I Did Not Know They Could Do That

Posted by Heather Manning On February - 10 - 2011

But it works.

What might you ask?

You know that Jordan has trouble getting up and ready for school.  Since the apartment burned down, it’s been worse.  So much so that Katiana has been getting tardies because of him.  Yesterday was the final straw.  He made her 15 minutes late for school.  He doesn’t weigh a lot less than I do, so physically getting him ready and carrying him to the car is not an option.

After dropping them off yesterday, I called the principal.  I was hoping he would have a greater impact on Jordan than I do.  (Have I mentioned that our principal was voted elementary principal of the year in Iowa?  I adore him.)

He brought Jordan to his office and told him what happens with kids who fight their parents.  He showed him numbers taped to his computer.  Police officer numbers.  He said when kids fight their parents, they don’t fight any more, they just call him and he picks up the kid with a police officer and takes them to school.  He said, Jordan, you’re not the kind of kid who needs picked up by a police officer to get to school.  Jordan agreed.

He also told Jordan if he goes one week without a tardy that he can have a buddy lunch in his office.  Bring a couple of friends down, they can turn on the cartoon network and have fun during lunch.  Jordan said he preferred a root beer float.  The principal agreed.

Jordan was in the car this morning by 8:20.  (Yesterday he wasn’t in the car until 8:50, the time the school starts.)  He was at school with plenty of time to go to his locker and get to class.

Yay Mr Principal.

On the Jordan front, when I took him to the doctor the other day we found out he had lost 6 lbs in a week.  You know what that tells me?  That Jordan was sneaking a lot more food than I thought he had been.  He isn’t allowed to open Uncle Josh’s fridge without permission.  It’s having an impact already.  A huge impact.

I’ve lost about 10 lbs in the last 2 weeks.  I know that’s not healthy.  It’s called the stress diet.  The first few days I was so sick to my stomach over what happened that I couldn’t eat.  I’m still having problems choking food down.  Nothing tastes good right now.  I’m eating, but a few bites here and there.  I just don’t feel like eating.

Hopefully I’ll start feeling more like myself soon.  I’m still taking my antidepressant and my doctor gave me lorazapam Monday after the fire. I’ve only taken 3 of those in over a week and only when I feel a panic attack come on.

The positive is Jordan got to school on time.  Yay Jordan and again yay Principal!

Have a great day!

If that worked to get Jordan to school on time, great — I have never heard of anything like that though.

Kelly, I have heard of it at the older levels, but never at the elementary level. He said though if Jordan fights me just to call him and he’ll bring the officer over. I don’t want to do it. Hopefully Jordan will keep getting up. Otherwise, I’m going to lose all of my hair from pulling it out.

Surely he was just joshing, right? I think it rocks though, what an awesome principle!

Heather, you need find ways to make you feel normal. I know it seems impossible and I cannot even imagine the stress you’re in, I really can’t, but a couple times a week, find something to do that seems normal to take your mind off the rest. It might be a walk, or a cup of cocoa, or going to the grocery store on the weekend when they have all the samples out! Things that you like and might relax you for just a few moments. And be in the moment lol use those moments to let your mind empty, or for that matter, if you meditate, that would be so awesome for you, too. It will do wonders for your state of mind and ability to handle the stress and that transfers to everything.

You can’t take care of anyone if you ahven’t taken care of yourself =)

Lynn, I am trying. the hard part is getting away from my kids. They are with me 24/7 and are fighting 24/7. If they are not fighting, they are loud. Getting along but loud. 7 kids at full volume is enough to drive anyone nuts. If Pato had more time off it would be soo much easier.

And the principal wasn’t joking. He really will bring the school resource officer to pick them up if they fight their parents every day. Jordan doesn’t think he needs that. Lol neither do I. It was a good threat.

((((hugs)))) sweetie, I wish I could help!

That’s awesome, it really is, we need that happening at schools all over America. America’s kids need that happening, what an awesome principle =)

I wish you were here too. I think we’d get along fabulously and my kids would be over to see the birds every day. Lol ;)
