life begins with mothers

Posted by Heather Manning On May - 6 - 2010

BBC America is bringing Life Begins With Mothers to us.  You have to watch these videos!  First you’ll see how the strawberry poison dart frog cares for her young, then an elephant, mama, and grandma, then on to the Weddell seal, and finally the meerkat.

Click here to watch them normal size.  I have problems with videos on my front page.  They don’t line up right.

Did I mention the strawberry poison dart frog, and how she has to give her kids each a separate room or they will eat each other?  Totally my kids! :)

Love grandma!

May I say, it takes one dedicated mama to nurse there baby lying on the ice.  I love Christiano and all, no for real, if I had to do it to protect him, I would.

The mama meerkat reminds me of myself and my little nurser.  She’s just standing there and baby comes up and starts to nurse.  He’ll try anywhere, anytime, whenever the urge hits him.  Sorry sweet, mama is not as patient as the meerkat, you can’t just go at it at the grocery store at 14 months. :)

This video is narrated by Oprah Winfrey.  Alyce, Nano, and I just sat here and watched it.  I want the whole DVD now – it will be released in June.  You can preorder it now if you would like.  As we were sitting here watching it, Alyce decided that we need to get a baby elephant and that the baby elephant needed a bath before it could come visit us.  Honey, if we can’t have a dog in the apartment, we can’t have an elephant.

I love this type of show.  Anything to do with animals.  I love to share it with my kids.  In the world we live in we don’t get exposure to anything other than your domesticated animals without a visit to the zoo.  I think it’s important to know there there is a whole world out there.  It’s not just us.  And that everything we do affects another living creature.  Showing them DVDs like this helps.  When they can see the animal, in it’s natural habitat, doing what that animal does, I think it can make an impact in their minds.  I don’t know if I can explain it the way I feel it.  I feel like if I can give them a connection with that animal, then maybe they’ll think about that animal and how they can help – or not hurt.  I want them to love creatures like I do.

Watch that video above and see some heartwarming moments.
