The Blue Pen by Lisa Rusczyk

I just reviewed Sam The Night Person for Lisa Rusczyk yesterday and last night she sent me the e-book of The Blue Pen. Um, I did it again.  Stayed up half the night reading and just finished it a few minutes ago.

I know it’s going to be hard to believe, but I liked this one even more than Sam The Night Person.  That is saying something because that book was excellent!

Here’s the synopsis:

When magazine writer Parker meets homeless woman Cleo, he decides to interview her to find out the story of how she became homeless. Over several days, Cleo describes going from recluse to star of an improvisation club, where people channel spirits and explore the paranormal side of life.
Parker is being blackmailed by another reporter to take Cleo’s story and must find a way to keep Cleo’s tale his while not letting her down in the process.

I could not begin to come up with the ideas that Lisa does, but wow does she put a good story down on paper!

The story starts with telling us about this poor little gray half grown homeless cat, and with Lisa’s details that I love so much, then goes into Parker getting ready to leave for work.  He gets in his car and there is Cleo, a homeless lady, sleeping in his car.

She may have slept there other nights but Cleo never sleeps past the sun rising so Parker has never run into her in his car.

Thank goodness he doesn’t do what the average person would do, call the police, if he had we would not have this story taking us back through Cleo’s life, we wouldn’t meet all the characters that she has met along the way, we wouldn’t taste the drinks at the Beacon as we are imagining Swan spinning around or D.D. contorting her body into graceful yet inhuman poses while 88 Fingers tickles the ivories.

The Beacon just sounds like a place I would love to see, I’m not sure if I would ever have the guts to participate, but I would love to sit and watch.

I am one who believes in things that we can’t see.  I believe there are spirits among us (from my own and from family members experiences), and believing that, I believe that there are those who have a sensitivity to them.  Thinking the way I do, this story is actually plausible.

My heart broke for Cleo so many times in the book, for her and Patrick, for Nikki, for Cleo’s child, even for her husband.

And the decision that Parker had to make at the end wasn’t easy. I probably would have done the same thing, but I would have been scared and I would have been hurting to do it.  What did he decide?  I can’t tell you.  You’ll have to read it for yourself.  He had some big decisions to make and if he made the wrong one he could hurt Cleo and he could hurt himself professionally.

Cleo is such a character.  She made my heart hurt for people on the street who have no homes.  Why are they there?  What is there story?  How did they get there?  We all have a story.  Stop and think about that person next time you see a homeless person.  What is there story that led them to the point they are at now.

I won’t tell you what The Blue Pen is.  I’ll let the story lead you to it.

Another highly recommended book from Lisa!

January2010-30

I don’t know…… what’s the word I want?  Freakin’ cold outside?  See my project 365 picture for explanation on why my son has no hat and gloves on.

Poor kids.  I went out looking for something to take a picture of, the bus was late, and they were freezing.

January2010-29

Don’t you just want to say, come inside.  Mom will make you some hot chocolate and we’ll read books under the covers.  It’s too cold for school.

Mmmmm…. almost want to say it.  This close.  Go to school chica.  You’ll thaw out when you get there.  :)

Not a lot happened this weekend.  We stayed home and hibernated.

Although, Friday night I was ticked at that beautiful innocent face up there.  I was in my room nursing the baby to put him down for a nap at about 5. Alyce was laying down too, she was tired.  I didn’t hear anyone knocking on the door and I guess Jordan was in the bathroom.  Which makes sense because Jordan hides in the bathroom for 2 hours possibly primping his hair whenever I tell them to do something. (Seriously, we’re letting him grow his hair out because he’s been begging for it for awhile and that child spends more time on his hair than I do – not that it lasts, see exhibit A, picture above.)

We have a rule.  If mom is not in the living room, short people who live in this place are not allowed to answer the door.  They need to go to the door, yell, hold on, I’ll get my mom, and come get me.   That rule must have slipped Katiana’s mind because UPS comes knocking, she tells him, sorry, my mom’s busy. And he leaves.  WHAT?  She didn’t even tell me.  I opened the door for some reason, I think I was going to go do laundry and there’s a UPS note on the door.  I look it up online and there’s not one but 2 boxes.  Katiana said, yeah, one was a little box and one was a big box.

And you didn’t think to come get me?  Maybe?  Well, you were nursing Nano and I didn’t want him to wake up, so I told him you were busy.  DUDE, don’t ever touch that door knob again. EVER. A – you don’t know who is on the other side of it and you don’t know what they want.  B – I love the UPS man.  He brings goodies!  Now I won’t get them until Monday.  Evening.  That just stinks.

I actually sent Pato all the way down to the UPS center on Saturday, thinking they were open on Saturdays.  They aren’t.  Oops.

Now when it’s just me and Alyce, there is no problem with someone knocking on the door.  I could be nursing, I could be in the bathroom, I could be right beside her.  Child will wake the dead. MOM!!!  Somebo-eeee knocking on doooooooooor!!!!!  Trained her well.  We’ll see how long that lasts.

God forbid it might be someone that I don’t want to answer the door for.  Though, I don’t remember that ever happening, you never know, it could.

Today all I have planned is a trip to the store for apple juice and milk and maybe banging on a stainless steel drum, ok, probably no drum, just thought I’d give you a visual.  I know.  Don’t get too excited for me.  I’m wondering how long I can put it off because the wind is biting cold and Nano isn’t a big fan of not being able to breathe when we step outside the door.  Kinda makes him mad.  Eh, who needs juice and milk anyone.  We got water.

and Ricky Martin today -

rmtwotd-11

That’s linked.

“The only words I can think of to describe what I’ve witnessed here today are that this is a living nightmare. The images that are now in my head will be impossible to erase,” said Martin. “Children and families impacted by this disaster will need long-term help restoring their lives—in every sense of the word. Every family is a family in need. I’m asking each of you to think about the future of the children. What they will need to survive after they are properly fed and have received appropriate medical care is a safe and decent home.”

He is such a neat person.

Check out the Ecstasy Unveiled blog tour.  I’m giving away 5 copies of the book here.

Also an ARTSCOW alert:

12″ x 18″ Canvas – $9.99 for the first and $6.99 for every other one.  I’ve gotten quite a few of their canvases and I love them.  They look gorgeous framed!

Coupon Code: 12X18CANVAS

Expiration Date: 02/14/2010

They make great presents.  I had 3 pictures of Pato’s family blown up from 4X6′s to 8X10 canvasses and he loved them.  I wanted him to be able to have a shrine to his family on our walls like I do, but he didn’t have any big pictures.  (I scanned them in at 600 DPI so I could blow them up without losing quality, I’m sure 300 DPI would have worked, but I didn’t want to have to do it again if it didn’t.) The one with his dad (who passed away 3 years ago this March) in it is in a prominent spot in our living room and we’ve gotten a lot of comments on how pretty it is as a canvas.

Have a great day!

Project 365 Day 25

Project365-2010-25

My son told me he had his hat and gloves today.  I was holding Christiano as they left and he swore he had them.

5 minutes later (roads are semi-bad and the bus was late) I handed Christiano to Pato to go outside and find something to take a picture of.  There’s my son – FREEZING – with no hat and gloves.  The bus was pulling up and I didn’t have time to go and get them.

And how ’bout them orbs? Proof that spirits revolve around my son?  Ok, in this case I’m thinking it’s snow on my lens. :)

Though I have seen some funky orbs around me in pictures.  Kinda fun guessing who they are.

ecstacy-unveiled_200Ecstasy Unveiled

Lore is a Seminus half-breed demon who has been forced to act as his dark master’s assassin. Now to earn his freedom and save his sister’s life, he must complete one last kill. Powerful and ruthless, he’ll stop at nothing to carry out this deadly mission.
Idess is an earthbound angel with a wild side, sworn to protect the human Lore is targeting. She’s determined to thwart her wickedly handsome adversary by any means necessary-even if that means risking her vow of eternal chastity. But what begins as a simple seduction soon turns into a passion that leaves both angel and demon craving complete surrender.
Torn between duty and desire, Lore and Idess must join forces as they battle their attraction for each other. Because an enemy from the past is rising again-one hellbent on vengeance and unthinkable destruction.

My favorite type of book! This looks wonderful and I cannot wait to get my hands on it and spend half the night reading it until I can’t keep my eyes open any more!  Doesn’t it look fabulous?
