Oh what a day

Posted by Heather On August - 21 - 2007

Yesterday was such a long day.  And a sad day.  But it ended happy.

Let me start with Sunday evening because that will let you know Alyce’s frame of mind.  I told you she was getting laryngitis.  When I looked in her mouth on Sunday, I knew she had thrush.  So, I took her to the dr.  She has it all over her tongue which is where they normally get it.  She also has it down the back of her throat.  Poor baby.  And she has yeast in the diaper area.  So, she’s got her prescription for the mouth and monistat for the diaper area.

And the dr royally ticked me off.  It was a different clinic than I normally go to because our clinic closes at 3 on Sundays.  It’s in the same system, just a different location.  And while this dr made me feel like an idiot because I hadn’t brought her in sooner (she had a little white on her tongue the night before, but I thought it was milk) the comments on breastfeeding her royally ticked me off.

This was our conversation:

“Do I need something for me with her having thrush?  I still nurse her.”

“No, just wash well after feeding her.  How long are you planning on nursing her anyway?”

(Can I say here that everything he said from the start of the visit was said with a condescending tone.)

“I don’t know, I nursed Katiana for 16 months.  I haven’t decided how long I’m going to nurse her yet.”

“You know, all the health benefits that she is going to get from nursing are done by now.  There ARE other ways to give love and affection rather than nursing her.”

Excuse me?  I didn’t think to ask him why if the health benefits for nursing stop at 8 months, why the American Association of Pediatric doctors recommends nursing til 12 months and longer as long as it is mutual desirable by mother and baby?  until after we left.  As if breast milk loses it’s nutritional value over time.   As if my body doesn’t make new all day long every day.  GRRRRRR!  My pediatrician knows that I swing back and forth between wanting to quit all the time.  I get frustrated with being bitten, but really, I love that closeness we share when I am nursing her.  I love the way she looks up at me while she’s nursing.  I love the way she sighs when she’s happy and nursing.  But, when I’m frustrated and talking about quitting, my dr will say, Heather, babies are like plants.  Feed them and they will grow.  Feed her breast milk, she’ll be fine, feed her formula, she’ll be fine.  Just feed her.  LOL  Ok, I feel better.

So, it was a long drive to Council Bluffs for the funeral with Alyce not appreciating her car seat.  But, we made it.  And we went to the funeral for my great aunt.  Broke my heart to see my great uncle Marvin sitting there.  He’s the last one of my grandpa’s siblings.  Just broke my heart.  That’s all I can say.  Then we went to the cemetery.  After Aunt Velda was buried.  We went over to my grandparents’ graves.  My Aunt Sue and I got a little upset at the way they are being taken care of.  This place has the grave stones set into the ground.  We could hardly find my grandparents.  I sat down right there in the middle of my relatives and pulled all the grass away and cleaned off the piles of dead grass clippings and dirt so that it was as shiny as I could get it again.

After that, this was kind of cool, we went over to my Great Grandparents, and a great aunt that I have never met because she died of leukemia when she was 12.  THEN, we went to my Great Great Grandpa’s grave.  It’s just neat to see your history like that.  I didn’t know everyone was buried in the same place, and not far from each other.  My great grandpa was only 46 when he died.  My grandpa would have been 10.

Then we went to the Elks lodge for the luncheon that you have after a funeral.  And then drove the 2 hours back home.  My mom and I sat and sang, oh you can’t get to heaven, in a rocking chair, no you can’t get to heaven, in a rocking chair, no you can’t get to heaven in a rocking chair, cuz rocking chairs don’t go no where.  LOL  Til Alyce went to sleep.  It’s the only song she would stop crying for.  I think she liked the harmony.

Then the happy part was we made it back in time for Jordan’s open house at school.  He was all smiles meeting his new teacher and seeing friends and old teachers.  We ran into his guidance counselor, the SWEETEST person I have ever met.  She asked me who Jordan’s teacher was, and I told her and she said, Oh Heather!  What a great match!  (Jordan has ADHD)  So, I feel better having her stamp of approval on it.

Jordan’s soccer coach called last night too to make sure that I knew practice starts tonight.  Woohoo!  Goalies this year!  He’s moving up to under 10.  I told him how excited Jordan would be to be able to play goalie.  And his coach thinks that Jordan would make an awesome goalie.  He said he was the best sweeper (full back) they had on the team last season.  Gave me a little thrill of pride.  LOL  Pato plays goalie still and I played sweeper for 6 years.  We are just a defense kind of family.  Katiana was begging to play soccer after I got off the phone with his coach.  I think  she can play next fall.

Alrighty, this is a book!  See, I don’t blog for a day, and I’ve got so much to share.  LOL  I’ll talk to ya tomorrow!

Blah

Posted by Heather On August - 19 - 2007

That’s pretty much how I feel today.  My back kept me from sitting here too long yesterday, so I didn’t get to blog.

I’ve been going to my chiropractor and it’s a little better.  Not quite so intense.  It was funny, kind of.   I said now that the pain isn’t so intense in that one spot.  I’m starting to notice that it’s in my right hip when I walk.  That whole area is just out.  He said, oh Heather, that whole leg is gonna hurt before it gets better.  Gee, thanks for the positive news.  LOL

Poor Alyce.  That child just can’t catch a break.  She just got over the ear infection, and 4 of the 6 teeth are completely through, 2 of them are just really making a bump on the bottom like they are ready to pop through, and now, she has what sounds like the start of laryngitis.  You really should hear her cry.  It’s like waaah, squeek, waaaah, squeek.  And the waaah part is really, I don’t want to say scratchy, but fading, I guess would more be the word I’m looking for.  And when she babbles, her voice is really…well, like someone getting laryngitis.  Poor thing.  And I know laryngitis in itself isn’t a sickness, but something isn’t right because she is cranky.  Wanting to be held all the time, fussing when I’m holding her.  But, no fever.  Her nose isn’t running, so I’m not sure what it is.  I wish she could tell me if she has a sore throat or anything.  But, alas at 8 months old, when I say, you tell mommy what’s wrong with you, she really doesn’t have an answer but to cry and rub her eyes.  Poor baby.

The time I have been on the computer, I’ve been working on Bunny’s faceted gem tutorial.  My lord.  What is wrong with me?  LOL  I follow the steps exactly, and my gem doesn’t look like hers.  LOL  I don’t follow the steps exactly, changing the blend modes, etc and it still doesn’t look like that.  Oh well, I am nothing if not persistant when it comes to learning something.  And Bunny is a great teacher.  If you’re looking to learn some new tricks, you really should check out the classes she has up at DSO.  They are great!  There’s some newbie stuff and some more advanced stuff if you’ve been playing in PSP awhile and want to learn some new tricks.  Like me.  we can all learn something new!  I did the basic gem tutorial first, and after a few goes at it, loved the result that I got with it.  You’ll see it if you get my personal grab bag when it comes out.  (And that’s the only hint you’re getting from me on what is in it for September.)

This is the time of year when life gets busy for us moms of school aged kids isn’t it?  I was sitting there thinking last night, I’ve been used to a nice lazy summer, now it starts.  Monday, I’m driving up to that funeral for my great aunt – it’s 2 hours away – the funeral starts at 1.  Jordan’s open house at school starts at 6.  I’m hoping to be able to get back in time for that.  But, I did leave a message for his teacher wondering is we aren’t able to make it back if on Tuesday, I could just run him up so he can find his class, leave his supplies, and say hi to his new teacher.  Hopefully she’ll get back to me tomorrow.

Then Tuesday, soccer practice starts.  He has that Tuesday and Thursday, and a game on Saturday.  Now, ask me if I know where his new uniform is?  I told him to leave it in the bag, and lo and behold the bag is empty.  AGH!  Must search for that.

Wednesday school starts.  HALLELUJAH!  ROFL  I didn’t get Katiana in preschool this year because finances are not so that I can afford $150 or so extra a month for 2 mornings a week.  She’s only 3, so hopefully next year I can get her into the preschool through the school.  Though, I really would like to have her in it now.

Pato hasn’t left yet.  Something is wrong with his car. I don’t remember if I told you that or not.  There is something wrong with the shocks, and the tirewell is almost sitting on the tire and does when you turn or hit a bump.  And it’s eating tires.  He’s worried about driving for 13 hours straight at 70 MPH.  So, he’s taken it to two mechanics so far who don’t work on these little sporty shocks he has in his car.  He needs to find one who does.

And we got something in the mail yesterday that we need to renew are lease, if we don’t, we’ll have to pay a month to month fee and lose the discount we get for signing a year’s lease.  Plus, an extra $15 a month for extra person charge.  Let’s see if I can figure this out.  We have a 3 bedroom apartment and a garage.  The garage is $50/month.  Ok, our base rent is $635 right now.  Add the garage, that’s $685.  We had 5 people in a 3 bedroom, any over 3 is $15/ per person extra a month.  (Do you really think the baby uses $15 a month more in water?  that’s their reasoning – I mean, she doesn’t know how to flush the toilet yet) So, that takes us up to $705.  Plus, month to month is $25 extra.  Which would be $730.  I don’t know what our discount is for signing a year lease, but last time it was $15.  So, it’s $690/month versus $730.  Ugh.  But, I really don’t want to sign another year’s lease here.  I want a house so bad I can taste it.  Which means, Pato has to go to Ohio, so his uncle will open a restaurant here and help us get a house.

All righty, enough lolly gaggin around, I should be working.  LOL  For as long as I can stand it.  I’ll talk to you all later!  Oh, oh, oh!  Make sure you check out Blythe’s By My Store sale going on right now!  If I hadn’t bought most of her stuff already, I’d be snatching it up!   Linking you to her blog so you can get all the details.

Freebie over at SYAO

Posted by Heather On August - 17 - 2007

Goodness I thought I was down and out.  Yesterday I hurt my back somehow and couldn’t hardly move.  Ended up on the kitchen floor for a bit til Pato helped me up and into bed.  Made it through last night and hurt like heck when I got up this morning.  I took 2 ibuprofin and then a couple of hours later took 2 tylenol.  Slept for an hour or so, and I feel better now, but I’m not sure if it’s cuz the stuff finally kicked in or if it’s cuz it feels better for real.  I guess we’ll find out in a couple of hours.

I won’t be on here at all on Monday.  My grandpa’s dear sister, one of the sweetest women in the world, passed away on Wednesday.  I bet he was there to meet her.  :o )  So, her funeral is on Monday, and I am driving myself and my mom and the kids up to Council Bluffs (2 hours from here).  I have to go to this.  Aunt Velda was such a special woman.  Just beautiful.  May she RIP.

Seems kind of crude to go from that to I have a scrap freebie up, but I don’t have a smooth transition from that to this.

Over at Scrap Your Art out I have a beginner’s tutorial on how to export a brush in PSP.  I also have a swirly doodle for you to try doing it yourself (or if you already know how – a doodle for you LOL)

I kind of think it’s cute.  And Blythe!  I think this would make a good Swirly Gig!

Oh oh oh!  Just got the new email from Bunny that I have new products in the store.

Now, if you’ve missed any of my blog freebies, I have them in the store right now.

All of these are in the bargain bin right now for 99 cents!

Pics From The Fair

Posted by Heather On August - 16 - 2007

We went to the Iowa State Fair yesterday and had a blast!  Well, til the very end, when Jordan was standing too close to the dunk booth, and one of the baseballs that thrown very fast, bounced off the net and whacked Jordan upside the head.  :o (  I didn’t see it happen, I was checking on the baby, and next thing I knew, Jordan was on the ground.  He just dropped from the pain.  But, we checked him over, and thought he was going to live – though it would hurt, so we went home after that.

But, we had fun.  I got my annual fudge that I get.  It’s from this place called Suzette homemade candies.  I got Vanilla Carmel Pecan and I think it’s called Penucci Fudge.  They said that one was made out of brown sugar.  It’s yummy!  I swear, that’s the only reason I go to the fair.  LOL

Jordan got to ride some big rides.  For the first time, he was just tall enough.  I don’t know how he did it, but he loves the round and round, make mom want puke kind of rides.  He loved the tilt-a-whirl.  And the one that is like the silly silo at Adventureland.

Now, I wasn’t inside of this one, and it was closed so I couldn’t see it, but from watching the Silly Silo, the whole point is to be plastered against the wall as this ride spins you around and around and around, letting centrifugal force do it’s job, and the floor drops out leaving you hanging on the wall, suspended in the air, supported by nothing but, well… physics.  LOL  Lucky for him, nobody puked.  I’ve seen that happen on the Silly Silo, quite entertaining from above, not quite so, from inside.

He also loved this ride where you lay on stomach, are strapped in, and then go round and round, and up high and down low, like you are flying.  It actually looked kind of fun.

I got to ride the first ride I’ve ridden since, oh maybe I was 18.  I mean, a good big person ride.  Not the merry go round I go on every year to make sure Katiana doesn’t fall off.  (Which she adored for the first year this year – first time she said she wanted to go, got on, and stayed on a horse, rather then screaming when it started and lunging into my arms.  I loved watching her giggle!)  I rode Big Ben.  Here’s a neat pic of it..  Now, it’s not the biggest fastest ride ever built, but for my first time in 14 years?  It’ll do.  It’s a 205 foot shot straight up, really – good thing the guy took my flip flops off – fast.  Then you go up and down kind of slow, just to get that feeling like you are going a little to fast in your car and you go over a wicked bump in your tummy.  Then, you go up to the very top, and they let you sit there.  You get to hang out and watch the grandstands and whatever is happening in there.  I got to watch some of the tractor pull, not my idea of excitement, but ok.  Then, when you are finally comfortable at the top, they drop you down, free falling – woo oo woo oo.  LOL  It was so much stinking fun!

And, I got to meet Rudy Giuliani when we first got there.  Well, not like a sit down have a conversation meet, but a 2 second, hi!  shake hands, move on to the next person meeting.  I don’t know who I’m voting for in the primaries next year, but I was still all excited to meet him.  :o

All righty!  Time for the pictures!

Rudy Giuliani signing autographs.

Alyce enjoying her fan.

Katiana waiting for the Merry Go round to start.  She was so excited!  Wrinkling up her little nose.  LOL

Still waiting for it to go.

And we are off!

And this my friends, is Kitty – the python.  She only weighs 25 lbs.  LOL  I was close enough.

Didn’t get formal introductions on this one, but did find out this one weighs about 40 lbs.

Daddy eventually had her covered in tattoos.  Now, to get them off.

Jordan’s first tattoo of the day.

Pato and Alyce – who hasn’t left yet, BTW, something is wrong with his car and he tried to take to a mechanice yesterday before the fair, but, no one that he went to works on the kind of shocks he has.  So, now it’s back to waiting.

Gotta have a picture with the terrible’s casino man.  LOL  Yep, that’s me.

Jordan in a fire truck.

Listening for his instructions.

The girls.  Me thinks Alyce had enough.  LOL

Yep, she did have enough.  Too bad you can’t see the other side of her arms and her legs.  She had 12 tattoos on all together.  Thanks Pato!

Modeling my new sunglasses at home.  Do I look like a superstar?  LMAO  Self portrait.

So, that was our fun day!

A Little Sad

Posted by Heather On August - 14 - 2007

Pato has been ‘threatening’ to go to Ohio for the last year or so.  His uncle has said that if he goes that he will train him on how to run the restaurant,  and then after 3 months if he is ready, he will open one up here in Des Moines for him, and help us get a house.

Pato just hasn’t been able to bring himself to leave us.  He wants his own restaurant so bad.  That is why he puts up with the crap of working in someone else’s restaurant here.  Because he wants to learn all the aspects of it.

Now, you might ask why don’t I go with him.  Last time I went to Ohio with Pato, he promised we’d be back in 2 weeks.  It was a summer vacation, we didn’t come back, except to pick up my stuff, until I was pregnant with Katiana a year and a half later.  I was miserable the whole time.  Not cuz there is anything wrong with Ohio, it’s a beautiful state.  LOL  But, because of the way his family treated my son and myself.  They would make fun of Jordan because of his hyper activity (he has adhd) and (this was before ritalin) talk about how chubby he was right  in front of him, and not gently.  He was called the destroyer – not in a nice affectionate way either.  The other little kids wouldn’t play with him, and I’m not sure if it’s because he didn’t speak Spanish, or if it was because they were feeding off of the adults attitudes?

Broke my heart.

Then me, I walked in on Pato’s sister one time asking him why, “he loved THAT woman”.  Not in a nice, oh how romantic, tell me why you love her.  She would tell me how fat I was all the time.  (I wore a size 10 – that’s not fat)  And the reason I was so fat was because I ate cheese.  She was always talking me down to other people.  And the rest of the family just kind of looked down their noses at me.  So, while I’m civil, I really try to avoid them at all costs.  I’m lucky his dad is in Mexico.  He got on the phone with me one time while Pato was down there visitng, and told me that he would not LET me be with his son.  I’m not Mexican, I’m not Catholic, there for, I’m not good enough in their eyes.  I mighty happy living 13 hours away from the ones in the states, and much more than that from the ones in Mexico.

So, that is why I won’t go with them.  Because if I go, it’s going to be for more than 3 months.  I can’t just take Jordan out of school, plop him in that school for 3 months, and then bring him back to our school again.  Nope, not gonna do it.

So, it’s going to be a long 3 months.  He says that he is leaving tomorrow night.  He’s going to take the kids to the fair, and then come home and get ready, and then he’s off.  You guys, I just want to cry.  I know this is better for us, because we need that restaurant.  We need a house.  And more importantly, he needs to feel good about himself.  He doesn’t right now where he’s at.  He’s been putting this dream off for years because I won’t go to Ohio again.  I’m tired of living paycheck to paycheck, and telling my kids that no, we can’t get this simple little thing when we go to the store because mommy doesn’t have enough money with her.  His uncles all own many many restaurants, and all of them are wildly successful.  They know how to find the right location, and what to do with it once it’s open.  Pato does need to learn that.  Otherwise, we’ll be one of the many struggling restaurants here in Des Moines.  I’m just scared to see him go.

I don’t know how I’m going to do it by myself with the 3 kids for 3 months.  He’s the only one the older 2 listen to.  Am I going to be completely insane when he gets back?  LOL  You guys will help keep me going right?  Keep me in touch with my sanity?  I’m going to miss him.  Part of me wants him to stay, but part of me knows we need this.

I’m going to miss him if he goes.  :o (

I know some of you women out there have to do this for longer than 3 months, being a wife/girlfriend of one of our servicemen.  My heart goes out to you guys too.  And thank you.

Off topic, Bunny, Pato’s cursing you right now.  ROFL  My cell phone was under the pillow, right next to Alyce’s head.  She woke up when it rang and Kat screamed, MOM!  You’re phone!  MOM!  You’re PHOOOOOOONE!  I didn’t get it in time.  LOL  He’s putting her back to sleep.  I need to find a different place to put my phone at night.   LOL  But, I’m afraid something serious will happen to someone, and I won’t hear my phone ring.

Why Am I awake?

Posted by Heather On August - 13 - 2007

I thought this would be such a nice summer for sleeping in, but I don’t think I’ve slept past 8 once.  (not without getting up in between sometime)  More often than not, I’m up at 6.

Am I complaining?  No, just kind of an observation.  I think I actually enjoy these couple of hours I have to catch up on email, blog, get some work done, before the kids are up screaming through the house and Pato leaves me to go to work.  :o )  Who knew that I, a night owl, would enjoy this time of day?  I’m still a night owl, I don’t get to bed usually until 2.  I don’t have insomnia so much as a bad back that wakes me up in the morning.  I’ve blogged about it before.  Laying in bed kills my back.  So, I get about 4 hours of sleep in before I can’t do it anymore, get up, and within 20 minutes I feel normal.  I guess I’m talking about it because it hurts this morning.  I so need to go to my chiropractor.  I used to go 2-3 times a week, but I haven’t been in a month, because well, let’s say I’m lazy.  I hate getting all 3 kids up and ready to go, and I hate taking all 3 of them anywhere by myself.  None of them listen to me.  It’s not fun, it’s way too stressful, so I avoid it as much as possible.

School starts for Jordan on Aug. 22.  That’s really early for his school district.  I don’t know why they are starting that early, but heck, I don’t care.  I’m ready.  LOL  Wednesday, Pato is taking the older 2 to the Iowa State Fair and I’m taking the baby shopping.  LOL  He had better bring me back some of the fudge I buy every year.  Not that I need it.  The kids are so excited to go though.   Pato can’t wait either, he gets to get his big ol’ jumbo turkey leg.  Only place that I know of you can get them is at the fair, and he’s waited all year for this.  Last year my brother was able to buy a case of them at the end of the fair, so Pato is hoping to do the same this year.  Though, I don’t know where he’s gonna stick them at in our freezer.  He’ll probably have to stick them in my brother’s deep freeze, and go get a few (there are 40 in a a case) when he wants one.

I am going to go get Jordan’s school clothes.  I wonder if the girls will enjoy school clothes shopping when they get older.  Cuz Jordan HATES it.  I’m gonna have to find a pair of jeans that still fits him around and take them with me since he won’t be there to try them on.  I’d rather go clothes shopping without him anyway.  He just complains and moans and groans about all the things he’d rather be doing, til I send him up to sit on the bench in the front of the store (Old Navy).  Typical male.  LOL

I wanted to give you all an update on my neighbor.

From her carepage:

Aug 10, 2007

Sorry I haven’t updated this in two days, but Jan has made some good strides since the last post. I stopped up to see her today and was greeted by big brown eyes! I was taken aback to see her so awake and alert. I asked how she was feeling and got a big roll of her eyes. She shook her head “no” when I asked, “Probably not the best you’re ever felt, huh?”. She moved her right hand today so is now lifting and moving all extremeties. Mom and Steve talked to a good family friend, Butch Weber, today. He’s had similar experiences with his wife and was very helpful–lots of good (positive!) information and suggested good questions to ask. Mary also finally talked to the doctor on the neurosurgery team today; a lot of questions were answered for her. Steve, Jennifer and the girls, and Jennifer’s friend Jordan from Minnesota have been here to visit and were thrilled to see so much encouraging improvement! Thanks for all of your messages. We’ll continue to keep you updated as Jan progresses.

I only have a little information to pass along from Steve, but you’ll all be thrilled to hear that Jan is now off the ventilator and breathing entirely on her own as of today! The ventilator has been being used minimally for the last several days, mainly to give her a little extra rest but she’s now strong enough to do it all on her own. She isn’t able to speak yet as her throat is pretty sore for the ventilator right now. I’ll update this as soon as I hear that she’s talking. In the mean time, keep those good thoughts coming!

This all started on August 3.  So it’s been a scary time of it for those of us who know and love Jan.  Somethings I know that aren’t are on her carepage is that first, her mom and her sister are putting in her notice at our apartment office.  They will pay September’s rent, and then giving the 30 days.  Her lease isn’t up, but with something from her surgeon saying that she is not to live alone – I’m hoping that they won’t give her family any problems.  She is being moved into her mom’s house  When she leaves the hospital.  Also, she works for our apartment office, and the family received a letter with 25 questions the other day pertaining to Jan’s job.  She has a long road ahead of rehabilitation ahead of her the doctor’s say.  And I’m sure the office needs to have someone there to work her position, but she wanted that job so bad.  She fought for it, she went through a month long interview process, and now it looks like it is gone.  I know, I know, at least she is with us still.  But, I hate to see everything she has fought so hard for taken away from her in one day.  I don’t know how long she is going to be in the hospital.  The doctors have said anywhere from 2 weeks – 4.  She’s still in ICU, but her boyfriend said last night that they are moving her to a regular room today since she is off the ventilator.

Thank you for your prayers and thoughts for her!

This is not a new product for me, but Bunny did a Friday flashback, and highlighted some of our designers’ older products.  This is one I had that wasn’t already in the bargain bin.  This is my Lots o’ Space Template set.  It leaves you tons of that white space to use for journaling, elements, leaving it blank, whatever you want.  And it’s on sale now for half price.  ($2.50)

Lots O’ Space Templates

If you snag that with my Heather’s Template Set 1 (99 cents) and Set 2 (99 cents), you would have 12 templates for $4.50.  How about that for an awesome deal!

I don’t know if you guys noticed, but I have drastically lowered the price on my Girly Girl  and So Bright! kits.  They were the first 2 that I put in the store, and I’m thinking about retiring them.  They don’t quite fall into the niche of where I have landed as a designer.  But, while I’m deciding, you can snag one or the other or both for 99 cents each.

Also, my good friend and fellow designer Lynn has got her Designer Grab Bag up in the store now.  My friends, you won’t be disappointed with this.  I got a sneak peak, and it is WONDERFUL!  I’m planning on using everything in it!  You should grab it while she has all of these goodies in it for $8.00.  You will love it!
