Since I didn’t blog this weekend (I think that’s becoming a bad habit BTW.), I have a sweet picture of Katiana and Woodstock from the other night. Katiana went to tell Twinkle, who is normally my lovie love bird, to step up because it was time to go back in the cage and go to bed. I guess Twinkle didn’t want to go back in the cage and he nipped Kat’s finger. Not enough to draw blood or break skin, just enough to leave a little red mark. Katiana started crying. I don’t think it hurt her finger that bad, I think it hurt her feelings. Kat can usually do anything she wants with either of the lovebirds, they adore her, and I think it took her by surprise that Twinkle didn’t want her.
Woodstock, who is my feisty little guy, but who adores Katiana and wouldn’t think of nipping at her (the rest of us, yes…Kat, no), was perched on the ceiling fan watching this go down. When Kat sat on the couch crying and holding her finger, he flew down to her.
Not kidding you, he stayed on her head until she calmed down. He’d waddle over to the front of her head so he could peak down over her forehead to see her face. He seemed so concerned.
People know that cats and dogs can read our feelings and they try to be with us when we are upset, but I’m not sure if people who aren’t “bird people” realize that birds do the same thing. When they have bonded with a human like Woodstock has with Katiana, they are protective of them and they can read their moods.
All birds can read your mood. If your tense and angry and just in a crappy mood or if they can feel your scared of them, that’s when they are more likely to bite you. If you go to them with confidence you are more likely to be able to handle that bird. It’s one thing I always tell Jordan when he starts acting scared when Woodstock flies to him. That’s why he bites you. He can feel your scared of him, he thinks he’s in control.
Woody hasn’t bitten me in months and I think it had to do with me getting over my fear of being bitten again after he played vampire bird a few times and got me in the neck. I honestly think it was a change in my demeanor because he didn’t change. He’s still the same bird. He can feel what I’m feeling and he reacts to that.
Anyway, back to the picture, Woodstock and Katiana are best friends. If he could be with her 24/7 he would be one happy bird. He doesn’t like it when Twinkle goes to Katiana – if Woodstock is with her too, he’ll chase Twinkle away. He’s the dominant bird of the two. That might be because he is 7 and Twinkle will just be 1 in April. Lovebirds in captivity usually live 15 – 20 years. That will make Katiana 14 when Woodstock is 15. It’ll be a sad day when he does leave us. I hope he lives a long feisty birdy life. I worry about him though because for the first 7 years he was on an all seed diet – which can cause issues with organs, such as the liver. I’m hoping that now that I have him on a good diet with lots of veggies that any damage that might have been done will be reversed a little.
I wish you guys could see Katiana with Woodstock. It truly amazes me every day. Just because if I tried to do some of the things she does with him, he’d draw blood. He likes me, he tolerates me, but he doesn’t have that bond with me that he does with Kat. She can put her hand right up to him and say step up, he does. She can cup him in the palms of her hands, kiss his beak, hold him like a baby, he loves it all when she does it.
She is really good with animals, but especially with the birds. She says she wants to rescue parrots when she grows up. I think that is fabulous. She won’t make any money doing that, but it’s still fabulous that she wants to help them.
One more picture….. this one is of Junie.
That’s her poncho.
I found a lady (BSN 2007) on Ebay who makes the cutest dresses and ponchos for dogs. (No laughing at me, remember, my dog is a naked dog.) I won 3 dresses and the poncho from her that are under the tree for Christmas. I asked her if she did special orders and she said she would be happy to. Look what she made for Junie:
2 dresses and 2 ponchos. Are those not adorable? I cannot wait to get them! She invoiced me last night and I just paid for them this morning. They should be here in a few days. The other ones got here so quickly. I have to recommend her as an Ebay seller. Fast shipping. Outrageously low prices. Cute cute well made clothes. If you’ve got a dog that you want to keep warm, I think you should check her out. (She’s only got one item listed right now, but keep an eye on it. She is fabulous!) @Kari, these would be so cute for Abby! I think Junie likes the poncho better than her sweaters. It’s not tight on her skin. She likes to be free, free, free!
(Note to the FTC (wo)man, I bought these all myself, she didn’t give me anything for this post. This is just me sharing a fabulous find!)
Have a great day!
