Lookie!

Posted by Heather Manning On June - 14 - 2008

Stephanie Ogren is an awesome designer and a wonderful writer!  She wrote an article on the flood here in Des Moines for the Nonpareil, the paper in Council Bluffs.  And she wrote some about me and used a picture that I had taken from the flood here in Des Moines on Thursday.  You can read it here.  Or, if you’re one of my many family members in C.B. you could just pick up the paper and read it.  LOL  Thanks Stephanie!

In other news, I’m sure you heard that Tim Russert passed away.  :o (  Jordan noticed before I did on the news.  He said, mom!  There’s that guy I took a picture with.  I looked and saw he’d passed away.  so sad.  Here’s the picture of Jordan and Tim in January at a John McCain rally.

May he rest in peace.

On to the flooding. We’re still doing ok.  Yesterday on the news it said for those of us where I live to be ready to evacuate.  But we haven’t been yet.  My sister was evacuated yesterday.  A levee broke over night.  There is a stunning picture of it here on the front page of the Des Moines register.  I think it hit an area that has already been hit hard.  This is sad.

I was thinking, and I’ve mentioned this to a few people.  If Iowa is the #1 producer of corn in the world, and we’re already in a world wide food crisis, what is the trickle down effect going to be?  Governor Culver was comparing this to ’93.  He said that the value of the crops lost in ’93 with today’s dollar would be $1 billion.  And he is expecting it be worse this time.  Our ag sector is going to take a huge hit.  And though I’m not a farmer, Iowa is known for being a farm state, and we’ve just lost almost our whole crop.  A crop that we export to the world more or less.  What happens now?

Has our president or any of our federal officials noticed what is going on here?  I haven’t heard any thoughts from any of them on the crisis here.  I just see our local and state officials taking care of business.  Speculating Iowa’s future.  and our National Guard, those wonderful men and women have been working day and night to help in this crisis.  83 of our counties have been declared disaster areas, 9 of our rivers are at historic flood levels.  It is a mess here.

I’m going to sign off.  I hope you have a wonderful day.  Keep Iowans and others affected by these huge floods in your thoughts and prayers.

The rest of the pictures of our adventure yesterday

Posted by Heather Manning On June - 13 - 2008

You can see the pictures of Des Moines being flooded in yesterday’s post.

Ok, usually I edit and crop the pictures than upload to online and such before I post them, but I’m feeling lazy today.  LOL  So you get them au natural.

We went downstairs at this little recreation area with an office at Saylorville yesterday.  The kids got a kick out of some of the things there.  Not quite the zoo, but they were happy.

floods 097

Meet Mr Short-Nosed Gar – I guess one of the many fish you’ll find at Saylorville?

floods 098

I don’t remember what they were.

floods 099

Some kind of bass.   Yes, he was posing.

floods 100

Alyce and a fox

floods 101

Katiana and Alyce and a badger – he looks like a mean little critter

floods 102

Petting the badger

I couldn’t get a picture of Jordan, he kept moving – here, there, everywhere, so much to see and do.  LOL

So, all in all it was a good day.  The kids and I got out of the house, out in nature, and when I wasn’t fretting about touching 3 leaved red stemmed pretty plants – AKA Get away from the poison ivy please, I was having such a fun time.

I’m not sure when they are expecting the rivers around here to crest, but keep Iowans in your prayers right now.  Parts of the state have been hit hard and destroyed.

and on a lighter note –

I have released my Doodly Do Birds.  My doodly do line has been one of my best received lines and I thought, why not birds?  So here they are!

The second preview shows how the PNGs would appear at 50% on a 12 X 12.  Including in this set is PNG, ABR, and JBR files.  Meaning, EVERYONE can use them!

Doodly Do Cutie Birds Personal Use

Doodly Do Birds Commercial Use

I also opened the grab bag yesterday and everything can be seen on the News blog.

The Floods of 2008

Posted by Heather Manning On June - 13 - 2008

We went out driving around today to look at the flooding that is occurring here in Iowa right now.  Well, at least in the Des Moines area.

floods 006

Alyce all ready to go, notice that binky in her mouth?  She found one after 18 months of never using one and decided she now must have one.

floods 007

I don’t know, I just think she’s cute.  LOL

floods 009

Ok, actually, first we stopped for tacos.  LOL  Alyce was sleeping.

floods 010

The other 2 waiting for tacos

floods 011

I’m sure somebody is doing something here that garnered this look. LOL

Ok, now we’re off to see some flooding.

floods 013

Ok we were going anywhere between 35 – 65 when I snapped these pictures (On roads or the interstate).  So some might not be great.  This is a bridge on the East Side (mom – it’s the one going to Abby’s house)

floods 015

Same bridge

floods 021

Still on the East Side – we were heading towards Euclid – for those of you familiar with this area.

floods 024

Another bridge – I think we were still heading towards Euclid, but not sure exactly

floods 030

flooded street on the East Side

floods 034

I think we’re on the interstate here between 2nd Ave and Merle Hay Exit, going towards Merle Hay

floods 038

Same area – not bad for going 65 MPH  LOL

floods 039

Same area

floods 040

I don’t think the river is supposed to be here

floods 041

different angle of that house – again, I think this is right between 2nd and Merle Hay

floods 042

that’s a tree – opposite side of the interstate from the house

floods 051

right before the Merle Hay Exit

floods 052

The sign saying you can get McDonald’s and Perkins off the Merle Hay Exit.  It was in a lot of water.

floods 056

The bridge off the merle hay exit

floods 066

Going over the mile long bridge at Saylorville

floods 069

Right out my window on the mile long bridge.  Usually you have to lean out and look down to see the water – not today

floods 077

We got out at one of the observation points at Saylorville Lake

floods 088

Another shot from the look out point.  It’s crazy how beautiful yet how dangerous it is.

floods 085

Pato and Alyce at the observation point – yeah mom, it scared me too.

floods 084

Jordan

floods 087

Does Katiana look nervous to you?

Then we went inside.  I’ll show you those pictures tomorrow.  This has so many already.  So that is a welcome to Des Moines, IA during the floods of ’08.  Next time I bring another card or flash memory or something.  I took almost 200 pictures AND my battery was close to dead.

Anyone building an ark yet?

Posted by Heather Manning On June - 11 - 2008

And how many of you in Iowa remember the floods of ’93?  Yeah, stupid question huh?  That was the year I graduated.  I remember my best friend Danielle and I trying to take a road trip to Council Bluffs and we couldn’t get out of our town in any direction.  No showers for a few days, no drinking tap water for longer.  It stunk.  Literally at times.

I was 18 and free back then.  No responsibilities to tie me down.

Flash forward to ’08.  Some are saying it’s going to be worse than 93.  WHAT?  How could it be worse than 93??  Rumors are going around that Des Moines Water works will be shutting down the water plant.  But Water Works is saying that they’ve made enough changes since ’93 that we won’t lose water.  Bridges in downtown Des Moines are shut down.

(Our bridges were shut down at 2:00 yesterday afternoon)

(Photo courtesy of the Des Moines Register)

That’s one of our bridges that is close to be taken over by the water.  And that’s BEFORE they opened the emergency spillway down at Saylorville dam.  They are saying that 10 hours after they opened the spillway that billions of gallons of water will rush into downtown Des Moines.  People were sandbagging Des Moines and surrounding communities yesterday.  We were all buying out water at our grocery stores and Walmart.  I am myself currently sitting on 10 1-gallon jugs of water, 3 2-gallon containers, and 4 12 packs of 20 oz bottles of water.  And I was walking through walmart noticing that I had less water than most other people in my cart.  Did I need more??  I am stocked up in paper plates, styrofoam glasses, and plastic silverware.  Our propane tank on our grill is filled to the top so that we won’t have to use the stove and dirty up pots and pans should they shut off the water due to contamination.  All my dishes are washed and my children bathed.  They’ll get another bath this morning, just in case.

Everyone is nervous because the only thing we have to compare this to is ’93.  And it’s supposed to be worse than that???  My lord we’ll all be under water.  Actually, many towns in Iowa already are.  Areas have been evacuated.  And those of us sitting in certain areas of the suburbs of Des Moines feel safe, at least we are putting on that game face.  We’ll be fine!  But inside our nagging heads we’re wondering if we shouldn’t buy more water?  Fill up the sinks and tubs so we can flush the toilets should we be without water for 11 days like in ’93.

With all this water from the spillway racing into Des Moines, guess what it’s doing right now?  Raining.  We’re supposed to have severe thunderstorms today, and I think tomorrow, and who knows anymore about Saturday?

Do the residents of Des Moines and the surrounding suburbs need to put all a call to build an Ark?  Are we going to float away?

I’m actually kind of nervous because this time I’m not seeing all this through the wild excited eyes of a teenager.  I’m seeing it through the eyes of a mother who wants to know how many baby wipes she’ll need to keep her children clean.

With gas at $3.85/gallon right now, I certainly won’t be able to drive out to my parents’ house to bathe my stinky children every day if they don’t lose water.

Here is one of those stinky children just a few hours after her first bath of the day yesterday-

I don’t think she really cares whether we lose water or not.  She thinks being wiped down with a baby wipe is funny.  At least on her toes.  She’ll fight you like a tiger if you try to clean her face.  She got thrown into an emergency bath last night, just in case we lose water and can’t clean her up.

Good luck to all of you in the path of the waters!

And might I say, I’m mighty glad my computer doesn’t run on clean water.

Another Boring Weekend

Posted by Heather Manning On June - 9 - 2008

I’m so bored, I could scream. I want to get out of the house. If he doesn’t get his car fixed soon, I may hurt him. LOL We did nothing again this weekend but stay home. Clean, work, boring. Oh, but I did find a picture that I took and I wanted to ask you all what in the world it is. LOL

First we thought Eagle of some type, then we though hawk? Then I said, owl? Then someone else said falcon. On my apartment building? So, you tell me, what the heck is this?

He looks angry whatever he is. LOL Not to thrilled to be the subject of my photo taking. Angry, but beautiful none the less.

Ok, I googled eagle than hawk, and I think I’ve figured it out. Does he look like a Ferruginous Hawk to you guys?

How about a couple of pictures of my rainy day girls on Saturday. They wanted to go outside and play so bad. Jordan just wanted to listen to his MP3 player inside, so I didn’t get any shots of him.

Aren’t they just beautiful? I might be biased, but I think they are. LOL Katiana has my curly hair. YAY! It looks like Alyce’s might start curling there on the bottom. It’d be nice if my girls got ONE thing from me and they weren’t ALL daddy. LOL

And this is what I meant by rainy day. It was pouring!

You can’t really see the rain in this shot, but you can see how fast it’s coming out of the drain spout thingy.

I couldn’t get a great picture. This is a normal tree, with normal leaves, not a weeping willow. LOL That’s all rain that you see. It’s just not a great shot.

There you can see it above my porch.

That’s what our weekend was like. Soggy and wet.

Tomorrow Pato promised us another feast/cook out. We really have to go grocery shopping though. It’s time for my once a month trip. LOL He can stay home with the kids while I go do it. I can get out of the house. If it would stop raining ever he could take them to the pool. They’ve been begging to go, but I’m just not ready to brave the cold water yet. It doesn’t matter how hot it is outside our pool doesn’t warm up until August. LOL

Have a wonderful day!

Good morning!

Posted by Heather Manning On June - 7 - 2008

I’m tired.  Not sure why I got up when I did.  You know that tired that you can barely open your eyes all the way while filling the coffee pot with water, almost forget the coffee.  That tired.

Katiana is asking for ice cream already this morning.  *sigh*

Pato went ahead and looked at his own car last night because someone is complaining she is tired of being left here without her car.  There’s a hole in the motor about 4 inches around – at least that’s what he showed me with his hands.  So, I’m thinking he blew something when it broke down.  *sigh*  Just what we need.  Having to buy another car.  One step forward, two steps back.

And this just is another tick for why we need to move to Ohio and get that restaurant going.  Stop this circle of getting ahead, something kicking us in the behind.

I don’t want to move to Ohio.  I have the kids registered for soccer this fall, Kat’s registered for preschool.  I know they have soccer and preschool in Ohio, but still.  We’ve been going to the same doctor for – well, since I was 14.  He’s been seeing my kids since they were born.  I love their dentist.  I don’t want to go.  :o (

On to a different subject.  I was surfing around for diet pill reviews again, just to add my own about the Nuphedrine that I’m taking.  And my goodness there’s a lot of different stuff out there.  How do you know what is safe to take?  Don’t tell me none of it is.  LOL  I would like to find a legitimate site that real people submit their reviews to.  So you know how things affect real people.  Know any good ones?

Ok, I’ve got to run up to the gas station and grab some stuff before someone leaves with my car for the day and stuck here at home without apple juice for the kids.

Have a great day!

Know what I want to do?

Posted by Heather Manning On June - 7 - 2008

I always get jealous when I tell Blythe that I’m going to the casino here in Iowa and she’s says, I’m going to Vegas!  LOL  (Ok, for rumors sake, she does not say that every single time) I want to go.  So, Blythe, I think we should go stay at one of the gorgeous las vegas hotels.  Hit the slots, take in a show, eat good food, and have a blast.  I think we both deserve it.

Now to find a cheap ticket to Vegas.  LOL  And a baby sitter?

Weather in Iowa

Posted by Heather Manning On June - 6 - 2008

Holy moly that was crazy last night!

I knew it was going to be yucky again, thunderstorms, etc.  You could smell it in the air.  But wow, it got a little bit nutty.  I was sitting outside with my neighbor chatting when all of a sudden the rain just started coming down hard.  Then the sirens start going off.  Now, someone correct me, cuz I could be wrong –

Tornado Watch – Weather is perfect for a tornado

Tornado Warning – One has been spotted

They only set off the sirens for an actual warning.  I’m telling the kids, go go go!  (down to the laundry room) and Kat, my sensitive scared of her own shadow child, starts FREAKING!  She was crying and screaming.  And it was not fun.  I get us down to the laundry room, which is where our lease says to go, sit down up against the wall and our neighbor said, Heather, you don’t want to sit there.  I thought, duh – outside wall.  So, we get back up and sit in the hallway with everyone else.  Katiana proceeded to carry on.  I asked her if she wanted to call daddy?  she said yes.  Daddy wasn’t answering.  So she called grandma.  My mom got on the phone with me and said, Heather, she doesn’t even know what a tornado is.  Who is scaring her?  I was like, I swear, nobody!  I think it’s the authoritative tone that said, go go go!  Move it!  LOL  I don’t use my emergency voice often.  No, it’s not a screaming voice, it’s my you better listen to me voice.  Pato called right after I hung up with my mom and I said the sirens are going off.  He said why?  I said, I don’t know why would the tornado sirens be going off in June?  A tornado?  Bueno, honey.  LOL

We got the all clear to go back home, so we came down here where I proceeded to finally get our emergency bags ready.  I’ve now got my laptop back in it’s bag with my bamboo tablet and my external.  I’ll just leave it in the bag, take the external out to back up my computer, but I think I’m going to leave it in there just in case.  I really need to zip up all my files and put them online somewhere too.  My pictures that is.  Then I got a bag ready with diapers and a change of clothes for each of the kids, Pato, and myself.  Then I grabbed my camera, charger for that, and phone charger and threw that in the diaper bag, just in case.  Oh you should have seen my kids.  LOL  Katiana has her own bag packed with her webkinz because she doesn’t want them to blow away.  And Jordan had a bag packed with his laptop, charger, his and Kat’s gameboys, and a pillow.  LOL  I’m sure there were some YuGiOh cards put in there for an emergency too.  You never know when you might HAVE to duel.  In all this packing excitement, Alyce went and got one of her dolls and was carrying it around.  If the rest of them were getting stuff, she was going to take her toys too.  LOL

Then Pato calls me and tells me that it is raining so hard he can’t see anything.  He pulled under a bridge to wait it out.  He said, what do I do if a tornado comes?  I said, get out of the car and lie flat in a ditch.  He said, there are no ditches.  Dude, your screwed.  ROFL  I said, get somewhere lower than the rest of the ground and lay down flat on your stomach.  Do you not have tornados in Mexico???

He and my Windstar made it home in one piece.  Not blown off of the road to Kansas.  When he got home it was still raining pretty hard.  I was on the porch waiting for him while my children were dancing in the rain.  Seriously soaked by the time they were done.

And I thought this morning, for my own good, along with anybody else who needs a refresher course in severe weather in the midwest (or anywhere else tornados are abundant) I’d look up the what to do just in case info.

This site here had tornado safety tips – Tornado Safety Online FAQ

And I was right about the difference between the warning and the watch – except the warning also could be that Doppler radar shows there is thunderstorm circulation which can spawn a tornado.

And for Pato to read next time –

In a car or truck: Vehicles are extremely dangerous in a tornado. If the tornado is visible, far away, and the traffic is light, you may be able to drive out of its path by moving at right angles to the tornado. Otherwise, park the car as quickly and safely as possible — out of the traffic lanes. [It is safer to get the car out of mud later if necessary than to cause a crash.] Get out and seek shelter in a sturdy building. If in the open country, run to low ground away from any cars (which may roll over on you). Lie flat and face-down, protecting the back of your head with your arms. Avoid seeking shelter under bridges, which can create deadly traffic hazards while offering little protection against flying debris.

While we were in the hallway, one of my neighbors told me that after the tornado went through and devastated Parkersburg, IA, they now have a huge invasion of frogs.  Yes, frogs.   I asked if locusts were soon to follow?  I was half joking and half not.  After watching all of this devastation occur over and over again, I am starting wonder if we aren’t living in the beginning of the times that Revelations describes?  Just a thought that pops in my head – wars and rumors of wars, famine, pestilence, earthquakes, etc etc etc.  I think everyone has tried to predict the end of the world since the beginning of the world.  Trying hard to read the signs and compare them to what is going on.

Not meaning to start a debate on religion, just getting my thoughts out as usual.

Have a wonderful day!
