My Kids Would Miss….

Posted by Heather Manning On February - 28 - 2011

If you were abducted and taken to Mars, what is it about you that your kids would miss the most?  I can pretty much guarantee it wouldn’t be my cooking!  It probably wouldn’t be the repeated requests to clean up their rooms and help with their chores.  And they definitely wouldn’t mind not brushing their teeth.  They would still fight over who has to feed the birds that night and I’m not sure who would pick up and feed Junie.  I think they think her food magically appears.

I would hope it would be the hugs and kisses and all of the love they get from their mama.  The look of pride on my face when they have accomplished something.  The cheers they get from me (they are always louder then everyone else) when I am rooting them on.

The smile I give them when they look at me with a look in their eyes that tells me they need reassurance.

Me asking them every morning, “Did you have a good sleep?”

I’m pretty sure that they would miss all of that in the event I was taken to Mars.

Eventually.

I honestly think they would miss those things the most.  Plus, they would probably miss these things.

Christiano would miss my lap that he climbs up in and snuggles against my shoulder when he’s upset.

I think they all would miss the moments when I am feeling goofy and break out into an old “running man” dance in the middle of the kitchen.

or when I suddenly break out into song and they look at each other and start to laugh, but then they join in.

I would hope they’d miss the stories I read to them.

And the fact that I read just one more before it’s time to go to bed.

I know those things would be the things I miss about them if I were taken to Mars.  Their smile, their laughter, the bear hugs, and the slobbery kisses.  I don’t think my life could be complete without them.

So, if you were taken to Mars, what is it that your kids would miss about you?  Would it be the same as mine?  What would you add to it?  I’m going to ask mine when they get from school and up from nap.  I think this is a really neat conversation to have with them.

Oh murphy murphy murphy

Posted by Heather Manning On February - 26 - 2011

will you please go away?

I know, you have the whole law thing to push, but I think you’ve been hanging out around me for long enough.

I haven’t posted yet about the tax refund.

Our tax preparer left the final number off of our account number. The bank rejected it since it didn’t match any account numbers.

We’re waiting on a paper check.

Everyone was throwing up here for a few days.

I mean everyone.

Except Shelley and Christiano.

The rest of us?

One bathroom was not enough.

In the meantime, my sons had their 2nd and 12th birthday last Wednesday and notice I didn’t get to post?  Yep, we were all feeling like doggy doo doo.

Happy birthday Jordan and Nano!

Yesterday I went to pick up my mail and looked down at my license and realized it was expired.  December 15, 2010.

Oops.

I panicked.

Thought, I haven’t been pulled over in 10 years, today would be the day it will happen.

Turns out you have 30 days before and 60 days after your license expires to renew it.  I was only 10 days late.  Thank God.  I was too close to having to take the written AND driving exams all over again.  I didn’t pass the written one easily the first time I took it.  At 15.  It took me 5 times.

That was with halfway studying.

Gave him my brother’s address because I can’t use my old address.  The DoT won’t deliver your new license if your mail is on hold.  They deliver your license now?  We don’t pick it up at the same time?  Got my pretty new paper temporary license, went out, called my SIL, and guess what?  I transposed the last 2 digits of the address.  Guess it’s not just the tax preparer screwing up lately, huh?  Lucky for me, they laughed when I went back in and redid the whole thing again.

Now the address is right.

I promised I wouldn’t come back in until I had a place of my own to change my address to.

Now I want to get one of those new rfid blocking wallet to put my new id into.  Have you heard about that?  The chip can transmit your info via radio waves allowing people to electronically pick pocket you.  Freaking crazy!

The mobile home we are looking at has quite a few little things that need fixed.  The big thing, the guy said he agreed was a safety problem and he would fix it. (Something with the circuit box.)  Then he told us he is taking the fridge with him.  Who does that?  Takes the fridge.

All we are waiting on is the money to pay him.  If Carlos cosigns though we don’t have to wait on the paper check, but there is one house I want to look at first if we are going through the bank.  if I can get a house with a basement in tornado ally, I’d rather do that, you know?

Ok, I’m off for a bit.

The stress is starting to get to me from all this.

Nano was crying to go home the other night.

we are home honey.

At least for the time being.

Have a great day.

Tonight’s Supper

Posted by Heather Manning On February - 21 - 2011

I had another post planned for today, I should have typed it out last night and scheduled it, but I didn’t and life got away from me today.  Signed Alyce up for preschool, grocery store, Jordan had chess club, Kat was home sick, all 7 of the kids were in great form tonight fighting, whining, crying, ticking each other off. <sigh> Very long day.  None of us had a minute to sit and just think until after they went to bed.

Now, these pictures are of the food before we cooked it.  Unfortunately, it was devoured before I thought to take an after picture.  It was a crazy day I tell you.  I just wanted to dish out the supper and have them eat and go to bed.  Please go to bed.

We wanted something different tonight.  (Shelley and I)  We googled steak recipes because we wanted meat, but not the same old same old.

We improvised with these:

Braciole and Creamy Twice Baked Potatoes

I won’t repost the recipes since they are all written out there, I will say we used a different steak than they suggested and now I don’t remember what it was.  I’m sure what they suggest is good, but ours was really really thick and 1 would probably have 3 adult servings.  Huge.  We tripled the recipes since we are feeding 11 here.  I sliced the steak down the middle and then pounded them down to a little thicker than 1/2 inch because I got tired of pounding.

With the Braciole on top of what they suggested, I also added Italian Seasoning, Basil, and Rosemary.

Just sprinkled it right in the bowl with everything else.  With tripling it, I added 2 containers of grated Romano cheese.  I’m glad I did because we used every last drop of filling.  This is sad, but I’ve never used fresh parsley before in cooking.  I have never really used parsley.  I always thought it was for decoration. (That’s mom’s fault. You know, you’re little and you’re at a restaurant and you see something green on your plate, you’re all ewwww!  Mom says, just sit it to the side, it’s for decoration.  Nu – uh, that’s a tree in my food.) :)   I’ll tell you, when it’s all chopped up finely in the food processor, it smells like wet grass.  I was nervous about using it after I smelled it.  I’m a chicken.  Here’s what the steak looked like before we stuck it in the oven.

meat

We cooked it at the same temp but ended up having to cook it for almost 40 minutes before it hit the 160 degree mark.  The recipe says 130, but our meat thermometer says 160 for beef and it was still really red on the inside when we checked it at 130 degrees.  Better to be safe than sorry.  It was really dark on the outside but so moist on the inside when we pulled it out.  I was in charge of the steak and if I do say so myself, I think that was the best thing I have EVER made in my life.

Shelley was in charge of the Twice Baked Potatoes.

potatoesCell phone pics.  Sorry!  I’m on the laptop still without my Paintshop Pro to fix the color.

We followed their recipe to start out with then added Italian Seasoning, Basil, more salt and pepper, chives, and of course added chedder cheese on top because we are cheese lovers around here.

Best twice baked potatoes ever.  Smooth, creamy, so yummy!  I’d never had them with cream cheese before and that was the perfect addition!

Now I need to find something different to make for tomorrow.  How do you top the best meal you’ve ever made?  I don’t know but I’m feeling the pressure.  Josh said Pato and I should open a Mexican steakhouse after he ate that.

Tomorrow I’ll get a post up about the mobile home and our tax drama.  (You can imagine how that is going to go when I tell you our tax preparer left the last digit off of our bank account number.  I’m hoping the story will have a happy ending after Pato goes to the bank in the morning.

Have a great night!

Oh No She Did Not

Posted by Heather Manning On February - 20 - 2011

Oh yes she did.

Pato gave me a gift card for Valentine’s Day to go get a massage.  I thought massages only last forever but that last piercing that I want will literally (should) last forever.  I felt a bit of guilt when I was making plans.  I thought I should go get a pair of decent dress shoes.  I’ve been wearing my boots, this one pair of clunky brown shoes that I love, and my Ryns that were up off the floor in my apartment in my room.  I got them out the first day, before they popped a hole in my bedroom ceiling and soaked everything in there.  We went to Kohl’s afterwards though and I found a really cute pair of Mudd heels on clearance for $14, so now I have a pair of dress shoes too.  It’s this pair.  Are those not super cute? Marked down from $49.99.  Love them!  Pato told me he bought me that gift card for me for Valentine’s Day to do something that would destress me because I’ve been so stressed.  He said if this would help than go ahead and use it for that.  He wanted me to do something that would make me happy.

Back to what I did.  Though I was feeling guilty I went ahead and went to the piercer.  I went to Expo here in Des Moines.  I think it was the same guy who did my nose 6 years ago.  Best piercer I have ever dealt with.  (I’ve had a lot of piercings, besides my nose and my monroe, I’ve had my belly button done twice and I have 7 holes going all the way up in my left ear and 4 in my right.  The ears I had done before I was 18, back when Claire’s would pierce cartilidge with an ear piercing gun – not recommended.  That hurts worse than a needle.  It was also before you had to be id’d for a piercing.  I got grounded like 2 weeks for disobeying and 1 week for each additional hole that I wasn’t born with and didn’t have permission to put in.  I didn’t get those last 7 done all at once either.  I was grounded a lot.  The first hole and my double holes my grandma was with me when I got them done.  I had permission.)

You’re waiting to see what I had done aren’t you?  For those of you who are into body piercing, you’ll know exactly what I’m talking about when I say microdermal anchors.

More or less what it is is a flat piece of titanium with holes in it. They punch a hole in the skin, slide the anchor in, I think between the layers of the skin – I thought it went under the skin, but my piercer said the pain comes in when he pushes the plate in between the layers of skin.  Then they twist the gem on, and voila you are done.  So where is mine?

new piercingI got a tear drop.  Well, it’s not a tear drop yet.  That’s the one I picked out for healing purposes.  Just like with my monroe, you can’t have too small of a gem on it or when it swells, it will swell up and around it.  I’m going to switch it out to one that is as small as my monroe piercing after it heals.  I am wondering how long this takes to heal compared to a surface piercing.  The plate has holes in it so that the skin can grow up through it and that is what anchors it in place.  I watched one on YouTube this morning and I’m glad I didn’t watch it before I did it.  I would have totally chickened out.  Pato and my SIL, Shelley were looking up Microdermal Snags and they wanted me to look at it AFTER the fact. I refused to look.  I shouldn’t snag it on anything, it’s on my face. I hope.

My sister said, um…no offense, but how old are you going to be this year? 37.  Why? :)   I figure by the time I’m in a nursing home all my fellow residents will have something pierced or tattooed or something.  Right?

Pain wise?  It was comparable to my Monroe.  I honestly don’t remember how bad my nose was.  I swear the nose didn’t hurt too much until after the fact.  The Monroe hurt.

The microdermal – how he described it before we did it was burning, then pain, then some pinching.  That’s exactly what it was.  The pain part made me move my feet a tad to keep from moving my face but it wasn’t unbearable say compared to oh, giving birth to 4 kids.  I will say after the fact that it doesn’t hurt nearly as much now as my other 2 facials did.  It honestly doesn’t hurt at all until I go to do the aftercare.  That hurts worse than the other 2.  You obviously can’t twist this.  You massage it instead.  Pressing down on it hurts.  But, that’s how you get gunk out of it.  I need to start taking zinc again.  The guy who pierced my belly button told me that zinc is the best thing to take after a piercing because it promotes healing.

So, that was my fun adventure yesterday.  I was going to say this is my last facial, but I’m sitting here looking at the picture and I’d kind of like another small one right behind it up by the corner of my eye. shhhh!  Don’t tell my mom.  She thinks I’m going through a midlife crisis. Body piercers and tattoo people, you know how addicting it is.  It’s like Lays, you can’t just have one. :)

I’ll do another post in a bit about the mobile home and how that went yesterday but it sounds like we are getting it.  Yippie!

Have a great day!

Is It Too Soon To Pick Out Paint?

Posted by Heather Manning On February - 17 - 2011

We finally got into the manufactured home yesterday to look at it.  (I was informed that they are not called mobile homes anymore.)  It is HUGE.  When you walk in and go to the right there is a big bedroom, another big bedroom, one of the bathrooms, and then the master bedroom.  Both of the bedrooms are big enough my kids can share and not fall all over each other.  Room for all of their dressers, desks, beds, etc.  In the master bedroom there are 2 huge closets, which is awesome because Pato is a clothes hog and only gave me about 1/4 of our old closet.  (I know, so wrong!)  The bath off the master bedroom has a corner Jacuzzi tub and a stand up shower.  Loved it!

go back out and that’s the living room which I think I will actually turn into my office/room for the birds’ cages, Nano’s train table (someone on ReUseIt offered him a train table since his was destroyed by the water), the girls’ kitchen (which I am hoping I can get the smell out of – it’s their favorite toy), and I want to put a couple of bookshelves in there instead of stacking my books on my desk.  Then you go to the left and there is the dining room – to the left of that is a family room with a fire place, and then off the dining room is a huge kitchen with an island, sky lights, all the appliances I need – dishwasher, fridge, gas stove (which I’m finally getting used to after living at my brother’s for 3 weeks), and a garbage disposal, which I’ve missed so much since my apartment building burned down.

Off the kitchen is a laundry room….woot woot!  Finally somewhere to put my washer/dryer other than in the garage!  I’m hoping it still works.  I only used them for a year and a half before we had to store them away for 6 years.  They will still work right.  Off the other side of the kitchen was a storage area.

Outside there’s a huge wooden porch which needs painted, but I’m good with that.

In the back there’s a shed that is almost big enough to park Pato’s grand prix in.  He needs that for his tools, the kids’ bikes,  the stroller, etc.

Here I was seeing all the fun features, how much space there was, etc.  Pato is all, this needs fixed, this needs fixed, this needs fixed.  The court manager said he thought we could get the guy to go down to $50,000 with the repairs that need made.  Pato is hoping that taking my dad on Saturday and having him look around, estimate what needs done, etc will help have the guy lower more.  He is having my dad sit in on the negotiations.

I’m not allowed to go.  I’ll smile and say, you want $53?  We’ll take it!  I have no poker face when I want something.

The kids have already planned their rooms.  Jordan wants 2 walls to be army green and the other 2 to be camo.  Then he wants me to paint his loft bed black.

The girls’ want aqua walls with clouds on top and a grass/flower scene on the bottom.  :)   If we do that we’ll have to call in Aunt Shelley who is much better at that stuff than I am.

Pato wants to pull up the carpet in the living room, dining room, family room and put down wood laminate.  (See, I’m not the only one dreaming.)

I want the living room/family room to be a deep red.  I want the kitchen to be a lemony- soft yellow, not too bright, not off white.  I want white accents and white soft eyelet like curtains to make it bright and sunshiny in there.

We haven’t even signed the contract and I’ve already got it picked out.  I want to go to Home Depot and look at paint palettes.  We should sign the contract first right?

Wish us luck!!!

Have a great day!

How Do You Share Happiness?

Posted by Heather Manning On February - 16 - 2011

It’s been hard for me the last couple of weeks to put on a smile and be happy and make everyone around me happy.  The whole apartment burning down thing kind of cramps your ability to put on a happy smile but I’ve been trying.  You can’t stay depressed forever and life has to go on even during tragedies.  So many people have given me happiness during this time, I have to pay it forward somehow.

I love doing things for other people, not just after people have done things for me.  For Valentine’s Day I took a cake that I had made up to my husband’s work.  My SIL and I took one over to my brother’s work.  I love making things like that and sending them off to friends and family without them know.

I rescued some of my beads from the garage and the last few days I’ve been making bracelets for family members.  They aren’t anything huge or beautiful, I’m not the best jewelry maker, but it always puts a smile on the face of the receiver.  I made matching ones for Katiana and one of her best friends and that put a smile on her friend’s face too.

Sometimes it’s something completely intangible.  I call my siblings or friends out of nowhere just to tell them I love them.

I smile at people as I pass them on the street.  I read a dear Abby column where someone had gotten rude responses when she offered a smile and like Abby said a smile is contagious, pass it on and it will make someone else smile too.

Today at the grocery store I saw a business woman fall down in the entrance.  I rushed in and you could tell she was mad.  She had already gotten up and was brushing herself up.  I walked up and said, are you ok?  She turned and told me how mad she was, her nylons were muddy and torn.  There had been an empoyee standing in the entrance and he had said nothing.  I just stood there and commiserated with her about how much it stinks to be a woman in heels on a foggy icy morning in Iowa.  The weather didn’t match heels and light colored clothes.  We talked a bit and I told her even with a little mud she still looked beautiful.  When we parted ways, she was smiling and laughing and it made me feel good to help a complete stranger feel better.  I think she was happier too and had a better outlook on her day.

Just the little things.  It’s not what you buy, it’s what you do.  You can help anyone by just giving them a small present you made, a kind word, a smile, there are so many ways.  Think of the ways people have made you smile and feel a little happier.

Some Hopeful News

Posted by Heather Manning On February - 13 - 2011

We went out and looked at mobile homes yesterday.  I was feeling depressed because even though the hours said they were opened and I had called and said we were coming, the office wasn’t open.  We found 3 that would work for our family and I left a message that we were wondering if any of those would go on contract.  We also looked in another town that I don’t want to live in.  Not that there is anything wrong with Grimes, but I want to keep the kids in our district.

Plus, Grimes said on their paper only 2 pets allowed if that includes birds, we’re over the limit.  If it only counts cats and dogs, we are good.

I was depressed though because we made no progress.

This morning the owner of the one in our town called me and said that he thinks one of the doubles could go on contract.  He said the singles even have more square feet than my apartment did.  (My apartment was almost 1000, the singles are 1216.)  I’d like more than that still though.  The payment between lot rent and the mobile home would be more than what we were paying but I told Pato I would pay the water bill.  He’s not used to paying that.   In our apartment, water and sewage and garbage were paid for.

I’ll tell you if I’m paying the water bill I’ll turn in to my brother singing, 1000, 2000, 3000 gallons of water gone.

I’m the same way with the cell phone bill and Pato calling Mexico.  I check every penny.

He told me to call him on Wednesday (that’s Pato’s day off).  He’ll talk to the owners and we can come out and see it if they are willing.  Keep your fingers crossed.  If all else fails there’s a single that will definitely go on contract.  Not what we want, but a stepping stone.  Honestly, a mobile home isn’t what we wanted period, I like a basement for tornados, but desperate times and all.

Keep your fingers crossed, say a prayer, anything.

I would love to be in our new place before the boys’ birthdays on Feb 23.  I don’t want to have to do their celebration here at my brother’s.  Not that we haven’t had a thousand parties here with our family, but I just want my own space.

I was planning on their birthday party at a pizza place here but right now I just can’t justify putting out the money on it.  I feel bad.

I did order Jordan’s birthday presents.  He wanted a Kindle .  When your almost 12 year asks for an ereader over video games, you jump.  I had money in my cafe press account too from things I have sold and I got him a shirt that says you don’t scare me, I’m a goalie.

We are getting Nano a MobiGo and a Vtech Kidizoom Camera if I can find a good deal on that like I did Alyce’s at Christmas time.  It’s listed at $60 at Amazon, but I got hers for $19.99 at WalMart over Christmas.  Those are Leecy’s 2 toys that Nano takes off with all the time.  Otherwise it’ll be more Thomas the Train.  He loves his trains.

Have a great day!

It’s Hard To Find Something To Write About

Posted by Heather Manning On February - 12 - 2011

right now.

Between the kids fighting, Nano is cranky because he still isn’t feeling 100%, not having our own place yet……it’s hard to write.  I don’t want to write a negative post all the time.  I don’t mind venting when something bad is going on, but to vent for 2 weeks straight would not be cool.  How many times do you want to hear about Nano not letting me put him down?  Or about Jordan and Kat fighting.  Or about my headache that won’t go away.  I want something happy.

Hopefully today will be the turning point.  We didn’t get to go look at mobile homes yesterday because Pato had to be at work at 3 and he got back from getting the furniture right before he had to leave.  The one I saw that looked like it would fit us didn’t look that…as my ex-husband would say – woopie woopie, but beggar’s can’t be choosers right?  If it fits us we can always fix it up.

My brother is trying to decide if he is going to take the counter offer on  a house that he wants to buy.  If he does the closing date would be March 29.  Not that I was planning on staying here that long.  :)

I posted an ad on Craig’s list looking for a mobile home in my kids’ district, but no responses yet.  Of course, I posted it later last night.  One can always hope.

Mom, I may have to move in with you and dad.

That would not make Pato happy.  He loves my parents, but that’s another half an hour added to his half an hour drive already.  Yeah, he’d be thriled.  He’d probably end up staying at his friends’ houses.

Crud, I wasn’t going to be negative.

K – I don’t need any more clothes donations for the kids.  Lynn graciously brought me a box of clothes for Nano the other day.  I appreciate it so much!  So does Nano.  He was digging through the pajamas as soon as you left and took about 30 minutes to settle on which pair he wanted to wear.  He decided on Diego……which was his first choice, but he had to go through all of them anyway.  I kept asking you said Diego?  you want Diego right?  No. Pulled out another pair.  Yook mama!  Yes honey, camo!  Do you want to wear that?  no.  Pulled out another pair…and so on until he said, I wear Diego.

Thank you!

I think I shall go get Pato out of bed so we can get going.  Maybe I should do something with my hair first.  It’s kind of scary.  Slept on it wet.  I think I jumped in the shower at 2 in the morning after we watched Paranormal Activity 2. My SIL hung a severed head on the shower head while I took Junie out to pee.   I was almost expecting something like that so I sat it on the toilet for my brother in the morning and hopped in the shower.  I just about screamed when I got out of the shower, forgetting the severed head was on the toilet.  Nothing like Halloween decorations jumping out at you when it’s 2 and you just watched a freaky movie.  This morning when I got up there was another severed head hanging off the attic handle.

Shelley has a never ending supply of severed heads, fingers, arms, etc.  She loves to decorate for holidays.

Now I am off to get Pato up and do something with my crazy hair.

Have a great day!
