Kids’ Lunches

Posted by Heather Manning On September - 22 - 2010

I have limited material this morning.  I was thinking of creating a poll about school lunches or talking about Woodstock’s attack on Jordan.  I figured I’d start with the lunches and end with the bite.

Here’s my poll:

ain’t I fancy?

What do your kids eat for lunch at school?

My kids eat hot lunch a lot, but they’ve been wanting to eat cold lunches too.  I want to send healthy stuff to school with them, but I also don’t want to send the same boring thing day after day.  I’m trying to remember when I took lunch to school, and I just remember it not being exciting – peanut butter and jelly or a thermos full of cream of mushroom soup (which actually was my favorite).  (My mom may come on here and tell me what I had for lunches, I can’t actually remember.  Yes, it was that long ago. :) )I try to change it up for them.

Today I sent turkey/roastbeef/cheese (Jordan gets pepper jack, Kat gets American) sandwiches (Jordan’s on whole wheat pita bread, Kat’s on hoagie bun), apple slices (I threw in raisins with Katiana’s), berry applesauce, cheese nips (crackers) with a few cheese cubes thrown in, and a biscotti that Pato brought home last night thinking it would be something different for their lunches.  Their thermoses are full of water and they each have a crystal lite thing to add to it.  Katiana has raspberry ice and Jordan has the peach green tea for metabolism.

It didn’t sound like too much, until I put it all in their lunch bags and it looks like it is way too much.  Yesterday Katiana told me she didn’t eat her whole sandwich, so I cut the hoagie in half today and sent that instead of a whole one.

I think I might get a container to send salads with Jordan to school.  Mix it up and make different kinds of salads.  He loves them, so that would be another healthy option.

Give me some ideas.  What do you send with your kids?

On to the bird bite….

Woodstock (our rescued lovebird) just got Jordan last night. He stays away from Woodstock since we first got him and Woodstock bit him.

I watched the whole thing play out.

Woodstock was on the ceiling fan, Jordan was standing on a chair getting something out of the cupboard. Jordan said, mom, Woodstock looks like he is going to fly at me and he looks mean. I said, stay calm, get down slowly, don’t show him you’re nervous.

He got down too slowly.

First he got his ear, then Jordan started yelling at me to get him off, get him off. Woodstock stuck his head down Jordan’s shirt and started biting. I got Woodstock off and then it took Katiana and I 20 minutes to get him back in his cage.  If Jordan had been able to stay calm, it would have ended with the ear most likely (I know it’s hard when you have a lovebird trying to pierce your cartilage).  You have to let the bird know psychologically that you are in control, not them.  When Jordan started screaming, Woodstock thought he was in control.  It’s why when I wrap my neck in a scarf Woodstock doesn’t bite me, I’m not nervous at all.  When my neck is unwrapped, because of the 2 bites I’ve gotten, I’m nervous, in my head saying, don’t bite me, don’t bite me, don’t bite me.  Without fail, he bites me every time then.

I don’t get it. Jordan was doing nothing, and he didn’t get scared until he saw Woodstock in position to aim for him. Woodstock never flies to Jordan, it’s always Katiana or me. Jordan wasn’t even by Woodstock’s favorite cupboard. It was one across the room.  I get in the cupboards all the time and Woodstock has never attacked me.  But I’m female.  My sister in law said that Woodstock seemed to really like my niece and hate my brother when they kept them while we were on vacation. I really think it’s a male/female thing with him.

Jordan wasn’t so much scared of Woodstock before so much as just stayed out of his way. He does fine with Twinkle and the budgies. There was just something about Woodstock’s stance that made him think Woodstock was going to attack him.

I have got to find away to work with Woodstock on his biting.  Usually it is just me that he bites when I ask him to step up.  I have noticed that Woodstock doesn’t really like Jordan.  It’s probably because he has always been with females and now doesn’t like males because he doesn’t pay any attention to Pato either.  I think Woodstock thought that Jordan was in his territory and he had to defend it.

One of the guys on the bird board that I am on suggested instead of moving slowly that when Woodstock gives that body language that he did last night to wait until the last moment, duck and move.  He said most of the time it works, but sometimes the bird will get a bite in.

I also talked to someone at a parrot rescue and he said that he would put Woodstock back in a quiet room and only let Katiana handle him.  That would work except lovebirds aren’t good by themselves.  I’m worried I’ll have a depressed lovebird that plucks himself bare then. :(

I think what I’m going to have to do is only let Woodstock out when Katiana is home and then Jordan needs to stay out of areas that Woodstock considers his territory.  (His cage, the cupboards, the ceiling fan – not that Jordan is ever on the ceiling fan.)  I don’t want to give up on him.  The poor bird has been passed around, not having a stable home, and he’s only been with us 2 months.  In bird time that’s like he just got here yesterday.

I also am going to buy a play gym for the lovebirds.  Pato keeps saying he is going to make one and hasn’t.  If they have a place to perch that is full of fun things to do, maybe Woodstock will consider that his territory instead of my kitchen.

If you have birds and have some thoughts on how to help Woodstock with this, let me know please.

Have a great day!

My son takes a lunch to school every day. I keep it pretty simple and pack his lunchbox with sandwiches and sometimes if we have leftovers from the night before – pizza. I also throw in some of his favorites like apples or grapes, crackers or baked chips and yogurt or pudding.
Poor Jordan! I hope he is doing okay now. We don’t have any birds so I can’t really offer any suggestions in that department.
