project, you don’t want those volunteer projects to rule your schedule. Make sure you balance your volunteer time carefully so that your professional life and your family time doesn’t take a critical hit. Most organizations will take as much time as you offer them, but if you only have an hour or two each week, they’ll take that time, too. Your volunteer life should not consume your work or home life.
  • Have Fun – Helping others is its own reward, but it shouldn’t feel like a chore. Even the most mundane task can be fun if you manage it with a sense of humor and passion for helping others.

"You don’t have to spend a lot of time as a volunteer," Sellman said. "If everyone gave even just an hour a week, every community organization in the country would be turning volunteers away, because they’d have more than enough. The key is to understand that volunteerism doesn’t have to take over your life, and that if you do it right, it will add far more to your spirit than it takes away from your calendar."

How to Fix Your Microdermal Piercing After Being Hit

Posted by Heather Manning On September - 29 - 2011

I am not responsible for anything that might happen to your microdermal  or your skin if you do what I did.  This was a last ditch effort for me in an attempt to save my microdermal.  I would suggest talking to your piercer first, always.

My poor microdermal has been through hell since I got it done back in February.

182064_10150391076840551_702180550_17279482_7024241_nThat is the day I got it done.  It healed nicely.  I loved it.  It’s my favorite piercing.

219048_10150527439000551_702180550_17979099_7651299_o

After it was healed.

I’ve snagged it on sweatshirts a few times, literally felt the rip as it well, ripped.  In fact, I snagged it on that sweatshirt I have on in the picture above the first time. I got it caught on my pillow a few times.  Each time, I put a band aid over it for a couple of days and it was fine.

The worst though was when I got hit in the face with a soccer ball.  My husband was taking shots at my son so he could practice his goalie work.  I wasn’t paying attention and smack, right into my microdermal.

328282_10150750287955551_702180550_20275481_7489152_o

If you look under my dermal there, you can see the lump.  I had make up on, but without it, you could totally see the anchor under my skin.  It was completely silver/gray.

I went to my piercer, who wasn’t there.  The other guy said, I don’t mess with micros.  Come back when she is here.  I was worried she was going to take it out, so I didn’t go back.

Last night, it was really pushed up and I was worried about it.

I started surfing and searching how to fix your microdermal.  All I was finding was how to take care of it and that you need to have it taken out if your body rejects it.  My body hadn’t rejected it, I had pretty much ripped all of the tissue out of the anchor holes.  That is the whole reason for this post, if I had trouble finding something about going through something similar to what I did, others are going to also.

Finally, after much digging, I found this site.

I don’t suggest you doing this because your not a piercer but if your stuck and you have no other option you want to push really hard with your pointer finger in the center of the gem on your anchor pushing it straight down onto your skin. You would do this before you started the 3-4 day round circle band aid rejection reversing trick. get it? hope that helps..

What did I have to lose?  I was going to lose my microdermal anyway if something didn’t happen, and it looked horrible even with make up over it.

Went to the mirror and started pushing down.  It didn’t hurt at all and I started noticing a difference right away.  Kept pushing and pushing and….

this is disgusting, weak stomachs skip down a bit.  I think the tissue and pus from injuring it was actually stuck UNDER my anchor and was pushing it up against the skin, because a lot of not completely dry, but not liquid, stuff came out.  I just kept pushing until it was lying flat again and I couldn’t see the color of the anchor through my skin.

I put a band aid over it last night so I wouldn’t snag it, but I truly don’t think it needs to heal again, it didn’t hurt at all.  It was just disgusting the stuff that came out, the smell.  Be forewarned, if you have what I had, it stinks….bad.

It’s almost completely flat under my skin again.  I’m going to keep working on it but I’m so relieved.  Have to take out your favorite piercing?  Please no.  I had to find another option.  I was desperate enough to have my piercer move it around under my skin if she would.

Turned out, drastic measures weren’t needed.

Have a great day!

Women Have One Flaw

Posted by Heather Manning On September - 28 - 2011

Women have strengths that amaze men…
They bear hardships and they carry burdens,
but they hold happiness, love and joy.
They smile when they want to scream.
They sing when they want to cry.
They cry when they are happy
and laugh when they are nervous.
They fight for what they believe in…
They stand up to injustice.
They don’t take "no" for an answer
when they believe there is a better solution.
They go without so their family can have.
They go to the doctor with a frightened friend.
They love unconditionally.
They cry when their children excel
and cheer when their friends get awards.
They are happy when they hear about
a birth or a wedding.
Their hearts break when a friend dies.
They grieve at the loss of a family member,
yet they are strong when they
think there is no strength left.
They know that a hug and a kiss
can heal a broken heart.
Women come in all shapes, sizes and colors.
They’ll drive, fly, walk, run or e-mail you
to show how much they care about you.
The heart of a woman is what
makes the world keep turning.
They bring joy, hope and love.
They have compassion and ideas.
They give moral support to their
family and friends.
Women have vital things to say
and everything to give..
HOWEVER, IF THERE IS ONE FLAW IN WOMEN,
IT IS THAT THEY FORGET THEIR WORTH.

Courageous Fathers Bible Study Provides Insight into Christian Fatherhood

Posted by Heather Manning On September - 28 - 2011

CPH Bible Study Explores the Lives and Faith of Twelve Fathers of the Bible

On Twitter – @ConcordiaPub

203974  What do David, Noah, Abraham, Job, and Solomon have in common? One of their commonalities is that they are all significant father figures from the Bible. While some offer positive examples, others demonstrate the struggles that are faced. Either way, the men from biblical times present a unique and much needed lesson to fathers of today’s world—that fatherhood takes courage.

To share the stories of these biblical father figures, Concordia Publishing House has released a Bible study titled Courageous Fathers of the Bible. The 12-session study is written by Pastor Joel Biermann and can be purchased at cph.org.

The Courageous Fathers Bible study challenges and inspires men to become courageous fathers of faith.

“A child has only one father,” said Biermann. “When that child does not have a father who is investing in his work of fatherhood, the most tragic loss is often the failure to instill Christian faith into the next generation.”

Although the setting and subject matter faced during biblical times may be slightly different than those faced by today’s fathers, the stories speak to the needs of twenty-first-century men.

“These men are just like men today,” says Biermann. “They make mistakes, they sacrifice for their kids, and they strive to form their kids into the truth of God and His Word. Studying them provides surprising insight into the realities of raising children.”

In fact, as participants become more familiar with biblical fathers, they will find that the study questions and answers ultimately remind them that although fatherhood is a challenge and takes courage, they are not alone.

The fathers discussed in Courageous Fathers of the Bible include Adam, Noah, Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, David, Job, Solomon, Joseph, Jairus, the Official, and the Prodigal’s Father.

“Giving careful contemplation to each of the twelve men who make up the study was quite an enjoyable experience, with some surprising discoveries,” said Biermann. “Focusing only on the fatherhood angle sheds a fresh light on each of the men.  Every one of them provides thoughts and insights that are quite relevant.”

The Middle – Covering It Up

Posted by Heather Manning On September - 28 - 2011

In one episode, Brick shares Sue’s room where they accidently knock a hole in her wall, they try to fix it but only make it worse. They attempt to cover it up by putting a poster over it but it doesn’t work. Have you ever been in a situation similar to Brick and Sue’s? See how the Hecks brilliantly true-to-life kids cover up their accident on The Second Season of The Middle on DVD, currently available for pre-order (http://bit.ly/qliHr2) and hitting shelves on 9/27/11!

I’m trying to think back to things I did that I tried to cover up.  See, I have a problem.  I don’t remember a lot of my childhood.  Really, I don’t.  I have a bad memory.

I can remember something Jordan did though.  When he was about 6 he decided he wanted to be Hulk Hogan.  He’d watched Hogan Knows Best (unknown to me, thank you parental locks now) and thought the best way to start to get big and strong would be to eat raw eggs.

Yes, raw eggs.

He snuck in the fridge and took probably 6 eggs out.

Took them quietly back to his bedroom and started to partake of the eggs.

He didn’t like it, I assume.

I had no idea until months later.

One would think that raw eggs left out would have a smell, especially once they have been cracked open.  Not always.

I was cleaning out from underneath his bed.  I do that every once in awhile.  I make them clean their own rooms, but every so often, I get the urge to go in there and do it the way I want it done.  It doesn’t strike very often.

There under his bed was a hard mess of raw eggs that he had thrown over the headboard. They cracked and dried into the carpet.

Honestly, all of my kids have done things like that.

Not concerned about salmonella poisoning at all.

Got to love them.

That Was A Big Surprise

Posted by Heather Manning On September - 27 - 2011

Philippians 1:6  And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to the completion at the day of Jesus Christ.

Color me strange.  When it comes to fuzzy animals, I always pick girls.  Nothing against the male gender…. ok, boy parts on dogs freak me out when they hump your leg.  Honesty is always the best policy, right?

With Elaina, our cat, though the whole point of asking for the girl kitten was because male cats spray, right?

K, so I took Elaina to get spayed today.

I could have sworn she was in heat.

Naughty cat that she has been lately, trying to escape, jumping up and knocking my cherished teddies off their shelf, knocking everything off the counters, etc etc etc.

I dropped her off and came back home.

My phone rang.

Hi!  This is the vet – I wanted to let you know that there will be no extra charge.  Elaina is not in heat because Elaina is …… a boy.

We’ll be neutering him today.

—– uh – duh – what?

Elaina is a boy?

We thought we’d give you a chance to think of a new name.

Poor Elaina just learned HIS name.

Since Elaina was chosen from mama’s favorite show, Vampire Diaries, we looked at the other 2 main characters.

I asked on Facebook and it was decided that Elaina is now Damon.

See, Damon stalks everything very coolly.  Totally cool.  He stalks the dogs, he stalks my birds …. actually, he only drools over them because they are in cages unless he is locked in my room.  He stalks my bathrobe, my skirts, Katiana’s hair.  He cracks me up when the dogs aren’t paying attention and he drops down on them from the couch as they prance by.

When I went to pick the poor thing up, I was leaving and she said, you might want to go out the back door.  There is a big dog coming in the front.

Oh, he likes dogs.  His best friends are 2 dogs.

O…..K.  Just so you know, he doesn’t like cats.

I guess he was offended by the 2 cats that live at the vet.

Didn’t take to them at all.

That’s my cat – actually a boy (in my defense, I took the lady’s word for it and never checked, and he is still a kitten), loves dogs, hates cats, and actually jumps in the shower as soon as the water comes on.

Yes, my cat loves water.

September11That’s the poor thing on the way home. At 6 months, my kitten is bigger than my 2 year old chihuahua mix. :) He’s all attitude right now.  Exactly what did I do to deserve that treatment?  Not as fast tonight.  I beat him to the door when it’s opened and he doesn’t make it under my car where I then have to tempt him out.

I was cracking up when I read the paperwork.

Your cat has received their rabies vaccine.  The injection site may be sore.

Um, my cat just had his testicles removed and I’m worried about the injection site being sore?  I’m pretty sure that’s not the area he is babying right now.

Poor baby.

Have a great night!

Stop Bullying: Speak Up

Posted by Heather Manning On September - 19 - 2011

309128_176252625784333_170201196389476_397666_843758217_n Bullying is something near and dear to my heart since I have had to deal with this with Jordan.  I hate the way kids treat other kids.  It should be near to all of our hearts.  No kid should have to be torn down, beat up, and just completely humiliated. :(

Because of that, I wanted to pass this on:

Facebook and Time Warner Inc. Launch Stop Bullying: Speak Up App

Time Warner Also Announces CNN’s Anderson Cooper 360° Second Annual Town Hall on Bullying to Air Sunday, Oct. 9, from Rutgers University

New York, NY; Palo Alto, CA – (Sept. 19, 2011) – Facebook and Time Warner Inc. announced today the launch of the Stop Bullying: Speak Up Social Pledge App, an interactive social media pledge that enables educators, parents and students to make a personal commitment—and recruit others to join them—to help stop bullying. Today’s news comes on the heels of a previously announced partnership to bring together and expand Facebook and Time Warner’s individual efforts against bullying.

This new social pledge app, accessed at www.facebook.com/stopbullyingspeakup, and named after the original bullying prevention initiative by Cartoon Network, represents the latest development in both companies’ long-term commitment to integrate broadcast, print, online and social media to inspire thoughtful conversation and share useful information and resources about bullying prevention, including situational recommendations for young victims and bystanders. Facebook, CNN, Cartoon Network and Time Inc. (PEOPLE, SPORTS ILLUSTRATED and TIME) will bring together their considerable resources and reach to hundreds of millions of people to promote the app with a comprehensive multi-platform campaign.

In addition to the app launch, Time Warner’s CNN announced its second Anderson Cooper 360° Town Hall special on Bullying. The special will premiere Sunday, Oct. 9, at 8 p.m. (ET/PT) from Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey. Host Anderson Cooper, who has covered numerous stories about bullying, will break news with the results of an innovative Anderson Cooper 360° investigation that provides new insights about why kids bully each other. He will also speak with students, families, experts in the field and other special guests to determine if education, legislation and significant media attention over the last year has helped the bullying prevention effort on school campuses, in social media communities or in local neighborhoods.

“The Stop Bullying: Speak Up Social Pledge App is rooted in the fact that students, educators and parents have the power to stop bullying by speaking up when they see it occur,” said Marne Levine, Vice President of Global Public Policy at Facebook. “The launch of this campaign reinforces our deep commitment to the safety and security of kids everywhere. By working with Time Warner, our hope is to inspire millions of people who witness bullying to take action.”

“Today’s introduction of the Stop Bullying: Speak Up app is the continuation of a number of projects all of us are committed to focusing on around this crucial issue,” added Stuart Snyder, President/COO of Cartoon Network. “I know I speak for all of our partners at Time Warner when I say we are extremely proud of the care and thought that both of our companies have put into this effort to help educate and empower kids and adults with some of the key tools and resources needed to speak up when faced with the issue of bullying.”

The Stop Bullying: Speak Up Social Pledge Facebook App

A cornerstone of the bullying prevention campaign is the Stop Bullying: Speak Up Social Pledge Facebook App. Aimed specifically at inspiring bullying bystanders – witnesses to bullying – the App enables students, educators, and parents to take a pledge to specific actions that will help stop bullying, share their Pledge and stories with friends and family, recruit others to join the movement, and start their own school-based bullying prevention groups on Facebook.

The App also features a personal greeting and thank you from Anderson Cooper, as well as a ‘Take Action Center’ that includes tools and resources from several nonprofit, government, and academic organizations.

Celebrities such as actress Selena Gomez, singer Enrique Iglesias and CJ Manigo, Ali Sepasyar, and Jackson Rogow, hosts of Cartoon Network’s Dude, What Would Happen, have been among the first to officially take the pledge to speak up against bullying and are asking others to follow their lead. These recognizable personalities are sharing their personal experiences with bullying, good and/or bad ways they dealt with it, and what they hope the future might bring for those who experience bullying in the future.

The Social Pledge App was developed by social marketing agency, Tenthwave. Headquartered in New York City, Tenthwave provides digital marketing and creative services ranging from web design and development, online promotions and sweepstakes, social media marketing and online brand activation.
