What Would You Do To Survive?

Posted by Heather Manning On June - 22 - 2010

I am dragging today.  I had all 4 kids in bed at 9 last night. (You might think shouldn’t they always be in bed by nine?  They should be, but they fight me so they can see Pato when he gets home.  I let it slide during the summertime because with his hours they don’t get a lot of time with him.)  The night before they had stayed up until 2 with him and I had one heck of a day with them yesterday because of it.  Amidst all the pleading and begging and whining, I managed to get them to sleep.

I had every intention of going to bed early last night (early for me being midnight) but Pato brought home a Redbox movie that I got engrossed in.

Have you seen

Thirst

Thirst

It has Lacey Chabert in it.  Remember the littlest one in Party of Five?

I rarely watch movies when he pops them in late.  Pato’s into either shoot ‘em up or the kind of scary that’s so gross you want to puke movies.  I like dramas and comedies.  I’m listening with one ear and started getting into this one.  I got grossed out a few times.  I told Pato I would never ever drink blood from a snake or my own pee.  He said if you were in the desert lost, you would to survive.  I said, no, because I would never be in that situation to begin with.  Oh yeah, you’re perfect, you’d never get lost in a desert.

It’s not that.  I’ve never even been to a desert. (I’m not the most adventuresome type of person you’ll meet.  I don’t do bugs, I don’t like heat, I hate to get dirty, I don’t sleep outdoors – see that whole I hate bugs thing, I’m so not an outdoorsman.) If I was going to get lost and die from the elements, it would be in a snow storm, because my car broke down, not because I went out to play in the snow.  I live in Iowa.  No deserts.  We probably drove through some desert when we drove to Mexico, but that was such a long drive (from Ohio to Texas) and I was so horribly bored that I possibly repressed it.  That or I’m just getting old and losing my memory.  Either way, we stayed on interstates the whole way through.  It’s true, driving through Texas takes FOREVER!

I learned 2 valuable lessons that trip.

1 – Never drive from Ohio to Texas and then take a bus from Reynosa, Mexico to Leon, Mexico with a 3 year old who has a broken wrist.  No fun.  Actually, Jordan was fine, the ride just stunk.

2 – Give myself more time in between flights on the way home.  Nothing like getting all your luggage off a plane at O’Hare to go through customs, then attempting to wrangle 2 weeks worth of luggage and presents and a 3 year old by yourself with barely enough time to catch your connecting flight to Columbus, Oh.  I had the luggage on the luggage cart and Jordan on top of that, holding on to him as I ran.

Wondering why we drove down and Jordan and I flew back?  We were taking a truck down to Pato’s father as a present.  We had to leave it at the border for inspection and to be licensed for Mexico.  Pato and his took a bus up a few days later to bring the truck to where they lived.

Pato knows I love the old VW bugs.  He keeps saying next time we go to Mexico that he’s going to buy me one, then I can drive it back up to home.  He’s so funny if he thinks I’m going to make that drive again.  Plus, where exactly would I stick 2 – 5 point harness car seats, a booster, and an 11 year old in a bug.

Could you see me trying to stick all 4 of my kids in this -

Oh but it’s cute.  I want an old one.  The new ones are cute too, but the old bugs are classic!  Some people lust after corvettes and mustangs, not I.  I want a bug.

Back to the movie, I was listening with one ear and the I gradually started watching more and more of it.  It was disturbing in an exactly what would you do to survive this situation?

The movie kept me up until 2:10 AM.

And since the kids got to bed at a decent time last night, they were all up at 8:30 AM.  Yippie me!  The birds were up too.  Waiting for their bread.  Not so patiently.  Tweet tweet tweet SQUAWK!

I’m counting down the minutes until naptime.

I don’t know why I’m so tired.  I’m normally go to bed between 1 and 2 and get up at 7:30.  Sleeping until 8:30 was sleeping in.  I’ll chalk it up to mother nature.

Alright, I need to go do dishes that I didn’t do after the kids went to bed because I reviewed Imaginary Jesus and then got caught up in the movie.  Need to get those done and then make lunch.  After that, I’m hoping to God the littlest 2 are ready for a nap!

Have a great day!
