Yesterday started out well, it really did. Then I got the girls down for a nap and my phone rings. It’s the nurse at Jordan’s school. Jordan has been down in her office 3 times with a tummy ache. No fever. Up to me whether to go get him or not. So, I talk to him, he really doesn’t sound sick. I talked to his teacher and asked if something was going on that he might not want to do. She said, you know that’s what I thought. But he’s done everything we’ve needed to do today. He’s not acting like himself, but he hasn’t been himself in a couple of weeks. I decided I’d go get him.
So, I get both girls back up and dressed (it was cold yesterday, like below zero cold at this point.) Start the car, wait for it to warm up. Get up to the school where the nurse meets me outside her office and said, he’s not sick. He’s been laying there playing with another boy, giggling, laughing, having a jolly old time.
So, I went in and said, what’s going on? No mom, I’m really sick. Well, it took about 5 minutes. Come to find out, that little boy who did this to him over the summer – remember this?
Well, that little boy threatened Jordan at breakfast. Told him he’d be waiting for Jordan to get off the bus and he’d kick his a$$. That of course led to the stomach ache because he was nervous and didn’t want to ride the bus.
I told Jordan in front of the nurse that either the principal, the nurse, or the guidance counselor would talk to Daniel before they left school, I promise. (The nurse was just nodding her head and saying, oh yes, I promise, we’ll take care of it.) And I said, I will be standing at the sliding glass door when you get home. And I dare him to touch you while I am standing there.
So, the guidance counselor talked to both boys. Talked to both bus drivers (Daniel’s on a different bus, which is funny because he lives in the next building over.) Got on the bus with Jordan, talked to him a little more.
Jordan gets home, I’m standing at the door, and I can tell something is wrong. He comes up, his nose is red. He’s been crying. Well, Keegan punched him in the nose on the bus. Another kid we’ve had problems with. But who hasn’t caused one recently, and has actually been playing with Jordan recently. I look closer, his nose is swollen and red. So tired of this. So, I leave messages for the bus driver, the guidance counselor. I’m sick sick sick sick and tired of this. He didn’t tell the bus driver this time because he is sick of being known as a tattle tale. So tired.
Then, this happened. If you’ve been to DST, you’ve already read this probably, but for those who haven’t, I’m just going to copy and paste what I put at DST, cuz it’s a long story.
So, I’m in my bedroom changing Alyce’s diaper (my 13 month old) when my son comes running in and says, mom they’re vacuuming in the hallways and banging on the doors. Now, may I say, my oldest 2 are running around in the underwear, a habit I haven’t been able to break. So, I fasten Alyce’s diaper really quick, and go out to see what was going on.
Fire alarms going off, fire doors shut, everyone in the hallway going, what is going on. A man comes in and says, everyone out!!!
So, I run in my apartment, scream at my kids to get their clothes on. Hurry up, put Alyce’s pants, boots, and coat on, my 3 year old is running around screaming and crying that we’re going to be fired and she can’t find her clothes. My 8 year old can only find his shorts at this point. Shorts, it’s 3 degrees out. They both get their boots and coats on and on the way out the sliding glass door, what do I grab?
What would you grab? Yep, my external hard drive. Might seem silly but it has every single picture I’ve ever taken of the kids since I first got a digital when I was pregnant with Kat. So, it wasn’t just scrapping reasons, though all my work is on it too. That’s least important, it’s all in the store, ok, all the stuff I’ve bought is on it too.
Look down, there’s the bag with my laptop. I throw the hard drive in the bag, grab my purse, I couldn’t even tell you if I had my car keys. I did have my cell phone though.Get outside, Jordan runs to the van to get alyce a blanket out of it. Finally a fire fighter comes up and tells those of us with babies and little ones to get in the back of the ambulance.
We sat there for awhile. They finally cleared the first floor to go back in. Then the second, and the third floor just got cleared.
Turns out someone on the third floor set fire to their kitchen on accident. Bad enough they had to use the hoses. And the poor lady who lives on the first floor got the worst of the water. Her apartment is flooded, and it’s all soggy in the hallway.
But, we’re safe. That was way too close for comfort. I’ve never actually been in a building that had a fire in it before. Next time I need to make sure my car keys are in my purse in case we have to leave.
So, what would you grab if there was a fire? I should have grabbed a diaper for Alyce. The diaper bag was in the kitchen and I didn’t go that way, so I didn’t think about it. Both of my kids were crying for their webkinz. I told them next time, stay dressed, and they might have time to grab them rather than searching for clothes.
Oh but after that, there was more!
It got a little more exciting again last night, I had gotten Jordan to bed finally. (He has school today and couldn’t wind down after the excitement very well.) When I heard the fire alarm bzzzz really quick then stopped. I held my breath for a couple of minutes, then I was ok. 5 minutes later, up pulls a big old fire truck with the lights going. I was like, not again. Katiana (my 3 year old) was again running around getting worried, mom are we going to get fired again? Mom? Mom?
So, I ran out in the hall way – barefoot mind you, I promise that’s relevant. I asked the firefighters if we needed to evacuate again. And one of them asked if the alarm had gone off, I said, just for a second. The other guy said, you might want to back up, you’re standing in vomit. EW! I looked down, and sure enough, in my paniced state, I didn’t notice that someone had thrown up all over the hallway. And didn’t clean it up. GRRRRRRR!
They told me it was fine, and to go home. I did, and took a shower. Gross.
Let’s hope that’s the end of the fire excitement. I feel so bad for the woman down the hall. I was listening to them give her instructions. (The firemen) It was like we can’t do anything about the water damage, that’s the apartment’s job. Watch the buckets, empty them, DO NOT turn on your kitchen light, you could be electrocuted or it could start another fire. AGH!. LOL
And the guy who started the fire. He was downstairs in the hallway because they hadn’t cleared the third floor yet. Michelle our apartment manager was talking to him, do you need a coat (tshirt and shorts outside), he didn’t speak English well, and she was trying to explain that he wasn’t in trouble but that he needed to answer some questions. He looked so nervous and so embarrassed with all of us standing out there staring at him. I felt bad for him. I’m sure he didn’t mean to set fire to his kitchen.
)
After that, I was done for the night. LOL And to think Pato missed all of this. Well, he got to step in the puke on the way into the apartment. EW!
So, what has Heather learned from all this? I need to have an emergency bag packed to grab in case something like this happens again, with clothes, diapers, all that extra stuff. I need to back up all of my stuff to DVD and send copies over to my mom’s house. Just in case. That way I don’t have to worry about my hard drive next time. And I need to scan in my important pictures (like of my grandparents), ones I can’t replace and put those on DVD to go to my mom’s house. That way, I don’t lose all of those precious things to me. And I need to break my kids of running around in their underwear. Seriously, they both had clothes on during the day yesterday, so why could no one find any clothes last night? Besides the fact they seemed to forget where their dressers were with more clothes. LOL
