Your child is currently enrolled in an English language development program to help to increase his or her ability to speak, write, and understand English.
Come again?
I got that letter yesterday regarding Katiana.
My child is in English as a second language?
Are you kidding me?
Is she having problems speaking English? Because if she is, she has her dad fooled since she won’t speak to him in Spanish AT ALL.
Katiana’s self portrait
When the kids start kindergarten I always get a letter that cracks me up. This is to inform you that your child understands English and doesn’t need special services.
That was really funny with Jordan whose last name has no hint of Hispanic flair to it whatsoever.
Katiana at least has a Hispanic last name via her dad.
But she passed that test with flying colors too.
I would hope so considering English is my first language and her father is fluent in English. Pato speaks in Spanish at home so the kids will learn it but they only understand it. They don’t speak it.
I called this lady and left a message:
Hi. This is Heather….Katiana’s mom. I’m just wondering why she is enrolled in an English language development program? Is she having issues with speaking English at school? She doesn’t have any issues speaking in it at home. I know I put down on the enrollment papers that English is the first language spoken at home and that Spanish is the second language, but she doesn’t even speak Spanish and she likes to pretend that she doesn’t understand it either if it’s telling her something she doesn’t want to do.
If you could call me back that would be great.
No call.
I called the school and they transferred me to the principal. He thought the note was in regards to testing her. Nope, got that one last year in kindergarten. She passed with flying colors. He asked me to read the letter to him. I did. He is hoping that there wasn’t a mistake and that this letter wasn’t sent out to every child in the district whose parent wrote down that a second language was spoken in the home. He said he’d be getting a lot of calls if that was the case.
He had no knowledge of Katiana being enrolled in the program. Nor or Katiana having any issues speaking English. He would get to the bottom of it.
All I want to know is that my child isn’t having problems in school that I am not aware of.
I’m still waiting on a call back from the woman who sent me the letter.
My in-laws would be happy if Katiana only spoke Spanish. They are on me all the time to speak Spanish to the kids at home. I say, sorry. My first priority is for them to speak English.
But what about when they go visit people in Mexico?
They live in the US. They go to school in the US. They will speak English first.
Pato speaks to them in Spanish, they’ll get it eventually.
Besides, how often do we go to Mexico? The last time I went was when Jordan was 3. That whole need a passport instead of your birth certificate thing sucks, but I understand it. And I go off subject again. It’s what I do.
Before the kids speak Spanish fluently, we have to get a handle on English before they enroll my kids in ESL.
This actually really irritated me.
It wasn’t because, as some people I’ve talked to said, it was racist. I’m not sure you would color it racism because I wrote down that Spanish is also spoken in our home. Unless they just put her in this class because of our last name.
It’s because if she truly is enrolled in this class, it’s taking time away from her other things that she could be learning. Math, science, reading, that stuff. She understands English, she doesn’t need to take a class in it, wasting time away from her other classes.
Now if they offered Spanish as a second language, I’d be all for that.
Then I wouldn’t have to answer the question, mom, how do you say blue (or insert any other color) in Spanish?
Azul (or insert any other color)
15 times a week.
Have a great day!
