I Am Hutterite: The Fascinating True Story of a Young Woman’s Journey to Reclaim Her Heritage by Mary-Ann Kirkby

A Fascinating journey into the heart and culture of a reclusive religious community.

I Am Hutterite takes readers into the hidden heart of the little-known Hutterite colony in southern Manitoba where author Mary-Ann Kirkby spent her childhood. When she was ten years old her parents packed up their seven children and a handful of possessions and left the security of the colony to start a new life. Overnight they were thrust into a world they didn’t understand, a world that did not understand them.

Before she left the colony Mary-Ann had never tasted macaroni and cheese or ridden a bike. She had never heard of Walt Disney or rock-and-roll. She was forced to reinvent herself, denying her heritage to fit in with her peers. With great humor, Kirkby describes how she adapted to popular culture; and with raw honesty her family’s deep sense of loss for their community. More than a history lesson, I Am Hutterite is a powerful tale of retracing steps and understanding how our beginnings often define us.

Controversial and acclaimed by the Hutterite community, Kirkby’s book unveils the rich history and traditions of her people, giving us a rare and intimate portrait of an extraordinary way of life.

I have to be honest.  I had never heard of Hutterites before.  I know of Amish and Mennonite communities around me, but just never have had the opportunity to meet someone who is Hutterite.   The religions are very different from what I understand.

I’ve posted before about how I really enjoy learning about different religions and because of that I was excited to read this book.  Mary-Ann Kirkby delivered with this book.  It is excellent in it’s description of the Hutterite community and how they live their lives.  Almost made me wish I could live in a community setting like that.  Almost, I don’t think I could give up my newspapers, magazines, and internet.  While they don’t shun all modern conveniences, they do try to block out influences from the outside world, hence, no radios.  Plus, the problems that her family experienced, I don’t think I could put up with that.  She just made this community fascinating to me.

I really enjoyed reading at her family, I felt so sad for her at certain parts, happy for her at others, and just felt like I went along with her on this ride of finding herself.  I loved the stories, that started with her mother getting ready for her wedding day, through Mary-Ann’s childhood, to her trying to assimilate into an “English” world.

If anything, I would have liked more!  More of everything.  More of her family, more experiences after the Hutterie community.  I just wanted more.  But alas, a book has to come to an end right?  I loved the stories she shared with her readers.

If you’d like to take a peak into the Hutterite lifestyle, read this book, you can also check out the video that is posted on her website.  I’ve watched the whole thing.  It was just as she described in the book, exactly how I visualized it as I was reading along.

ETA – I had to add that Lisa left me a comment about my review and I had to go check out her blog.  I thought, did I not just say I couldn’t give up my internet to be Hutterite?  And Lisa has a blog?  So I headed over there and I love her blog!  Whether you’re Hutterite or not, she has a wonderful well written blog!  You should go check her out.  My whole point of bringing this up is to point out something Lisa has shown me.  Things have changed since Mary-Ann Kirkby and her parents left their Hutterite community.  Some things stay the same, but like all of us, people change with the times.  I noticed that Lisa has beautiful pictures on her blog, when Mary-Ann Kirkby was in her community, photos were frowned upon.  Just another example of things changing that I noticed right away.  I am seriously just fascinated with the Hutterite community, in a good way!  Many of us (at least in the US) live in a place where we don’t even know our neighbors.  I miss that.  Growing up, I would run to the houses on both sides of us, they were like extended family to us.  The Hutterite’s still have that.  We could learn a lesson from them.  I don’t think the world has gotten any better with people becoming more and more estranged from each other.

I love meeting new people.  Have I shared that with you?  Thank you so much Lisa for leaving me a comment so I could find your blog!

Skindinävia

Posted by Heather Manning On May - 14 - 2010

I got to try out Skindinävia’s Summer Moisturizer recently.  Verdict?  Love it!

I have been keeping it in my purse because you know you have to reapply sunscreen throughout the day and this has an SPF of 8 in it.  I love the spray bottle.  I’m horrible about reapplying sunscreen throughout the day because I don’t want to mess up my make up, but I truly do need to use it when I’m outside.  Not just for the anti-wrinkle, don’t want to get skin cancer factors, but because when I was pregnant with Christiano I had a problem with the mask of pregnancy.  I have 2 dark marks above my lip that make it look like I have a mustache.  It’s not hair, I promise.  It’s just where the skin darkened.  With most women this goes away a few months after delivery.  I’m at 15 months past delivery and it hasn’t left yet.  It gets worse in the sun.  The sun darkens it right up, making it even more noticeable.  Being that I have 4 kids, 2 of whom are in soccer, I spend a lot of time outside at soccer practices and at parks with them.  I have to have sunscreen on.  I don’t always remember.

With Skindinävia’s Summer Moisturizer, I put it on under my make up, then before I go outside to a soccer game, I spritz it on again.  If I’m sitting outside at my mom’s, I spritz it on a couple of hours after arriving.  I wasn’t so cautious last year and I spent a lot time finding a concealer that would keep it covered all day.  I still need concealer but it hasn’t darkened up yet this year due to being out in the sun.  So that is awesome.

It is definitely a good moisturizer for me.  I have a problem with dry skin on my face too and no matter what moisturizer I put on, it dries out after a few hours.  Some moisturizers work longer than others for me, and I’m happy when I have when that works for more than 3 hours, but I still need something else.  This helps there too.  When I start feeling dry, I just pull it out of my purse and spray it right on, over my make up.  I haven’t noticed any streaking, smearing, etc of my make up, but I don’t rub at it at all when my make up is on, I just spray it and let it go.  It doesn’t take but a few seconds to absorb.

Let me show you what Skindinävia says about their moisturizer.

Light and hydrating. Breathable mist contains a hygroscopic (water attracting) moisturizer that mimics your own skins hydrating elements. Amazing under makeup and for those with oilier t-zones and shine. Over 60% of users claim it is “The best moisturizer I have ever used.”

  • The world’s lightest moisturizer.
  • Offers a natural, breathable and dewy look, in a lightweight mist.
  • Light mist allows you to apply anywhere, anytime and boasts ingredients that attracts moisture to itself.

I have to show you another product that I am really interested in.  I haven’t tried it, but I want it.

That is Skindinävia’s Original MakeUp Finish.  I really want to try that.  I have a problem with my make up starting to look dry and flaky after – well, not long.  I hate the way my make up sits on my face as I age.  I’ve tried so many different foundations and powders, liquid, powder, mineral, it all does the same thing after a few minutes.

Skindinavia’s Original Makeup Finish is applied over makeup to help keep a freshly applied look for up to 16 hours. Innovative mist hydrates and cools makeup as necessary for a long lasting fresh dewy look. Fewer touch ups and less worry, more quality time and a boost in confidence in your makeup.

  • Flawless set, hold, and blending
  • Greatly extends makeup wear and color hold
  • Breathable formula
  • Extends makeup wear and quality for hours
  • Resists heat and humidity by cooling makeup surface
  • Oil and paraben free

I want it.  It’s on my must buy list right now.

I wouldn’t mind the 10 Years Younger MakeUp Finish also.

They have lots of other MakeUp Finishes – Cool Flash, No More Shine MakeUp Finish, Bridal MakeUp Finish, & Dance! MakeUp Finish.  Something for all of us!

All in all, I love Skindinävia’s Summer Moisturizer.  I am so glad I got to try it, it filled a hole in my skin care regimen that really needed to be filled.

Thank you so much to Skindinävia for sending me their Summer Moisturizer!  I’ve loved using it and will continue to do so!

What A Stinking Mess

Posted by Heather Manning On May - 14 - 2010

I need to find my old post about my old host and delete it.  Monday morning, the 10th, I went to post a blog post and couldn’t.  I found out that my whole site was down and had been since the 9th.  After doing some investigation, you know, via Twitter, I found out that the whole network was down.  Digiscrapping stores, large and small alike, and other sites that weren’t related to us at all.  On the 10th we finally got this notice-

On 10 May 2010 while investigating issues on the main server that hosts ucwebhost.com it was discovered that there is an exploit opened into the server. Our entire Exceutive Team is working on each of the servers to verify this exploit and resolve it in the timeliest manner possible. Once the issue has been resolved, we will bring the access to the servers back online.
We will update this notice as we continue our investigation and will provide additional details as they are released. If the investigation shows that an exploit has occured, we will notify the FBI; however, at this time we have not found that the exploit has compromised the network.
Regards,
Executive Staff of UCwebhost.com

So we’re all chatting on Facebook and Twitter, wondering what this huge exploit is.  We figure they’ll fix it quickly and we’ll be back online.  Remember this is a company that I have been with for 2 years with every problem fixed immediately.  Customer service couldn’t have been better.  I loved them and sang their praises.  We didn’t get another update until May 12.  May 12.  2 days had passed and the grumblings were being heard.

*** UPDATE ***
We are working very hard to replace the Network system that is causing the outage. This network outage is a result of software exploit at network switch. Once the new cards are installed and software updated, the NOC will be reconnecting the servers. Our hope is to have the servers online later today. Thank you

Then we hear nothing again until yesterday at 4.  At that point I had bought new web hosting and we were just waiting for my site to come back online so they could start transferring over.  This was the last update we got –

As of 4:00 PM EST today, Impact Hosting LLC has acquired UC Webhost. The former owner is not longer able to continue providing services, however due to the change of ownership, normal daily operations and hosting services will be restored within coming hours.
Our company entered into accelerated negotiations earlier today so our involvement with UCWebhost spans only a few hours. We were not involved with UCWebhost in the events leading up to the current outage however we fully intend on resolving all current issues and are committed to bringing your websites back online as soon as possible.
We appreciate your patience over the next few hours while everything is brought back online, restored, and is and fully operational.
Rest assured that once your account is back online and loading properly there will be no risk of your websites or servers being down again or offline
in the foreseeable future. We’re strongly committed to the security of your data, the uptime of your websites, and the peace of mind that results from a service provider you can count on.
We will update the Twitter feed – http://twitter.com/ucwebhost – and provide you with additional information (as well as via e-mail) as soon as it is available.
Everyone in our Impact Hosting LLC family is excited about working with you!

Security exploit my butt.  You all didn’t pay your bill did you?  Got shut down I believe.  Now, the best part is, look at the reviews for the new hosting company.  I am so glad I had my new hosting ready to go when the network came back online.

They weren’t done with the fun and games.  I can kind of understand not wanting to overload the server, but they shut off transfers out of the Cpanel and back ups.  My new host was busting their tooshes trying to transfer my site over manually at less than 100kbs/second.  I have a 12 gb site all on my own.  I keep saying I am going to bake my new host chocolate chip cookies and send them to their office.

We’re all feeling like this smells funny.  The new host is based out of Ohio.  The president of the old company, from Ohio.  Everyone who is doing our support tickets?  The same people who worked for UCWebhost.  That’s plausible, sometimes companies allow the employees to stay on when they are bought out.  But the reviews?  Exactly what we’ve been going through the last few days.

I had a response to one of my support emails finally, telling me they want to retain me as a customer. I said, not in a million years.  Google your company, it’s not pretty.

Then a phone call last night, which I didn’t answer because I don’t answer private numbers.  Unknown yes.  Private, no.  That means they are hiding the number by pressing *69 or unlisted.  I don’t do hidden numbers.  A message requesting that I call them back to discuss staying because I’ve been a good customer for a long time.  Again, I don’t play with companies who have that track record.  No way.  I have worked too hard to build my own business and to build my reputation.  It could have been shot in just a few days. Speaking of my business, I’ll put this up in the store, but don’t buy any of my products yet, they are still transferring my download folder.

I have to give much love to my new host, HostDuplex, who has been working around the clock to get my site back up and running.  Bet they never thought I’d be this much work when they message me on Twitter when I said I needed a new host.  Know what tipped my hat in their direction?  They have lots of University of Iowa grads working for them.  I say if I can’t trust a fellow Iowan, who can I trust?  :)   They are just a tad more expensive than the cheapo hosts, but after what I’ve been through, I’m good with that.  First I had gotten the economy plan for $7/month.  I couldn’t see my storage and bandwidth because my site was down.  Turns out I have 12 GBs of stuff.  So, I moved up to the business plan at $10/month, which is like 2 dollars more for 3 months than I was paying at UCWebhost.  If I paid the year in advance it would be less, unfortunately, I didn’t schedule this network outage and new hosting wasn’t budgeted.  Thank you so much to the people over there who have been busting tail to get my up and running again.  You don’t know how much I appreciate it!

On that note, I have to take my kids to school for the 5th day this week because I forgot to get Jordan a pop for class today.  Some fill up their punch card reward.

It is so wonderful to be back!!!  Watch for some fun reviews coming up.

Have a great day!

Teaching Your Kid To Save Money?

Posted by Heather Manning On May - 14 - 2010

Sorry to everyone who has tried to get to my site.  UCWebhost said they had a security exploit and shut the whole network down.  Turned out, they kind of lied and were bought out.  I will extend the giveaways by the number of days which were down, which if this posts today, that will be four.

This is my post from Monday, before I knew my site had gone done.  I’ll be back in a bit with a fresh post and new reviews! Have to get the kids off to school.  But can I hear a woohooo!!!!!  I’m back!!!!!

How was your mother’s day?  I hope you enjoyed it!  We spent the afternoon at my parents and had a great time!

I got my mom a solar butterfly light for her garden and a little elephant mama and her baby for mother’s day.  (She collects elephants.) I got her 2 shirts for her birthday.  She requested something that was young looking.  So I got her one of those shirts that has a tattoo like pattern on it with pink glitter roses.  I told her she needed to wear that with leggings next time we go to the casino. :)   She thinks I’m funny.  I also got her this really pretty black shirt.  I would totally wear both of them so hopefully that’s youthful enough.

I’d like to wish my mom a Happy Birthday today also!  Happy birthday mama!  I hope it’s wonderful!  You and dad have a great time out the Outback!  If you have some time, want to leave my mom a birthday greeting?  Her blog is here.

Speaking of her blog, she’s got some really cute pics of my kids up in this post.  Except it’s missing the picture of Nano in my dad’s work boots which was too stinking hilarious!

Alyce surprised me yesterday.  She is my shy shy shy one.  Usually when the cousins are together Alyce sits off to the side playing by herself.  For the first time yesterday she was running around playing with my niece Jadah (she’s 4, Alyce is 3).  They left and then Alyce was playing with Carter, her cousin who is only 3 months younger than she is.  (We have babies in groups in our family.)  On the way home she told me how nice her friends Jadah and Carter are to her.  I’m starting to think I should go ahead and put her in preschool this fall instead of waiting until next.  She really wants friends.  She talks about her friend Katiana all the time (her sister).  I was worried she would never come out of her shell but she has and she is blossoming.  It makes me happy to see her so content.

I didn’t post about this yesterday because it was Mother’s Day and I didn’t want it to be a complaining post, but I’ve got a question on how other moms teach their kids about saving money?  Jordan got $70 for his birthday back in February.  For the first time, I didn’t rush it over to the bank like I usually do.  I let him get some things that he had been wanting for awhile.  He had a few dollars left which surprised me because I didn’t see him spend that much.  He’s been collecting change, which is plentiful in our house and had $11.  We went to Gordman’s Saturday night and wanted to buy this cheap cheap, do I ever mean cheap looking bow and arrow set.  I told him no.  He needed to save his money.

He was mad.

Then we headed to Wal-Mart because I needed wrapping paper and cards.  He wanted this Star Wars action figure.  I didn’t realize that he had asked Pato and Pato said no.  I knew nothing about this action figure until he was stomping off to the car.  I took Jordan and Christiano out to the car while Pato, Kat, and Alyce were picking out my card for mother’s day.  On the way to the car Jordan tries to detour to the video game room.  I said, no, save your money.  Get in the car.  He’s stomping out the door.  Then he sees the vending machines and swerves towards them, but mom….I’m sooooooooo thirsty.  We are 5 minutes from home.  Save your money.  You don’t need to spend it on that.  He walked away from me to the next lane over from where my car was parked.  I said, Jordan get in the car.  He still walks on.  I follow him.  Jordan, get in the car.  Then he’s gone.

My heart dropped to my stomach.  Where could he have gone.  He was right in front of me.  I’m searching all over. It’s dark.  I’m thinking the worst.  A gentleman kindly pointed out that my son was hiding in between two cars.  When he realized that I knew where he was, he started walking to the car.

I laid into him.  How dare you scare me like that!  You knew exactly what you were doing when you hid from me.  Do you know what that did to my heart?  I couldn’t see you.  I didn’t know what happened to you.  One second you were there, the next you were gone.  I think something along the lines of I swear to God you ever do that again to me, I’m going to whoop your butt in front of God and everyone came out of my mouth.  I was so upset.  Have you ever just wanted to strangle them and hug them because they’re safe all in the same moment?  30 seconds – max.  Petrified.  All because he couldn’t blow his money on whatever.

He keeps telling me things that he wants.  None of the things that he was picking up were on the want list.  He wants a HTC Hero when he can get a new phone in June.  Pato said they are $78 right now.  He’s willing to put $25 towards it.  Jordan has $11.  That’s $36.  He needs $42.  His dad & grandma give him opportunities to earn money when he’s there.  I’m willing to pay him to do things that are above and beyond his chores.  Jordan’s chores are to keep his room picked up and to empty the dishwasher and get the floor, table, and counters swept/cleaned off so that I can come in and wash everything.  I would be willing to pay him to clean up the bathrooms – a job neither Pato or I relish.  I’d be happy to pay him to clean out my car because his sisters are horrible.  I’d be willing to pay him to help me fold/hang and put clothes away.  (Pato never leaves money on the laundry card so we end up washing 8 loads at once, that’s a lot of clothes to put away.)  There’s tons of ways he can help after his chores are down to earn money.  He wants to skip his chores and go straight to the money earning part.  I’m sorry.  Chores come first.

He wants to get a mouse.  Again, no problem here.  As soon as he proves he’s responsible with keeping up with his chores.  Taking care of his own stuff.  And I want him to have the money to buy the mouse, buy the food, buy the stuff the mouse needs.  We have the cage already.  If it’s going to be his pet, no one else’s as he says, he needs to be able to take care of the things he is supposed to do now and have the means to take care of his pet.

That’s not going to happen if you’re spending your money on the first cheap toy you see every time we go somewhere.

So, how do you teach your kids about saving money.  It was easy when he was younger.  We just put all his birthday money and change that he saved into an educational IRA that he can’t touch.  (Same with the girls.)  Now that he’s older though, he wants to be able to spend it.  I have no problem with putting half of the money into his IRA and the other half he can spend on what he wants, but I don’t want him to spend it on trivial junk.

On that note, I’m going to go get some stuff done.  My youngest 2 are still sleeping – shocking, I know!

Have a great day!
