way back.
I was updating my iPod this morning, adding music that I have bought and taking off stuff I don’t listen to much anymore. As I was scanning my songs, I came across this old diddy –
Tell me that doesn’t bring back memories! I used to blast that song and If Wishes Came True. I wanted to be Sweet Sensation man. (That’s a current My Space link too – rock on ladies!)
I remember my first concert. New Kids On The Block. (Who else would it be?) Tommy Page and Sweet Sensation opened up for them. I was 14. And short. I didn’t hit my full height of 5’4” until the end of high school. I pushed my way up to the 3rd row (standing room only thanks to the Iowa State Fair overselling tickets for the concert). I got to see Tommy and Sweet Sensation and when New Kids came out pandemonium broke out. I was being squished and the girls around me were all so much taller. It seemed like every time I got a breath, they’d spray a fire hose out at us, and I couldn’t breathe. The person next to me noticed I was in trouble and started trying to get me out. Some of the girls didn’t want to let me through. They thought I was faking it so I could meet New Kids. They ended up having to pick me up and push me over the top of the crowd (my one and only crowd surfing experience). Then they took me to the red cross center where I sat and was checked over and over again. By the time I felt better, the concert was letting out and I missed the New Kids. My heart was broken. I played Please Don’t Girl and mourned my lost concert for like a month. I was so bummed.
On the plus side, the fair learned from the experience and from what I know they’ve never oversold tickets to that extent again. And I never missed another NKOTB concert in Iowa until last year when they came on Kat’s birthday. I couldn’t bring myself to skip out on her birthday. Sometimes being a responsible mom sucks.
I think counting the first time when I actually had tickets, but didn’t see them, I’ve been to 6 NKOTB concerts. We’d drive to the other side of the state for me to see them if they weren’t coming to Ames. Love my boys.
Got to give my parents kudos for supporting my NKOTB addiction when I was younger. Who are we kidding. I still love the guys.
While we’re reminiscing, here you go –
Today Walk like an Egyptian with your Eternal Flame. If you can’t do that because it’s not Manic Monday at least Walk Like A Dinosaur in your Love Shack.
This post was brought to you by the 80’s. My favorite decade for music, obviously.
And Laura, any of them get stuck for the day?
Boom boom acka-lacka lacka boom
That just backfired. Now I’m singing – open the door, get on the floor, everybody walked a dinosaur.
Craptastic.

I was way into Tiffany, I don’t know why NKOTB didn’t knock my socks off, but they didn’t – I was/am weird. Love the crowd surfing story, at least you can say ‘you did it’.
Me – not so much.
Hilarious story
