So I am all excited for the My Bird Safe Store order to get here! I had heard so many awesome things about Kathie over there from the other members at Avian Avenue that I had to give it a try.
Right now, my birds get veggies, bird bread, fruits, and various other things I make myself, plus seeds and pellets, but if I’m honest, none of them go for the pellets much. I kept hoping they were getting all of the things that they needed from all of the stuff I put in the bird bread.
Boy are they going to get a variety now!

Kathie is adding some high quality seed to their Bountiful Harvest because both lovebirds and budgies need some seed in their diet. We’ve talked about how an all seed diet is bad for any bird, but there are some birds that need to have a little seed. It’s what they eat in the wild.
Seeds are high in fat and a diet in all seeds can lead to organ failure, including the liver. Plus it can lead to behavioral issues, malnutrition, and even egg laying problems in females which can be life threatening. If you are going to get a bird, please research your birds dietary needs (plus research cages, toys, all that – I have seen so many pictures of parrots that are now at rescues that have health problems, that pluck themselves bare, that have other behavioral issues, NOT because there owners knowingly abused them – though that happens way too much, but because their owner didn’t know that you don’t stick a parrot in the small cage that the pet store tells you is perfect for them without any toys, without any stimulation, without the proper diet. They are sitting in a round small cage with a perch, maybe a swing, and a bowl of seed. If your going to get a parrot, try to replicate their life in the wild as much as possible, provide foraging (you don’t have so spend a lot of money, I use egg cartons, coffee filters, and straws to make foraging things for my little guys), provide a large cage that gives them room to move around, let them out of the cage to fly and get exercise – they are birds, they fly, it’s what they do. It’s been shown that when birds fly even their respiratory system works more effectively.
Now, my budgies WON’T leave their cage. We’ve tried. We’ve left the cage door open for an hour and they won’t even venture out. When we buy a house, I want to have a room for them. A room where I can shut the door and see if they are confident enough to get out of the cage and get exercise. Otherwise, I’m going to get them a way bigger cage. The one they have now is large enough for them to fly in, but I’d like them to have more room.
The lovebirds – they fly all over. Twinkle has never been clipped and she flies like no one’s business. Up, down, all around, she does laps.
Woodstock – He’s not nearly as good of a flier as Twinkle is. He didn’t know HOW to fly when I got him. He walked and hopped everywhere and if he accidently flew somewhere, he’d chirp for me to come get him. Woodstock is a much clumsier flier and doesn’t have nearly the endurance that Twinkle has, (she does laps around our place, many many many laps, Woodstock has to stop, perch, and take off at least once per room) but he flies every where now and he gets down from whereever he puts himself, and I am thrilled for him.

I’ve been meaning to try that for awhile. The lovebirds, I can clean their cage easily because they come out of it. The budgies – not so easy. I spend 20 minutes freaking them out while I have my hand in their cage scrubbing. I’m hoping this will cut off some of the time for that.

Those will probably be too big for the budgies to eat since they are cockatiel sized, but I’m hoping that the lovebirds love them!
Pato’s excited because he’s hoping this will last awhile and because I paid for it. He’s hoping that I won’t be calling him asking him to make a pet store run for awhile to get food.
