Turn Here

Posted by Heather Manning On April - 13 - 2010

(Heather’s Note – Check out my review of this fabulous book here!)

Wouldn’t it be interesting to look back at the experiences you’ve had in your life without judgment and without labeling them good or bad? From this lofty place at the midpoint in our lives we’ve noticed in looking back that ironically, good things often came from "bad" experiences and sometimes, bad things from "good." It really seemed to us that the road we’re on in life can end very suddenly, and as we come smack up against a bright new yellow road sign there is often no other choice but to "turn here." We would be foolish to label these detours good or bad. In the end our experience has been that we are the women we are todaybecause we’d been forced to make these turns onto new and better paths.

Cindy had a "turn here" moment when the economic downturn caused her industry to lay off nearly 1,000 people in a six-month period. There had been lots of hints that something like this might happen at her company, but she thought if she just kept her head down and continued to work hard she would somehow survive. Her fear over losing the job completely blocked out the fact that she hadn’t been happy there for some time. Working hard and being good at her job didn’t help and through no fault of her own, she found herself hurt, angry and unemployed.

After the initial shock of being let go wore off, she began to realize that there might never be another job for her in the profession she’d worked in for more than 20 years. Casting around for a way to replace the income she’d lost, she soon came to the conclusion that she’d need to retool. Walking through her fear that she might not be capable of learning something new, she signed up for a six-month course in social media marketing and merged her background in marketing and branding with these new tools and techniques.

In those six months she went from not even having a Facebook profile to teaching others how to brand themselves and their business. There were days when she thought her head would explode as she struggled to overcome the handicap of being a digital immigrant, but as the rusty parts of her brain became more accustomed to learning something new everyday, she soon came to love this fast-paced new industry. Cindy now blogs, tweets, posts and Vlogs multiple times everyday and trains others to do the same thing. She’s energized by learning new things and now realizes that turning left at this roadblock opened up a new, different and equally beautiful path.

So when we find a road sign in our path and we know we have to "turn here," we take a deep breath and get ready to walk through our fear. We now understand that this is simply a new opportunity on our adventure to being the best women we can be.

We’d like to offer you these steps that helped us walk through the fear of taking that new path.

  • Stop and assess the current situation.

Close your eyes and imagine yourself on the top of a high mountain and the wind is blowing. Look back over the first half of your life and without over thinking it, choose a moment in your life that you’ve come to think of as particularly difficult or that most altered the course of your life. Now, letting go of the "could’ve, would’ve, should’ves" of that situation, try to image that moment as a large boulder blocking your path and a bright yellow road sign that says, "DETOUR. " With your eyes still closed, turn your gaze to the left and envision a new path that you hadn’t noticed before. Allow yourself to feel curious and excited about where it might lead. As you leave the original path and follow the new path let yourself feel joyful about the adventure ahead.

  • Identify qualities that you admire.

Get out a piece of paper and a pen. Write down the names of the ten women you admire most. Again, don’t ponder this. Write down your first thoughts. Then write down the qualities or traits you most admire in these women. Read the list aloud. It might help you to look into a mirror while reading this list. Put a check mark or star next to the qualities that resonate most with you as you read them.

  • What kind of woman do you want to be?

Now you knew this was coming. What qualities do you like best about yourself. Don’t be shy. We’ve been told not to brag about ourselves since we were young girls. This isn’t bragging. This is a conversation between you and you alone. So, go for it. Are there any words on the list of qualities you admire in other women that match the words you’ve used to describe yourself? If there are, chances are good that these words are core values for you. If none of them match, don’t worry. This is a process and in the end, you get to choose the words that you want to represent your core values. We recommend that you pick the four to six words that mean the most to you right now. At different times in your life, these words might change. That’s ok. Don’t get hung up on creating the perfect list. Just pick four to six words that you think are important to have with you on the next part of your journey.

  • Create your Coat of Arms and Motto.

We like a good art project and think that the act of writing things down, creating a visual representation of our goals and speaking them out loud helps new ideas and new habits take root in our brains. We’ve created a blank template for a Coat of Arms and Motto that you can download for free at www.queenofyourownlife.com.

Add the four to six words you’ve chosen to identify your core values to the coat of arms template. Feel free to use markers, glitter pens, ribbon or whatever speaks to you. Have fun with this. When you’ve finished your project, sum it up with a Motto. Ours is "Because We Say So." To us that means the way we live our lives is a conscious choice we make everyday. Now pretending you’re still atop that windy mountain, read your words aloud. At the bottom of the page, add "I admire this woman. I admire me." Then sign your name. We admire you too.

**CLOSED** Oil of Olay Total Effects Body Wash Review/Giveaway

Posted by Heather Manning On April - 13 - 2010

Congrats to Jessie C!  I will be getting in contact with you and you have 48 hours to respond.  Congrats and thank you to everyone who entered!

I <3 Oil Of Olay products.  It’s the one consistent product in my skin care arsenal.  I use the, shall we call it vintage since women have been using it forever?  Oil Of Olay.  They might prefer me to call it classic.  You know what I’m talking about, I’m sure you’ve used it.

ge1014de

I’ve been using it since I got it in a new mommy package when I had Jordan at the hospital.  I joked around at the time, because it was the only product in the package really that was for me, that I’m not sure why they gave me that, it’s not like Jordan could look any younger.

No matter what I’ve bought, no matter what I might be reviewing, Oil of Olay goes on my face before I put on my make up.

We’ve covered that I like to use anti-aging products on my face, and I’m sure you do too, but how many anti-aging products do you have for your entire body?  *blushing* I had none.  I guess I just thought my face was the only thing would age, my skin would stay 18 forever?

I’ll admit it.  I’ve done a lot of damage to my skin over the years.  I’ve laid in a lot of tanning beds.  I don’t tan in the sun very well, but boy can I get dark in a tanning bed.  I used to tan at least 4 days a week, sometimes I went 6.  Until it got to the point where Pato told me I was too dark. That it looked unnatural.  Oops.

Now we know that I’ve abused my skin.  If you are an active reader on my blog, you know I had a skin cancer scare while ago.  It ended up being nothing, but it could have been worse.  Now, I try to take better care of my skin, use SPF, stay covered up, all of that stuff we know to do – or not to do.  I have to keep telling the part of my brain that finds tanning to be the most relaxing experience I can find that I don’t need to be 50 shades darker than I am and it’s just safer to stay pale.

Oil Of Olay has now come out with Olay Total Effects Body Wash.

totaleffects

Here’s what it does -

Olay’s most advanced body wash, Total Effects goes beyond cleansing to deeply moisturize and fight 7 signs of aging all over your body.

  1. Improves elasticity
  2. Relieves dryness
  3. Deeply moisturizes
  4. Brightens dull skin
  5. Evens skin tone
  6. Smoothes rough skin
  7. Minimizes the appearance of dry lines

For soft, smooth skin in 1 shower, improved elasticity in 1 week, and young-looking, radiant skin in 1 month.

I have now used the whole bottle, because I must use it a lot to tell you if I like it or not.  First, I love the way it smells.  It’s rich, it’s creamy, it’s smooth, it’s just a great shower experience.

Now on to what it does.  I’ve noticed that I haven’t had to use lotion much since I started using it.  That is nice.  Usually I have to slather it on when I get out of the shower or I get itchy from how dry I am.  Even my ankles are soft and my elbows aren’t chalky looking.  Those are my 2 driest areas of my body.

I don’t think my skin had a problem with elasticity yet, so I can’t really comment on that.  My skin tone does look even, but the only place I had an issue with that was on my face, above my lip, thank you mask of pregnancy.  We covered my rough elbows and ankles, I just checked and even the bottoms of my feet are softer.  I can say, the only place I have lines at are on my face, and as tempted as I was to use it on my face, I never did.  So far though, all the claims that applied to me were true.  I have to say it worked.

And I have to say I’m switching to Olay Total Effects Body Wash from now on.  Which of course will drive Pato nuts because he’d rather get the generic brand for $1.50 a bottle.  And you wonder why I was dry and itchy before.

The only thing I had to change was shaving the legs.  I now do it before I wash with the Olay Total Effects Body Wash because if I do it after, the deep moisturizing agents coat my razor and it doesn’t shave well after that. :)

If you’d like to try a sample of Olay Total Effects Body Wash head on over to Walmart.  They’ve got a sample waiting for you.

Hoover Platinum Collection LiNX Cordless Stick Vac Review/Giveaway

Posted by Heather Manning On April - 13 - 2010

Congrats to R Hicks! Thank you to everyone who entered!

Hoover has been so good to us here at The 24/7 Mom!  First they sent me the Hoover FloorMate to review and giveaway to my readers.  (You can see my review here.)  Now they have sent me the Hoover Platinum Collection Linx Cordless Stick Vacuum to try out!

linx-4 I opened the box up, put it together (just a few snaps and it was all ready).  Then I charged the battery for a few hours.  I excitedly waited in anticipation.  Surely this little vacuum couldn’t do what my big vacuum does.  Actually, that’s not saying much, my big vacuum doesn’t work that great any more.  And as I’ve posted before, the handle broke off and is duct taped together and the switch fell off – Pato rigged that together, but you get shocked if you touch it just in the right place as you turn it on.  I’ll rephrase that first thought, surely this skinny little vacuum couldn’t do as good of a job as my big vacuum did when I first bought it.

Snapped the battery into place and off I went.  It did a better job.  I usually have to go over heavily crumbed areas (I have 4 kids) 3 to 5 times with my regular vacuum before all the stuff is picked up.  Each strip was cleaned when I went over it the first time with the LiNX.  Sweet!

Not only that, but there was no cord to hold up, no cord to flip over the vacuum cleaner, and I don’t have to worry about Jordan running over the cord, something he’s done many many many times when I ask him to vacuum.

Let me give you the stats on this vacuum -

The Hoover Platinum Collection™ Cordless Stick Vacuum combines cordless convenience with powerful upright performance. Includes Hoover’s best-in-class six year limited warranty on vacuum and two year limited warranty on battery and charger.

Upright Performance

  • Windtunnel Technology™ and cyclonic filtration combine to outperform traditional corded uprights on hard floors.*

Fade Free Lithium-Ion Power

  • Fade Free Power: Interchangeable 18 Volt Lithium Ion battery ensures the battery sustains power until it is completely drained.

Windtunnel Technology

  • First cordless stick vacuum with Hoover’s patented WindTunnel Technology™, which utilizes 3 suction tunnels to lift and remove even the hidden dirt on carpet.**

One Step Cleaning

  • One-touch Brushroll activation makes easy transition from hard floors to carpets.
  • Edge Cleaning Bristles allow for closer access to walls and corners.
  • Low Profile Base and Extreme Recline Handle allow for easy access under furniture.
  • Unique Wide Mouth Opening makes quick work of vacuuming cereal, pet food, etc.
  • Stands like an upright. No leaning it on walls.

Battery Fuel Gauge

  • Battery Fuel Gauge: Battery Level Indicator instantly registers remaining battery life.

Energy Star

  • Powered by an ENERGY STAR qualified battery charger.

When they say fade free power, they mean it.  I’ve never had a problem with the suction getting weaker at all.  I’m able to vacuum, my kitchen then flip the switch to carpet and move on to the living room, hallway, and my bedroom before the battery runs out.  Actually, I might be able to do more, it’s just none of the other rooms are all cleaned at the same time, so I’ve never run out of power.  I’ve gotten to the last battery light indicator though.

I would say if you vacuum the house all at once and you have a big house then investing in a second battery so you have one charged while the other charging would be a good investment.

linx-5

When I’m going to clean the kitchen floor, I use the Hoover FloorMate to vacuum and scrub, but if I just want to do a quick sweeping of it, I grab the LiNX.  It’s perfect for my living room with kids who are constantly dragging something or other across the floor, the LiNX is light, sits easily in my kitchen closet where it’s quickly accessible, and I just turn it on, and vacuum up the mess.  No cord to unwind, no cord to rewind.

The only thing I use my big vacuum for now is for the attachments.  Say there’s a cobweb up in the corner, then I’d get out my big vacuum, though the LiNX is light enough to lift over my head, I haven’t tried to get cobwebs with it.  :)   I also use my big vacuum to clean up the bird seed Huck throws out of his cage onto my entertainment center and the floor under it. I don’t know how he gets the seed under it, but somehow he manages.

I’m going to assume that that is what Hoover’s upright vacuums are for.  Having attachments to clean up my parakeet’s seed and to get the spider webs out of the corners. :)

linx-6That’s all you do.  Now, if  Hoover could come out with a padlock adaptor to this, it would be great! It’s so easy to do, Nano has figured it out.  He can empty that canister on my living room floor in about 10 seconds.  (Hence, keeping it in the closet, I’m safe until he learns how to open doors.)

I’ve told you why this vacuum is perfect for me, I’ve thought of other people it is perfect for.  Elderly people, for one.  So light.  So easy to move.  No bending over to wind up the cord for bad backs.  My grandpa, were he with us today would have loved this.  I swear he lived for Saturday morning vacuuming.

Single people who don’t have kids making a mess.  A couple of trips up and down the living room and you’re done in a flash.

Actually, I think it’s good for just about everyone.

You might want to know about emptying it too.  Easy peasy!

Since it’s good for everyone, I might as well give one away to someone!

I’m giving the Hoover Platinum Collection Linx Cordless Stick Vacuum

Monkey See, Monkey Do

Posted by Heather Manning On April - 13 - 2010

Note – I’ve got new giveaways listed!  Go check them out!

Why do my kids always have to follow what the other one is doing?  I’m telling you, if one jumped off a cliff, the other 3 would follow.

Last night Alyce decided it would be a good idea to jump on Christiano’s toddler bed.  I told her no.  She sat down and played with her dolls.  Then Christiano climbed up next to her.  Alyce decided to jump again.  I told her no and to get down but it was too late.  Christiano thought it was brilliant too.  If you read my post yesterday, you know my sciatic nerve is acting up and I am not moving fast.  I attempted to jump up and get Christian, but it didn’t work that well.  He’s all walking on his bed, thinking he’s jumping and he fell.  He smacked his head on my vacuum cleaner that was sitting by his bed because I had just used it.

April2010-33

I snapped that picture on my phone to send to Pato.  Can you see that bump on his forehead?  It looked a lot worse in real life.  I felt so bad, 1 – I didn’t put the vacuum away, 2 – I couldn’t move fast enough to catch him.

This morning it’s just a little bruise.

Then it happened again.  Alyce thought it was a good idea to jump on my bed.  I told her to get off my bed and go to her and Kat’s room to go to bed.  Too late.  Christiano was up trying it too and fell and smacked his head into the wall.  Obviously someone’s short term memory is a tad faulty.

This morning all seems right with the world again though.  Just a little coloring on the side where he hit the vacuum cleaner.

Poor baby.

Tonight Jordan has goal keeper practice.  Yippie!  Thursday is Kat’s practice then I have games on Saturday and Sunday.

Just took about a 45 minute break to put clothes away and get supper in the crock pot since posting that Jordan had practice reminded me that I needed to have supper done by the time the kids get home from school.  We can eat at 4:45 – 5 then hop in the car and go.  Tonight’s menu?  Chicken noodle soup.

Want the recipe?  It’s nothing special, but it’s yummy.

1 can of hominey

1 can (or bag of frozen – I’m out or I’d use that) of corn

1 can (or bag of frozen, see corn) of green beans, I use french cut style

1 can of kidney beans

package of boneless skinless chicken breasts

salt (if you want)

garlic (to flavor – I usually use two cloves) (I usually use fresh, but I seriously need to make a grocery run, I used powder today)

chicken bouillon (I put in 6 heaping teaspoons for a full crock pot)– I use one from the Mexican store that is loose

3 cups of water – I add some more as it’s cooking if it seems to be cooking off fast and depending how “soupy” you want it.  I don’t usually make mine too soupy, you’ll see why below

Throw all that in the crock pot and let cook on low all day.

About 30 – 45 min before your ready to eat, throw in 2 packages of egg noodles (sometimes I use rice instead and make chicken and rice soup)

5 minutes before I’m ready to serve I get tortillas ready, I use white corn.

Dish it up.  Put the tortillas in the middle of the table.

Dig in.

We use the tortillas kind of as spoons.  We rip pieces off and spoon the soup into the pieces and eat.  Ok, Pato doesn’t actually use the spoon.  He just rips pieces off, dips it in his soup, grabs a few pieces and eat.

I prefer to do it neater so I don’t get it all over the place.

If you use fresh foods you won’t need diet pills that really work, ok, I can’t really make that claim.  I have no idea how much fat is in that dish I make.

If I didn’t have kids I was feeding, I’d throw some jalapeños or habeneros into the crock pot with the rest.  Because we’re feeding kids, I just put hot sauce on the table (bottle or homemade – I’ll give you my recipe for green salsa one of these days.)

I live for my crock pot during soccer season.  Practice usually falls right at supper time so if I throw stuff in during the morning, it’s ready before we have to leave and I don’t panic trying to get supper and kids ready.

Alright, that’s it from me this morning.

ETA – Never mind, just got an email there is no goal keeper training today.  Canceled.  Looks like we are off to regular practice tonight.  (They fall on the same night, at the same time, so we have to alternate.)  Jordan will be bummed.  He was looking forward to the first goalie practice of the season for him.

Have a great day!

9780373892150 Queen of Your Own Life: The Grown-Up Woman’s Guide to Claiming Happiness and Getting the Life You Deserve by Kathy Kinney & Cindy Ratzlaff

Discover the Seven Best Gifts You Can Give Yourself

Queen of Your Own Life is a philosophy, a decision and an invitation to happiness for women who have made the tough but rewarding journey to the midpoint in their lives. Kathy Kinney (best known as Mimi on The Drew Carey Show) and Cindy Ratzlaff (marketing genius behind the launch of The South Beach Diet) have been best friends for more than thirty years, and have helped each other navigate the ups and downs of their lives with humor and grace.

In this entertaining and inspiring book, they share the tried-and-true techniques they call "the seven best gifts a woman can give herself." They reveal how they learned to value themselves just the way they are—women in full bloom, sensual, vibrant, wise and more beautiful than ever—and they’ll show you how you can, too.

With these seven gifts you’ll discover how to:

• Claim your beauty and feel your power

• Clean your mental closet and find your queen voice

• Admire yourself for who you’ve become

• Build deep, fulfilling friendships with other women

• Establish firm boundaries that will strengthen all your relationships

• Learn the simple trick to finally being happy

• Place the crown firmly on your head

With humor, comfort and inspiration, Queen of Your Own Life offers easy step-by-step actions to blast away at the societal tall tale that young is beautiful and old is just old. If you’ve been feeling that the best part of your life may be behind you, then this book will prove to you just how untrue that is, and that the door to being happy is not only never closed, but just waiting for you to fling it open. Remember, you don’t have to be twenty to have your whole life ahead of you. Now is the time to become Queen of Your Own Life!

I have been reading a lot of heavy books lately, and while they are all wonderful, this book was an awesome change of pace.  It was so much fun!  Uplifting!  Just something I think all of us women need (and need to do).

You’ll know Kathy Kinney from her role as Mimi on Drew Carey, and a variety of others.  Her and Cindy Ratzlaff were friends who while on vacation decided they needed to queen up.  (I totally had to throw that in.  I love that phrase now!)

I’m 35 now.  I’m kind of at the in-between stage of life.  I can’t really call myself young (honestly, I still think of myself as young until a 17 year old cashier calls me ma’am.  Where’s my mother?  Oh you mean me!)   but I don’t consider myself young.  I catch myself wishing I was 23 again, back before 4 kids, when the body was a tad tighter, the wrinkles hadn’t started appearing yet, and Nice & Easy covered a strand of gray hair with ease.

Now at 35 with 4 kids, I catch myself analyzing my skin when I’m putting on make-up, cursing my hair color that won’t cover gray for more than a couple of weeks, and bemoaning the fact that I still haven’t gotten rid of the pooch from child number 2, 3, and 4.  I obsess over creams, cleansers, foundations, primers, concealers.  If someone could tell me why my make up now looks powdery on my face when it didn’t when I was younger and I slather myself in moisturizer all the time, I’d love to know.  (Yes, I’ve tried different brands.)

This over analyzing, worrying, kicking our own selves when we’re down, that’s what Queen of Your Own Life is all about.  Two women who decided they didn’t like the word crone to describe women as they aged.  Men are distinguished and handsome with their salt and pepper hair as they get older, but what are we?

They came up with steps to take charge of their lives, go after the happiness they wanted, stopped beating themselves up, learned how to say no, and really came to know themselves a lot better.  They did this in a way that was witty, light hearted, but also serious.

The easy part was reading the book.  Now comes to the hard part.  Taking those tips and applying it to myself.  It sounds so easy, but when you’re confronting the person who probably tears you down the most (yourself) it’s never easy.  The tips are so wonderful!  I’m going to print out my declaration to type on my mirror after I decorate it, digiscrapper style, because that’s how I roll!

I’m excited to dive in and start doing these things because no one is a harsher critic of me then me.  I need to stop and be my biggest supporter.
