Before I get going on this post, I had to comment on yesterdays. Kelly’s comment reminded me of the most important thing regarding Jordan’s game. It’s not how he played, the most important thing was that after how he was treated, after saying he was never going to play again, he went out there and he did it. He didn’t let the other kid stop him from doing something he loved.
Last night I went in his room while he was doing his homework and I said, I forgot about something yesterday. We talked about the good things you did, we gave you pointers on things to improve on, but I left something out. He sighed and said, what? Something else I did wrong?
I forgot to tell you how proud I was of you for just going. For doing it. For not letting the other kid get you down. I am so proud of you.
Thanks.
In his little – I’m turning into a teenager, my voice is getting a little deeper, tone.
Have I mentioned how much that voice scares me? I don’t want him to grow up. Why can’t they just stay little forever?
That’s a whole other post.
So, what are your kids going to be for Halloween?
We’re going with a football theme this year. It came about because I have problems finding costumes that fit Jordan right. I thought, football player. We can get a Hawks jersey, some football pants, voila! Easy costume and it fits. Then as I was cruising Ebay looking for jerseys, Katiana decided she wanted to be a cheerleader, and I thought it would be fun to outfit the whole family in football stuff.
Jordan’s jersey. It’s too big, but I’m still looking for shoulder pads. Hopefully that will help fill out some of the extra room in it. I also got him a pair of football pants on Ebay. Jordan is my Hawkeye fan, though I swear he only likes the Hawks because I’m a Iowa State Cyclone fan. You know, that whole have to do everything opposite of my uncool mom thing?
Christiano’s – I know it’s not the Hawkeyes, but it’s black and gold. I’m not a Steeler’s fan, actually I’m not a NFL fan at all, so the team didn’t really matter as long as he had the uniform. I like baseball – if we’re going to get technical, I like the Atlanta Braves, and I like soccer. Football has never done it for me.
Alyce’s cheerleading uniform
Katiana’s cheerleading uniform
Alyce’s is a 5-6, if it was a 4, I’m sure it would fit the same way Kat’s does. I just about had a heart attack when Kat put hers on. It’s a medium, supposed to be a 7-8, which it probably is. That being said, you know basketball cheerleading uniforms, how they show the tummy (at least professional ones do)? Yep, that’s what hers does. It shows about 4 inches of skin.
This is a problem because 1 – we live in Iowa. Though it’s been 80 degrees here this past week, there is no guarantee they won’t be wearing snow suits come October 30 (beggars’ night for us – remind me to tell you about a comment I got regarding beggars’ night once). 2 – I don’t let my girls wear clothes that show their stomachs. I’m all for cute. Trying to look provocative and sexy at 6? Not so much.
That being said, I have more costume parts to get. Katiana and Alyce both need white turtleneck shirts and white leggings to wear under their costumes. That would be for warmth and to cover up exposed skin I don’t want Kat showing. I also am still searching for helmets for the boys and shoulder pads for Jordan.
I think I’ll tie a couple of water bottles onto a piece of yarn, throw it around my neck and color myself the water boy.
If I could find a referee costume for me that didn’t make me look like a chubby version of a Playboy wannabe, I’d wear that, but alas, even if I lost 50 lbs miraculously by beggar’s night by taking natural diuretics, I still wouldn’t take my kids out dressed like I was trying out for a bad skin flick.
On to beggars’ night. I guess that is totally not PC. I mentioned that once and someone said, oh that’s real nice. You call it beggars’ night? How tacky is that?
I didn’t know other people didn’t call it that.
Is it just an Iowa thing?
Beggars Night, or more properly Beggars’ Night, is a regional term for the Halloween-related activity that is referred to in most parts of the United States as "Trick or Treat". Specifically, the term is broadly but not exclusively used in Ohio, and in many parts of Iowa, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and western New York.
In general, Beggars Night represents the "treat" portion of Trick or Treat, where children in costume make evening rounds of homes (and to a lesser extent to businesses during the day) and are given candy. This event being closely tied to, but distinct from, Halloween itself, when various forms of mischief (or "tricks") may occur.
The night has often been scheduled by municipal governments on a date prior to the actual Halloween date of October 31.
See, I’m not just being rude. It’s what I’ve been raised to call it my whole life. I’m an Iowan, October 30th is beggars’ night. Unless you live in the town of Jordan’s dad, for some reason, they usually have it on Halloween, which is totally cool with my kids. We go trick or treating in our town on the 30th, than on the 31st head out to his dad’s. Not because we are selfish and want lots of candy but because Jordan’s (dad’s) family loves to see the kids all dressed up. We usually don’t spend a lot of time out there. We just trick or treat where people know him. Usually grandma has theater size boxes of candy for the kids (and me). <3 the Milk Duds. <3 grandma!
You know, it’s really nice when you still get along with your ex-husband and his family. Makes for a peaceful existence when raising your kids. waving at my ex-husband I know you’re reading. (he he he) Much better for the kids in the middle.
My family and I (my brothers, sister in law, sister, etc) are trying to decide what all we are going to this year. I know I want to hit Night Eyes at the zoo. It’s what we do. It’s tradition. Every year since Jordan was a baby.
This merry, not scary, Halloween fundraising festival invites children and adults to dress in their favorite costume and trick or treat through the zoo as it is transformed into a world of lights, castles, storybook characters and fun! Guests will love riding the Train, scooting down Mrs. Clark’s Foods’ Scarecrow Lane, and dancing in the Dahl’s Pumpkin Patch.
I also want to go to Family Halloween night at Living History Farms.
Horse-drawn wagon rides, marshmallow roast, storytellers, scarecrow and jack-o-lantern displays delight all during this non-scary family event. Children aged 12 and under trick or treat through town, and free pop and popcorn for all.
Shelley and I were talking about taking Jordan and Taylor to a haunted house this year. Jordan wanted to go last year. I’m not sure my heart can take it. Last time I went to a haunted house, years ago, in my 20’s, I held up the line because I refused to go any farther. The guy had to take off his mask and shine a flash light for me to start moving again. I was freaked.
And that wasn’t even the scariest haunted house around at the time. I’m sure in 10 years, with advances in technology, things have gotten much scarier.
I’m a chicken, I admit it. I don’t even watch scary movies. (Whatever happened to the classics like Poltergeist?) Well, at least not gory scary movies. I won’t let the kids watch them either. I’m into that “watching all the violence and gore desensitizes children to it IRL” theory. Pato loves scary movies a la Saw. So gross. He sees no problem with Jordan watching things like that. (My friend Diane and I have discussed this and she says that it’s a cultural difference thing. We’re all about psychology and how things affect our kids here, not so much in the small town he is from.) I tell him all the time, garbage in, garbage out. He tells me I’m full of ….well, it’s probably not appropriate to tell you what he says I’m full of, even if it is Spanish.
Have a wonderful day!
