Black Friday Shopping from Hades

Posted by Heather Manning On November - 28 - 2009

Boy that was fun.  Not really  Why do we do this to ourselves every year?  I think this was the first year that I didn’t get any sleep at all before shopping.  Stupid ToysRUs opening at midnight anyways.  Wednesday I went to sleep somewhere around 3 in the morning after getting all the stuff that needed to be done for my store done and humoring my husband’s best friend who was drunk and sleeping on our couch, that oh yes, I can see why you thought Jacob was 1000 times hotter than Edward in New Moon, but darling, you won’t make me switch teams, Jacob is like young enough to be my kid, I’d feel all wrong drooling over him.  Yes, Omar, he is hot.  No Omar, Bella does not end up with Jacob.  But then I ruined it for him and told him everything that happened in Breaking Dawn.  And he sat there devastated because he thinks that Bella will drop Edward for Mr Hotty werewolf.   After my job was done, I went to bed.  Christiano promptly got up at 4:30 AM.  So, I had to work him back to sleep.  Then all my kids got up at 7 on Thanksgiving.

We went and had Thanksgiving with my family. Then I came home and made a spreadsheet out of my Black Friday list.  I really did.  I thought Pato and I were going to split up.  We ended up not splitting up because truly it was too cold to wait in line with Christiano.  So Pato kept him warm in the car while I stood in lines holding our spot until stores opened.

We started at ToysRUs.  My sister in law got there at 10:30 and held our spot in line.  I got there at 11.  When she got there the line was past ToysRUs and all the way down to the end of the strip mall beside it.  By midnight the line went around the strip mall, back through trees and snaked all the way back to ToysRUs.  I guess there were people who decided they didn’t want to wait in that line, so they started a new line on the other side of the door.  Which really ticked off my line.  I couldn’t see from where I was, but Pato had a nice view in front of the door. He called me and said it looked like a mob had formed and that they were all screaming at each other.  Possibly because ToysRUs had come out and given the slips for the hot ticket items to the people who had formed the other line and been standing there for 10 minutes vs the people at the start of our line who had been there for 3 hours or more.  Finally they brought out 3 big burly guys to act as security and they figured out who was supposed to go in 1st.  Our line started going in 13 people at a time.  We had to hold hands with strangers around us and get awfully close to each other because the mob that had formed after the fact was trying to push their way in through us.  Of course, I’m not in one of the 13 who gets to go in when I get up to the door and Shelley and I stood there with people glaring and yelling at us.  How they had tickets.  I looked at the woman who was shoving her ticket in my face and said, only because you cut in line.  I thought I was going to be hit but it was our turn to enter the store. Shelley and I held hands and the lady behind us held my hand and so on, we rushed into the store.  I went straight to the electronics line waiting to get a new DSi for Jordan (since Pato can’t remember where he put Jordan’s when he grounded him like 4 months ago.) Pato paid for some of it and the rest came from Jordan’s dad as his Christmas present.  I got up there and people had tickets to buy the stuff.  I looked at the cashier and said I need a DSi.  Giving him a look that dared him to deny me.  He grabbed the DSi and I checked out with that.  Shelley at this point had been running all over the store with my list and her’s, coming back, emptying the stuff into our cart, running back off to get the rest.  We were rolling as we were in line to check out.  The cart was piled taller than I am because of the big boxes.  We kept knocking stuff off our cart as we tried to get around these small corners they made in their obstacle course to check out.  It was fun.

When I got up to check out, I noticed that some stuff was ringing up higher than the prices on the shelf said.  I asked the cashier 3 times.  No, it’ll take the price off at the end.  Are you sure?  Yes.  Mind you, I was checking out with $400 worth of stuff. I was getting the evil eye already, so I left meekly with my mound.  Pato and I went to Perkin’s to eat breakfast.  Sitting there I checked my receipt.  Nope, none of that rang up right.  It was $50 over.  Back to Toys R Us we went.  The lady told me those things didn’t go on sale until 5 AM. I said, your signs are up.  The cashier told me multiple times that yes, those were on sale.  Sorry, some of our staff is new.  I noticed! It was 4:00 and she wouldn’t give me the price difference, so I told her to take it back and I’d get it somewhere else.  Not knowing that the stupid Bakugan bowl I wanted for Jordan was freaking $10 more everywhere else.  So, he didn’t get that, unless I can find it on sale before Christmas.

At 4:30, we zipped off to Target.  Waited in line again, wishing I had put socks and shoes on instead of flip flops (Christiano was actually wearing tights because he kept pulling his socks off, at least he was warm – in the car with the heater going.).  We got everything and got in line.  I looked at my phone after standing there and there was 16 minutes until Kmart opened.  I was already upset because I thought I should be in line there early to get the net books we wanted for the kids.  I left Pato and Christiano inline and hurried over to Kmart.  Got there before it opened, my SIL and exSIL were in line, holding my spot again.  They opened the doors, we rushed back to electronics.  They had plenty of the computers, but I didn’t have a slip.  The cashier was horribly rude about it too, I almost cried.  They also didn’t have all but like 2 items on my list.  I grabbed those items, plus a Little People house for Alyce’s birthday (Tuesday).  Went to check out.  One of the toys was ringing up full price (I had gotten 2).  I said, that was in the ad for $9.99.  She said, it’s not ringing up as that.  Sorry.  I said, take it off.  I’m not getting it.  After I checked out and started walking away, she turned to the people behind me and apologized – sorry about that.  Excuse me?  I almost went off.  I was tired and cranky and you’re apologizing because I asked you to remove 2 items that you won’t price correctly?  I kept my mouth shut, got in my car and went back to Target where Pato was STILL in line.  It took him 15 more minutes to check out and get in the car.

Off we go to Menard’s.  It is now 6:45 or so (At least Kmart didn’t have long lines and I rushed through there.)  I am praying on the way over, please let there be 2 netbooks left, please let there be 2 netbooks left.  Then I thought, that’s probably rude to ask for computers straight up.  Please, if my kids are meant to have me get them netbooks for Christmas, let there be 2 netbooks left.  ROFL  I’m delirious at this point.  I went in, straight to a guy working and said, do you have netbooks left, he said, I’m not sure.  I said if you do, I’ll cry.  He said, you mean if we don’t you’ll cry?  I said, no, I’ve already set myself up for you not having them, if you have them I’ll cry.  They had a whole stack.  YIPPIE!  My whole list for Jordan and Kat revolved around getting those computers.

Here they are in the ad -

I didn’t notice the after $20 mail in rebate part until we checked out.  I also grabbed 2 DVD players for $15 (after rebate), foam blocks for Nano, and batteries (after rebate), plus a 2 GB MP3 player for $9.89.  The older 2 are getting 8 GB MP3 players (kind of like a fake itouch from Ebay) and Alyce loves to listen to Kat’s MP3 player, which is only a 250 GB one.  Pato said if I found a cheap one to grab it for Alyce so she isn’t fighting with Jordan and Kat over theirs.  I saw that little one and grabbed it.  Checked out, happy as a pig in mud (I’m an Iowan) that I got those netbooks.  Should I mention it took an hour and a half to check out after 20 minutes of shopping?  And I hadn’t grabbed a cart.  The people behind me took pity on me and let me put my stuff in their sled.  ROFL  We pulled it along til we checked out.  When I went to the rebate center to get my rebate cards, I just about died.  Did you know you get Menard’s rebates in Menard’s store credit?  What am I going to do with that?  Oh well.   My dad shops there and so does my ex-husband.  We’ll trade.

I went to call Pato to tell him I was finally done and at the door.  He was sleeping and not answering his phone.  Christiano had my keys so I couldn’t beep beep my car to find out where it was.  I just kept calling, panicking because my cell battery was flashing red.  He finally woke up after 7 phone calls and came and got me.

We went home, he went to work, Christiano and I took a 3 hour nap.  Then we headed to Walmart to see if they had anything left from our list.  They only had the lifesize dolls.  I got Jordan a Bakugan magazine and a Naruto magazine (he lives for those, I should just subscribe to them for him.) for Christmas, instead of the Leapfrog table that they were out of, I got Christiano a rocking mickey mouse (similar to a rocking horse), Kat a littlest pet shop virtual stuffed animal (they were out of those actually, but they had a cart that needed to go back on the shelf and it was in there) and a Barbie on a bike, and I think that’s it.  Checked out.  Came home, hid my Walmart purchases in the garage, it was really hidden.  My car had been packed top to bottom from the first round of shopping, and Pato had it all stacked in the garage.)

Mom dropped the girls off right as I shut the garage door.  Lucky there!  Then the mail man knocked on the door, dropping off the ZhuZhu pet that I won from Holley over at Savings Diner.  So stinking cute!  Then I sat down, with my receipts and wrote out everything for each kid on different sheets.  I picked out what Alyce was getting for her birthday (the ZhuZhu pet, a Little People house, Leapster Fridge Phonics, a baby, the Barbie Power Wheels, and something else, I can’t remember what it was, there were 6 things.) And ordered her birthday cake.  Alyce favorite thing in the world is the Little People.  HyVee said they didn’t have Little People cakes, but they could decorate a farm scene and I could buy a 2 or 3 pack of Little People off the shelf and they would put them on the cake.  I said, a girly farm?  They said sure!  I said, done!  I’ll pick it up Tuesday at 1.  So, that’s all taken care of.

Now I just need wrapping paper for birthday and Christmas, new panties for Alyce because I told her 3 year olds don’t wear diapers (ROFL  I’m not write), and a new webkinz for each kid or they lose their webkinz online stuff – you have to register a new pet every year.

Today, I’m doing NOTHING!  Nothing I tell you.  Well, I need to vacuum the living room, do the dishes, make something for the Dec blog train, but then I’m doing Nothing!
