My ‘Me’ Day

Posted by Heather On August - 30 - 2007

I knew my mom would change her mind.  LOL  She picked me up and we went out to the casino. Lost $30 but had fun.  The key for me to going to the casino is to take only what I am willing to lose.  I leave the ATM card at home, and I only go every once in awhile.  Seriously, it would be so easy for me to lose way more than I wanted to if I did otherwise.

I think the gambling bug is in my genes.  LOL  My great grandpa made his living playing poker.  I assumed he was good at it if that’s how they lived, but um, when I asked about it, they didn’t live well, so I’m thinking he wasn’t that good.  Never met the man but he’s probably looking down on me saying, what do you mean I wasn’t good at it?  LOL

I was raised with the horse races.  When I was younger, Nebraska (I’m from Iowa, but my grandparent’s lived about 2 miles from the Nebraska/Iowa border) was always changing their law regarding minors and the races.  Sometimes you could be in the track area if you were under 18 but not gamble, and other times you couldn’t be on the premises at all if you were under 18.  So, when I was able to be, my grandma would take me to Aksarben to watch the horses race, and when I wasn’t able to actually go watch, we’d sit around the radio with the newspaper after picking our horses and listen to the races.  I think I was better back then when I just picked the horse’s name that I liked.  LOL  Now, I get the racing form and study the odds and I don’t do nearly as well as I did when I was 8.  LOL  I don’t go there very often either.  But, when the race track here near Des Moines has special events, I will take the kids.  This summer they had ostrich and camel races.  The traffic was crazy getting there, and even though I left with plenty of time to get there, the traffic was at a standstill on the interstate, and the parking lot was a mad house, I ended up missing the ostriches.  I dropped Jordan off at the door where he met my mom and he got to see them while I was circling the parking lot looking for a spot.

They said it was the funniest thing to watch.  Only 1 ostrich kept his rider.

I mean, can you imagine?

Whose idea was it to ride an ostrich?  I mean, I don’t know much about the birds, but I never would have thought, hey, let’s climb on the back of them and see who wins!  LOL

I did get to see the camels race, and that was kind of fun.

But, um ours wasn’t ridden by a robot.  LOL

Don’t ya want to give this guy a kiss?

Ok, I’m done with camels.  LOL

Those races looked like it would have been fun to watch them try and ride a bird lol. Not sure how comfortable a camel would be to race on.

I was suposed to be going to the horse races tomorrow. Its a big deal here, everyone gets all dressed up and everything. But they’ve had to cancel the whole spring racing carnival this year because all the horses have the flu and apparently its really contagious so they’ve all been quarrantined! not happy!
