Vampire Vacation by C.J. Ellisson
If you haven’t noticed my book tastes run the gamut. I love fantasy, romance, historical, books that make you think about your stance on life, religious books, biography, I love it at all, but most of all, I’m a sucker for a good vampire story.
When C.J. contacted me and asked me if I would like to read her book Vampire Vacation, I said absolutely!
Here is the synopsis for Vampire Vacation -
What do you get when you combine a 580-year-old vampire, her human husband, and a resort for the undead? A sexually charged, sardonic relationship between a married couple and a never ending cast of unique characters.
Meet Vivian, the supernatural equivalent of Mr. Roarke on Fantasy Island, who projects illusions to create the perfect vacation spot for vampires in Alaska. Upon a check of the guest rooms, Vivian stumbles across a murdered body, one that is neither an employee nor a guest. She and her husband, Rafe, hide the corpse, convinced they can track down the killer without alerting their customers.
When orchestrating the sexual escapades of some guests and questioning others proves to be too much for her, Vivian listens to Rafe’s advice. For the first time in hundreds of years, she agrees to involve and trust an outsider for assistance. It’s a difficult step for Vivian, who knows in the end she may wind up having to kill to keep her secrets safe.
What a fun ride this book took me on. I wouldn’t file this under ecstasy books, but it definitely has some very sensual moments. There’s a good mystery behind it, who done it type of thing. And once they have worked out who done it, then they have to figure out, well, how to get rid of it.
Vivian is a strong character. She’s sensuous, feisty, a tad sarcastic, and a lot stronger than she wants to let on to those around her. She uses her talents of projection to her advantage. She and her husband own this vacation getaway that is like every vampires’ fantasy come true. A place where vampires can let go, be themselves, not hide what they are, and have quite a bit of um, fun as a side dish. There’s a whole floor of play rooms, a dungeon, a gym, a club, all your fantasies come true.
Her husband, Rafe, is able to not age along side of her because of their mate bond. I thought the mate bond was kind of cool. I had only seen that used with the were community (and there is weres in this book too). It added a lot to the story, what they were able to do because of the mate bond.
And Vivian’s talents are some that I haven’t see worked the way she uses them in a vampire story before. It was fun and on the hot side.
C.J. Ellisson is a writer who uses a right there in front of you tone of voice if that makes sense? There is no beating around the bush. I think that is how Vivian turned out how she did. A very straight forward, tell it like it is, don’t mess with me type of lady. I liked her.
Vivian also has some unique ways of protecting the humans in her employ that I hadn’t seen used before, and I read a lot of vampire stories.
C.J. took your average vampire and added to her. Made her something that you haven’t seen before in a vampire. (At least I haven’t!) It was a very enjoyable read! I can’t wait to see more books from this talented woman!
