Kids In Class Deserve A Glass – Preschool and Elementary Teachers!

Posted by Heather Manning On January - 20 - 2011

I’m always up to give a teacher a hand so I thought I’d share this giveaway from Silikids.

schoolblast

Preschool and elementary school teachers can go to Silikids Facebook page and write in their Name/School/Teacher for a chance to win each kid in the class a silikids glass.  You can also visit Silikids website for more info on their products and some interesting facts about silicone.

I see on the Facebook page that some are nominating their children’s teachers, I’m not sure if you are able to, but if you can, I’m sure your teacher would love this gift for their class!

This ends on Feb 14, 2011.

FTC (wo)man: I received nothing for this post.  I have never even worked with Silikids.  Like I said, I’m up to give teachers whatever we can so I was happy to post this.

Dear Parent or Guardian

Posted by Heather Manning On January - 20 - 2011

Your child is currently enrolled in an English language development program to help to increase his or her ability to speak, write, and understand English.

Come again?

I got that letter yesterday regarding Katiana.

My child is in English as a second language?

Are you kidding me?

Is she having problems speaking English?  Because if she is, she has her dad fooled since she won’t speak to him in Spanish AT ALL.

Katiana’s self portrait

When the kids start kindergarten I always get a letter that cracks me up.  This is to inform you that your child understands English and doesn’t need special services.

That was really funny with Jordan whose last name has no hint of Hispanic flair to it whatsoever.

Katiana at least has a Hispanic last name via her dad.

But she passed that test with flying colors too.

I would hope so considering English is my first language and her father is fluent in English.  Pato speaks in Spanish at home so the kids will learn it but they only understand it.  They don’t speak it.

I called this lady and left a message:

Hi.  This is Heather….Katiana’s mom.  I’m just wondering why she is enrolled in an English language development program?  Is she having issues with speaking English at school?  She doesn’t have any issues speaking in it at home.  I know I put down on the enrollment papers that English is the first language spoken at home and that Spanish is the second language, but she doesn’t even speak Spanish and she likes to pretend that she doesn’t understand it either if it’s telling her something she doesn’t want to do.

If you could call me back that would be great.

No call.

I called the school and they transferred me to the principal.  He thought the note was in regards to testing her.  Nope, got that one last year in kindergarten.  She passed with flying colors.  He asked me to read the letter to him.  I did.  He is hoping that there wasn’t a mistake and that this letter wasn’t sent out to every child in the district whose parent wrote down that a second language was spoken in the home.  He said he’d be getting a lot of calls if that was the case.

He had no knowledge of Katiana being enrolled in the program.  Nor or Katiana having any issues speaking English.  He would get to the bottom of it.

All I want to know is that my child isn’t having problems in school that I am not aware of.

I’m still waiting on a call back from the woman who sent me the letter.

My in-laws would be happy if Katiana only spoke Spanish.  They are on me all the time to speak Spanish to the kids at home.  I say, sorry.  My first priority is for them to speak English.

But what about when they go visit people in Mexico?

They live in the US.  They go to school in the US.  They will speak English first.

Pato speaks to them in Spanish, they’ll get it eventually.

Besides, how often do we go to Mexico?  The last time I went was when Jordan was 3.  That whole need a passport instead of your birth certificate thing sucks, but I understand it.  And I go off subject again.  It’s what I do.

Before the kids speak Spanish fluently, we have to get a handle on English before they enroll my kids in ESL.

This actually really irritated me.

It wasn’t because, as some people I’ve talked to said, it was racist.  I’m not sure you would color it racism because I wrote down that Spanish is also spoken in our home.  Unless they just put her in this class because of our last name.

It’s because if she truly is enrolled in this class, it’s taking time away from her other things that she could be learning.  Math, science, reading, that stuff.  She understands English, she doesn’t need to take a class in it, wasting time away from her other classes.

Now if they offered Spanish as a second language, I’d be all for that.

Then I wouldn’t have to answer the question, mom, how do you say blue (or insert any other color) in Spanish?

Azul (or insert any other color)

15 times a week.

Have a great day!

Super Bowl XLV: The Ultimate Man Date

Posted by Heather Manning On January - 20 - 2011

How many football fans do I have out here?  Or wives of football fans?  I did not know I was a wife of a football (American, not futbol, I know he loves that) fan until a couple of weeks ago.  He does most of his football watching at work because he is never home.  I caught him watching the Packers game though last Saturday and rooting for them, actually getting excited.  When did you start liking American football?  A long time ago.  Unfortunately he has to work Super Bowl Sunday but I guarantee you he’ll be sitting at the bar (at his work) during the downtime (it’s never busy when the game is on) rooting on whoever he is rooting for.  I might go over to my brother’s, not to watch the game, but to eat the food while my dad and brothers are absorbed in the game.

Ask any football loving fan what their dream date would be and nine times out of 10 he’ll say tickets to the Super Bowl. As my father-in-law always says, “you can’t put a price on a good time,” so if you’re considering biting the bullet and treating your significant other to the ultimate “Man Date,” follow this game plan and you’ll come up a winner:

Super Bowl Tickets – You can reserve seats for the big game on StubHub – Ticket prices start at $2200 all the way up to nearly $400,000 for a coveted spot in the Hall of Fame Suite. If you’ve just won Powerball, then the Super Bowl Hall of Fame option is definitely for you. The best thing about Stub Hub is that fans are constantly buying and selling tickets on the site so you should keep checking back to see what’s available or hedge your bets, and lock in right now!

Flights – While you can always hit the websites for your favorite airlines, my suggestion is to head over to Trip Advisor where you can select whether you’d like to take a non-stop or connecting flight and they arrange everything by price. Plus, there are ratings by customers on which flights they prefer.

Reservations – Head on over to the Arlington, Texas website which has detailed information on hotels in the area. You can aim for the Ritz Carlton, Hilton or a motel (if you’ve blown all your cash on the Super Bowl tix.) Rental Car – If you’re flying into Dallas/Ft. Worth airport, then head on over to

RentalCars.com for a breakdown of all the rental car facilities near the airport. That way, you can choose from a diverse array of options and price points.

Things to Do While in Arlington – If you’re in town for the weekend, visit the NFL Super Bowl website for details about some great charity events taking place throughout the weekend that feature appearances by NFL players. Plus, the City of Arlington’s official website also offers suggestions for attractions and dining options in the area.

Parking Finding parking at a football game is never easy, and the Super Bowl is no different. Luckily, ParkWhiz.com has the scoop on Cowboys Stadium parking with over 40 Super Bowl parking locations for you to choose from. The site is super easy to use, and you can print you parking pass instantly – no worrying if the Postal Service will deliver your ticket on time.

You can even win free parking for the Super Bowl by entering ParkWhiz’s Twitter contest. Follow @ParkWhiz on Twitter, re-tweet this link http://bit.ly/gBPrxv and be entered to win. One winner randomly selected.

So there you have it – treat your significant other to the ultimate “Man Date” and by the time Valentine’s Day hits, you should be on the receiving end of something big and sparkly.

National Coffee Break Day

Posted by Heather Manning On January - 20 - 2011

image002

You know there’s a lot of national days that I think are kind of silly but can we give it up for National Coffee Break Day?  I’m all for that.  Take a break, take a deep breath, and enjoy a nice hot cup of coffee.  (For those of you who like coffee, for my mom we’ll insert tea.)

image001

Today is National Coffee Break Day.  I plan on taking a few coffee breaks.  Ok, so I do it every day but today I will remember that all of you all are taking coffee breaks with me.

There are also activities scheduled all day all over the place, including online.  You can check that here.  When I googled National Coffee Break Day I came up with a list of coffee shops all over the US that are having specials.  Google your area!

image003

Now get that cup of coffee, inhale the aroma, and take a sip with me.

image004

To The FTC (wo)man:  I received nothing for this post.  While I have received a product from Melitta in the past and I do love the company all they provided me with for this post was images and the knowledge that a National Coffee Break Day exists.  In my excitement over an excuse to drink more coffee I had to share that with my readers. We all need a coffee break.  Including you.  Kick back and take a sip!
