Rest in Peace Hammie

Posted by Heather Manning On December - 18 - 2009

The kids informed me that you were not moving in your cage this morning.

I looked. They were right.  You have gone to hamster heaven.

Jordan’s heart is broken.   He will miss you a lot.

You were a good little hamster, except when you fought your sister to the death about 2 weeks after we got you both.

That wasn’t cool.

And I didn’t know hamsters weren’t vegetarians.

But I digress.

Other than that, you never bit, you loved running up and down the kids arms. You were a good little wheel runner.  I shall miss the sound of your wheel thunk thunk thunking all night long. (I thought you would make less noise if we got you a plastic wheel versus a metal wheel that went squeak squeak. I was wrong.)

We had you for 2 1/2 years.  That’s a good long life when you consider dwarf hamster life expectancy is only 1 1/2 – 2 years they say. (Some experts will argue that they can live up to 4 years, but I’ve never had a dwarf hamster live that long.)

I shall miss your squeaks and you racing up your ramp to stick your nose through the bar whenever I came to talk to you.  I’ll miss your soft little furry body and your little whiskers.

And you had the cutest little nose.

We’ll miss you Hammie.

Now, what to do with you.  The ground is frozen solid. :(

I should make Pato do it when he gets up. But he didn’t have that special relationship with you that the rest of us did. That just doesn’t seem right.  We’ll figure something out.

ETA – Jordan insisted on going out and digging a shallow grave for Hammie. When it wasn’t deep enough, we covered Hammie up with some of my plant dirt.  He didn’t want her to just be thrown away.  He loved her. So we said a graveside prayer and left her in the grave he dug for her.

I love him. He has such a sensitive heart.

Poor Hammie. He’s in a better place now :(

At least your children noticed he had died. My son’s hamster died almost a year ago and to this day has never said one word about the missing hamster OR cage. Hmmmm.
