My Kids Are Brilliant

Posted by Heather Manning On December - 12 - 2009

Do you ever wonder what your children are doing when they do something that would have never crossed your mind at any age?  Ok, maybe my brothers would have done this, but I wouldn’t have.

I was nursing Christiano on the couch when the kids got out of school yesterday.  Pato had taken Alyce to the store with him to get new snow boots and snow pants for all the kids.  Kat came in the house.  Then the most annoying child on the face of the earth came on my porch and tries to take off with my shovel.  First off, he has been told more than 5 times to stay off my porch.  He has a habit of coming up and taking off with the kids’ toys or sticking his face up against the glass and watching my nurse, drives me batty.  I hopped up and said, oh no.  Put the shovel back.  He said, Jordan’s stuck.  Huh?

(This isn’t even the part that makes me say what were you thinking.  Ok, maybe a little, but this is just leading up to it.) My son decided that it would be a good idea to walk through the snow instead of on the sidewalk.  We just had 14.5 inches of snow that then drifted.  It comes up over my knees.  You can imagine how high that comes on my short 10 year old son.  It was to his thighs.  Poor Christiano is sitting on the floor crying because his meal was interrupted.  I stepped outside and said, turn your butt around and get on the sidewalk.  But I’m stuck.  Well, you better just reach down, hold onto your boots as your walking and get to the sidewalk.  Give me the shovel, I’ll shovel my way out.  No Jordan.  Go.  He finally got out and to the porch.  Which, he should have gone through the front door because of all the snow.  I told him to get in the house and took Christiano to my room to finish nursing because now Thomas is outside and I don’t want an audience.   I heard the porch open.  I yelled, shut the door.  It shut.

After a few minutes I noticed it was awfully quiet.  So, the kids had shut the door with them on the wrong side of it.  I got up.  Came out to look.  Jordan was outside without a coat on.  Shoveling the grass.  I heard my neighbor who I adore yell at him as she went to her car.  Jordan, where is your coat?  I yelled, get your butt in this house right now.  I think there was something accompanying it like, it’s 5 degrees out, what would possess you to go outside without your coat on.  You could get frostbite.  Pneumonia.  I had a list of things.  I didn’t notice what else they had done at this point.

I don’t remember why, but I went out to the porch last night and glanced towards Kat’s room.  Her friggin’ window was open.  Filled with big chunks of snow.  Like bigger than my head chunks.  Pato had gone to the grocery store with Alyce at this point. I looked at Jordan and I looked at Kat.  Through clenched teeth it came out, who opened the window.  Jordan jumped to it.  Kat did.  Kat piped in, but Jordan told me to.  If Jordan told you to jump off a bridge would you do it.  (I swore I would never ask my kids that, I was channeling my mother.)  Jordan snorted and said, probably.

I put my boots on and trudged out in the snow  that went over my knees with the shovel to get the snow out of her window.  I scooped the big chunks out and told them to try to shut it.  Nope.  I scooped some more out.  They couldn’t get it shut.  I went in, took off my boots, tried to shut her window.  Stuck.  Boots back on.  Back outside.  I didn’t have gloves on.  Had to use my fingers.  Dug out more.  Back inside.  Took me 4 trips to get her window shut.  It had to be completely clean with not a speck of snow in the way to get it shut.  (We have the windows that open out, not up, there was snow stuck in the hinge that was causing most of the problems.)  By the time I got it done I had snow in my boots and my fingers were purple.  I was not happy.  I was in ticked off mommy mode and my children got an earful until I thawed out.

I don’t think they will be opening the window until spring.  If even then.

Kat’s got a birthday party today to go to at one of those places with all the jumping air filled things.  I forgot about it until 10 o’clock last night and Pato had to run to Walmart for a present.  He wasn’t thrilled with me.  That was his 3rd trip out.  Oops.  I couldn’t find the card to tell me what time it was at, so I emailed Ben’s mom, hoping she’d get it in time.  She did.  So, we’re ready with present in hand for the party at 2:30.

Jordan is going to his dad’s and life is totally unfair that he doesn’t get to go to a birthday party.

*sigh*  At least Christiano and Alyce aren’t complaining at me this morning.

Have a great day!

Oh oh oh!  I want to say thank you to Jenniffer at Born2Impress and Xtrema!  She sent me an email yesterday that I won her giveaway for the 10″ open skillet!  Very cool!  I’m excited to have a skillet that Pato can’t scratch!  Check out the rest of her giveaways.  She has a lot of them open!

And, if you want to find more giveaways, I have tons listed on my other blog.  http://giveawaychick.blogspot.com

And if you’d update your links to me, I’m using the domain http://the247mom.com

If you can’t see my image for my blog and want to, click on The 24/7 Mom up above.  Tell me what you think.  Should I change it and make it bigger?  Leave it how it is.  Take it out of the heart so it is stretched out over the top?

Thanks!
